Anakin Skywalker and Darth Vader are literally the same person, after getting burned by lava on Mustafar, he forgot his own name and who he was, because that caused his some amnesia of what he did to his Pregnant Wife "Padmé" before she gave birth to Luke and Leia in Revenge of the Sith

Ahsoka cut part of the mask and saw Anakin, her master beneath. Obi Wan cut the mask and underneath it her saw the withering face of his friend, his brother, and apprentice underneath. Luke took the mask off carefully and saw his father. Ahsoka and Obi Wan looked at him with pity for how far he'd fell. This pale and empty man, burned hollow by years of hate and anger. His body more metal than flesh. Luke looked at him with love. His father who was betrayed and made the wrong choice out of anger. A man who could be saved if he saw someone trusting him and refusing to give up on him. Everyone expected Luke to destroy Darth Vader. Because of Luke, Anakin destroyed Vader.

That is the side effects of Anakin drawing upon the dark side a lot for years. It aged him prematurely and horribly disfigured him and changed his eyes yellow and red. He was angry, bitter, hate and rage filled all the time and they were feeding the dark side. His eyes changed back when he let go of the anger, hate and rage and stopped using the dark side.

The bit I liked here is that Obi-Wan and Ahsoka (Jedi raised by the old Order) saw the face underneath, but still thought of him as Vader in the end. They'd moved on from Anakin. Luke meanwhile, only ever thought of him as Anakin after finding out the truth. He formed an attachment, and that attachment was what saved the day in the end. And it's arguably a nice reflection on Yoda that while he did train Luke in the Force, he chose to omit certain elements that he likely realized had been wrong.

Anakin was always pure hearted and good right since he was a child in The Phantom Menace that's y Qui Gon chose him as his apprentice. But after his innocent mom died in Attack of the clones, he was very troubled and disturbed and started questioning which side he should be on already. And in Revenge of the Sith, the twisted evil sith lord Chancellor Palpatine took full advantage of that, as Anakin started getting troubled visions of losing his beloved Padme just like how he lost his mom. And that's literally how the conniving Palpatine saved his own life by manipulating Anakin into believing that he can save the ones Anakin loves so much and avoided straight death by Mace Vindu's light saber and Palpatine was able to defeat and presumably kill vindu too. It was after that that Anakin willingly chose the dark path with Palpatine. So Anakin was not evil but was actually a victim of circumstances and manipulations and connivance by the evil forces. Luke made Anakin his dad realise the error of his ways which suddenly made the so-called Darth Vader do the thing he was supposed to have done thruout his life that is to fight the sith not to join them.

I believe Vader turned much sooner then generally is suspect even. He turned during his and Luke's fight at the cloud city. Watching his son jump to his death rather join him was a watershed moment in his life. Up to that moment all his loved ones were taken from him by others. Here was one who jumped to death rather join him. It rocked him to his core I believe from that moment on Vader began to lose his grip over Anakin. Anakin began to awaken and assert himself more and more. By the time Jedi rolls around Vader is almost gone Anakin knows he must not let this slip. The slightest twitch will alert the Emperor. Which he almost does when he alerts the Emperor that Luke is on Endor and that the force is with him. When he and Luke meet on the moon Vader is gone Luke is talking to Anakin his whole demeanor and voice is different gone is the strident do or die speech. Replaced by a almost plaintive tone of concern for his son. He even says this aloud when he says its to late for me. What is unsaid but intended is but for you my son their is hope! Vader did not know how or the way of it but he knew that his son was the catalyst to the Emperors defeat. To run now would not end the Emperor it would make him worse. They had to confront him together Vader knew he had to play his part. But strike at the right moment in what he knew was going to be a battle. He would not survive but his son would. That was the only part he could see. That is what happened to a T.

This is actually a really good point! I also think towards the end of their duel, where Vader's hand is sliced off, Vader purposely let Luke overpower him and let him cut off his hand to show Luke that while anger can initially boost your strength, it can cause more damage than benefit and Luke realises this after noticing they both have missing hands, and if he'd gone any further he could've done worse.

Anakin Skywalker IS the ENTIRE arc of Star Wars! It starts with his innocence, losing his mother, becoming so powerful not even the Council can contain him, becoming a hero to realising he will lose everything he cares about, taking the only path he saw, butchering the galaxy, becoming buried in his own loss and hatred and finally, being redeemed by his son. Rise, fall, redemption! 1-6 tells it perfectly.

Possibly one of the best scenes in history, period. This scenes feels compared to someone feeling betrayed and lied to, leading to his/her master’s death (e.g. Rapunzel, Mother Gothel from Tangled and Quasimodo, Frollo from the Hunchback of Notre Dame). That’s possibly why Return of the Jedi is my top number one favourite Star Wars movie ever.

