One of the oldest mods of all of half just so happened to be a "horror" mod. It's still pretty good.

They Hunger is a mod for half-life that was released back in 1999, only 1 year after half-life in 1998, and for the time it had really impressive visuals (which still look good today), and custom voice overs. The mod has 3 episodes to it. This video only includes the first one because even that one took 1 hour.

These zombies are scarier and more effective then regular ones because these ones still have sentience, as seen by the fact they talk, drive, pilot, and use guns and ambushes, the reason they’re trying to kill you is simply because there so unimaginably hungry

Another big factor that makes them scary is the low poly models. They are detailed enough that you know what they are, but simple enough that your brain fills in the gap. And the imagination can be pretty scary.

They Hunger came out before The Walking Dead, 28 Days Later, Dawn of the Dead 2004 etc... and it was very widely distributed among gamers at the time. It's obscure now but it's significant as an important step in bringing zombies back into the popular zeitgeist. In addition to being a very well-produced mod predating Counter-Strike and opening people's eyes to the modding potential of Half-Life

I still love that of all things, the devs gave you an umbrella as a replacement for the crowbar. And what a robust umbrella it is, way more durable than the flimsy plastic and cloth ones I use. This umbrella must be made of Adamantium or something.

Now this was a true scary mod because you don’t don’t hear zombies speak like that. And that is what makes it so terrifying. They just make grainy noises in modern day games but this. It had a more... disturbing vibe.

I think perhaps this mod is so old that the "classic" zombies (Frankenstein, etc) were still what people were imagining when they heard the word zombie. The kind that would rise from their grave and go around eating peoples brains. The modern zombie came about mid-00's up to about 2012, where it was usually based on a pandemic, parasite or virus in some form, usually inspired by rabies, and we got movies like Zombieland and games like Dead Rising and Dead Island. Half Life might have even been among the first to do this with the headcrabs. I kinda miss that trend ngl, but it got really overdone to the point of parody.

I remember completing this whole mod on Sven Coop with a friend like 3-4 years ago. We loved it. I admit being two helps especially with puzzles. And yes, shooting the pilot of an helicopter makes it explode.

Fun Fact: In Sven Co-op there is a map like this but slightly updated. No casual zombies just zombies with headcrabs If you commit suicide in Sven Co-op, three people come up to you, and one says: “Well boys, he committed suicide” Then, you wake up in a room with just a bed, nothing else.

knowing how shit the hl1 engine is to develop in this mod is insanely impressive. The lighting system is based around point lights so it can be very difficult to get convincing lighting in large open areas and keep in mind, these are the issues you'll have modding half-life today. They did this in 1999!

Oh man, this was THE first Half-Life mod I played back when I was 13 on my shitty integrated graphics laptop. It was and continues to be so campy and over the top at times, but still maintaining an atmosphere of dread all throughout. To anyone who wants to play this, there's an HD model pack somewhere on ModDB that updates the weaponry a bit, plus an additional model tweak that makes the zombies fast (though personally the slow zombies fit better). Even if it's dated in a lot of aspects, it's a must play for any Half-Life 1 fan!

A bit late to the party, but at 2:13 the car gets struck by lightning. For some reason the camera has a tendency to linger too far behind the intended frame of view for that cutscene so that's why it looked like the car just exploded. The lightning was just barely out of frame.

800x600 or 1024x768 is such a gem on 160Hz. I can't remember if HL1 has high refresh rate. Even the fact games need no antialiasing at all at 768 when the scaling of the world do not offer like 4k geometry but a minimalistic art choice (for todays standards). To me this is my 2nd favourite mod. The top still goes to Unforeseen Consequences

I remember getting scared by the graveyard area. I just ran out from the church, going through the tunnel where the skull fall out. There I saw myself got block forward and backward by those zombies. They did a very good job at starting the game. For the first few minutes, you see no zombie, but when you starting to see one, you're deeply surrounded.

I played this mod when it came out more than 20 years ago. I found it on a demo disc from one of those PC gaming magazines which were popular back in the day before fast internet was commonplace. It was pretty fun and original mod. Man, time flies!

By the way, you're supposed to keep driving and riding the train until you reach the final train station stop, where the railroad train tracks explode and you have to get off the train engine. You also get to run over all your enemies without directly fighting them head-on.

The scene with the detached zombie head getting run over by the car is not originally supposed or intended to happen at all, it's a very uncommon glitch, which I have personally only experienced once or twice. You might need the Steam Pipe Patch add-ons to fix all the glitches in the Steam version of this mod, which are not present in the Sierra retail WON CD/DVD version.
