Nice, here some other mods I’d consider to be spooky too: Underhell Afraid of monsters Paranoia (this game also had a sequel but I have no idea what it’s called) Nightmare House 2 That’s about it, I’d recommend checking them out and seeing how you feel about em. Paranoia 2: Savior, I heard stories on how the mod ended up being broken because of the war between Russia and Ukraine, they say some modders even ended up missing. It's a shame because the atmosphere is fantastic thanks to dynamic shadows in xash3d! Fortunately on moddb there is an unofficial version that seems more stable and it has english subs, it's not as good as the first Paranoia but it's worth a look!

What about Cry of Fear? It is a similar game made by the same people as Afraid of Monsters, only it uses a better lighting engine and has a well-done disturbing story.

its a shame this mod didnt get a sort of remake or remaster, would love to see something similar to quake's remaster that release not long ago, would be better than straigh visual updates with detailed models and 4k textures in my opnion.

Oohh Cry of Fear, it's filled with too many jumpscares but they're so extreme (like the upside down screamer in the forest) and brutal that I give it a pass!

Black Widow Games actually worked on a Source version of They Hunger, around 2005-2007 i think? They did a bit of work but unfortunately it was cancelled. I saw bits and pieces of those very early builds, and it actually looked rad

4:45 imagine that part on 100 difficulty with 32 players trying to rush the cops. The Sven port has different weapons and some new models for the zombie creatures, and you get the added bonus of people blocking doors for free! Seriously though I just love this mod, it has a great atmosphere and is just the right level of corny horror with Dr. Franklin

I see a lot of comments wanting a They Hunger HD remake using source, like Black Mesa. I think part of They Hunger's charm was the blocky, strangely animated models. Some of them literally stitched together from amateur reskins of NPCs over zombie models. They often appeared stretched and deformed. I may be in the minority but that uncanny strangeness in their forms and features made them seem more disturbing. Partly because my brain filled in the details the primitive models lacked. I am a believer that the best horror is in one's mind. Dusk was an example of a game that used that to its zenith. Like Quake and Quake 2 also on the PC but also the seminal horror of Resident Evil and Silent Hill on the PS1, Blocky models with limited features and leave it to your imagination.

Yeah, I like how blocky and weird they are, although some of them cross into the realm of shittiness when you take a closer look. I love the sheriff model though, it's amazing. Won't mind a remake, but better gun models (them being period accurate too would be a cool bonus, but I never bought the idea that this took place in the 60s, I find the anachronistic weaponry kind of charming) for the original version would be nice.

@@peppermillers8361 That's a good point; the weapons were pretty lack lustre. That would be nice to revamp. I agree, they did jerk me out of the immersion. An umbrella would never be robust enough to act like a crow bar. The initial pistol having a silencer always annoyed me and the sniper rifle is a weird 90s sci-fi calamity that would look more at home in Starship Troopers.

@@tedytarrify I actually like the Umbrella as a weapon, even if it's silly. The pistol has a texture of a nickel plated Beretta 92FS on a Glock, which honestly bothered me more (though I do like the look of a nickel glock with black grips). The MP5 being turned into a G3 is kind of clever but it looks pretty ugly, and the sniper rifle is a G36 (Episode 3 replaced it with a better model). It's all over the place.

I recommend Cry of Fear, maybe you already covered it but fits very well with the Spooktober tematic you are making. Its ameazing how Cry of Fear push the Golden Source engine and (for me) the multiplayer its pretty much terrorific than the singleplayer, there are enemies that practically one-shot you and the resources are very few copared to the single player campaing. Also pretty good video, btw i suggest to take a look at the Sven Coop version of They Hunger because changes a few things that make sense for the ambientation of the mod (for example the headcrabs are just heads of zombies that jump at you). Keep the good work!

some mods I just played recently were the Half-Rats series, its horror-ish and set in the late 1800s so pretty unique for a game. I think they're pretty good despite a few problems, I think you should check them out.

I remember my friend used to get PC Gamer. That's how I found about this mod. I remember it not quite being Half Life level of quality but it was still a lot of fun. And they clearly put a lot of work into making it seem like a new game, instead of just like more Half Life. Clearly it stuck with me. I remembered it and found this video in my searches.

They Hunger is easily one of the most nostalgic horror mods for Half Life. Its up there with the tops like Afraid of Monsters, Cry of Fear, echoes, etc., In my opinion. They Hunger gives me a lot of nostalgia. I have always been a fan of old time horror games and mods mainly for their creativity and use of resources at the time. Once and awhile I would play a horror game with my friends in a discord call and have one hell of a time.

Recently there was a sort of dump of a few They Hunger Lost Souls builds, a canceled source engine sequel to the original trilogy. They contain quite a few complete levels, but all of the story is cut out of them like dialogue or readable notes.

You should also check Underhell, a HL2 mod. And a very ambitious one since it has Resident Evil, Silent Hill and Fear elements to it.

I wouldn't really compare it to Silent Hill because the feeling of dread is kind of none existent, but for the most part it's a good love letter to FEAR. Shame about the lack of enemy variety.

i know this was like one of the earliest big horror hl1 mod . it was nice mod but some areas are bit poorly balanced and sometimes confusing but some areas are much better . Edit : I think chapter 1 is the best because it does not have those iusses.

I feel like this mod didn't age well. It uses old perception of zombies who seem to be more sentient and intelligent than how zombies are seen in games nowadays (less intelligent, more straightforward and often making incomprehensible noises). It also includes Barnacles and Ichtyosaurs for some unrelated reason. Overall, it creates impression of an underdeveloped edgy mod from modern day perspective and you would probably stick with that opinion until you realize how old the mod is.

I don't see how the first part is an issue, I think that honestly adds to the charm of the mod. Having some intelligent zombies is fun, and it's not taken seriously enough for me to bothered by it. I think the Ichy and Barnacles were just standard HL1 mod fair, I don't remember them being used in 2 or 3. But then again, 2 and 3 have much newer assets compared to 1. To be fair, as far as edge goes, this is beyond tame compared to the edgy stuff from the 90s and the 2000s. The fact that it's wacky kind of adds to the fact that it's not very edgy too, especially with how the third one ends.