This scene made me cry when I saw the movie for the first time. For weeks after it I was emotional about Vader’s death. It’s truly the saddest scene in all of Star Wars. The reason I cried is because I watched the prequels first which makes the story far more emotional as you get to see Anakin.

I don't think many people know this but when Palpatine hits Luke with the dark force, when you see those flashes of light reflect off of Vader's helmet, if you can freeze the frame at the exact moment of the flash, you will see the image of a skull superimposed on Vader's helmet. When I would watch this on my VCR I was able to go frame by frame and that's how I discovered it. Can't seem to pull that trick off on KZbin though. Even after slowing the play rate down.

Palpatine purposely weakened Vader by putting many handicaps on his suit such as weakness to force lighting in order to keep Vader subdued and under his control and to kill or punish Vader if he ever tried to retaliate. The side effects of Anakin drawing upon the dark side a lot for years was that it aged him prematurely and horribly disfigured him, giving him the yellow and red eyes. He was angry, bitter, hate and rage filled all the time and they were feeding the dark side. His eyes changed back when he let go of the anger, hate and rage and stopped using the dark side.

A close runner-up would be the end of ROTS. Especially after Anakin's defeat on Mustafar, where he looses his limbs and gets horribly disfigured, requiring the use of the cyborg suit for the rest of his life. He cuts ties with his former master Obi-Wan. Padme also dies, which is something he deeply feared and is the reason he turned to the dark side in the first place.

This may be a kind of weird opinion, but I personally don't find this moment to be that sad. Like yeah, it's obviously sad. Luke finally gets to meet his genuine father, and his father gets to finally meet his own son essentially for the first time, only to immediately die. Like that's sad, but it's kind of a normal level of sad. I personally think their conversation on the forest moon is more sad. When Luke implores Darth Vader to turn away from the path of evil, the way Vader says, "It is too late for me," has always really hit me. He says it in a very resigned way, as if to say, "I made my choice long ago, and even if I now think it was the wrong choice, I'm going to keep making it because what else can I really do at this point?" It's sort of hits a little bit the way a victim of abuse might blame themselves, and stay with their abuser because it's what they know, and because even though they know their situation is terrible, it would be really hard to try and leave that abusive situation to improve their lives, so they just accept defeat and stay. The other reason I can't help but think it isn't as sad as it could be is I just think of Yoda talking about dying. Death is part of life, and it's part of The Force. At least in the end, Anakin Skywalker dies as Anakin Skywalker, a restored hero, saving someone he comes to loves, and standing up for what is right. His life ends with one final flare of the strength and passion that made him a great Jedi. To slip a little bit into my Tolkienian boots here, surely that is an ending worthy of a song. He can go now to the company of his ancestors (and fellow Jedi) in the afterlife, and he need not be ashamed.

@@saquist What's the best thing about this kind of thing is that we both get to be right. We are enterpreting a work of art, and everyone's personal meaning taken from a work of art is as valid and valuable as everyone elses, unless it were something completely crazy, like if some guy popped in and said this scene meant Luke Skywalker was Hitler, or something crazy. All that really matters is that we enjoy and value the work, and take something from it.

Of all the comments I see in here, consider the love God has for us… A love so great he gave his only begotten Son to die for us so that we, by God’s grace through our faith, could be redeemed from sin and damnation into his glory and eternal life. It’s as easy as believing the gospel.

One of the most beautiful scenes in cinematic history. Luke saved his father. He was the only person in the galaxy (excluding padme) who didn’t neglect or give up on him. When Ashoka cut through the side of Vaders mask, she saw the horror of what her master had been turned into. When Obi Wan cut through the other side of Vaders Mask all he saw was the darkness and anger of the horrifying monster that his former pupil/Brother had become. Luke carefully removes his father’s mask and saw the light that no one else could. He saw the light of a man so hurt and damaged by hate that he made a bad choice out of desperation. He made amends with his fallen father, giving him the love that he needed to return to the light 💡 so that Anakin could die in peace ☮️ a redeemed man. This is made all the more Tragic when you realise that Anakin was only 45 years old when he died. So he had so much more to live for. This truly is the perfect end to the Skywalker saga. This is also by far the best movie in the entire saga, you won’t convince me otherwise. This is just my personal opinion you will probably disagree and that’s fine. To each their own as they say xx

Best part is Jedi is singular and plural. Luke comes back to live/fight again. With him the Jedi order will be restored, with many more to follow. It may have been missed the first time, but the Prequels drive home how Anakin returned to his former self. The title works beautifully on so many levels. And yes, the most significant and emotional is the return of Anakin.
