There are things in MM that never despawn, most of them also keep things on them globally loaded, hence they are usually called "global ground". That chell was sliding on a platform which is global ground, hence it never despawned

That switching level where the shell kept switching things is using something called Global Ground. It used to be super easy in SMM2 as Icicles made global ground, but Nintendo hates good things and changed that. I was so sure they got rid of all major methods of doing so.

i see other people already mentioned this since this video is from a while ago but ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ : (12:04 & 13:55) i think the reason the shell doesn’t despwn is that whatever surface it’s on was coded specifically to stay constantly loaded wherever the player is within the same subworld. in the SMM level building community this type of surface is called “global ground” because it’s loaded _globally._ iirc the trick in this level is that things that are on rails stay constantly loaded. the reason shell wasn’t there before is likely since at the beginning you weren’t close enough to it for it to spawn cause you jumped through the far right part middle platforms.
