The only change it needs, is to have a recessed "bait cup" so that the mice don't wipe off the bait when they slide in. If it's recessed in a cup, the bait stays on indefinitely. Install on a taller 7+ gallon bucket to hold more mice.

Have a bait hook coming from the other side of the bucket with the bait just past the end of the ‘plank’. The bait hook would be made from steel wire with a freely rotating tube around it to stop the mice climbing on it.

The genius of this design is really the magnet I think. It means that there's no feeling of instability and the mouse has confidence to continue moving along the plank. The actual moment of imbalance is so brief that they can't usually react (though I've noticed one or two clinging to the plank for a few seconds before they slide off). It's so clever!

A workaround for killing the mice in water would be having only an inch of water with some cooking oil in the bucket. The water will wet the fur of the mice causing them to be too heavy to jump out. The oil should cause slippage when they try climbing out. They should still be alive [but wet] in the morning. FYI - I'm getting one of the small ones. I want to use it outside. I'm going to cut the hole in the bucket right at the top and put a lid on it. I will put the bait in the center of the bottom side of the lid so they will see and smell the peanut butter but never be able to reach it.

Your barn seems to have a lot of mice running about looking for a feed! Reminds me of the bad mouse plague we endured in South-Western Qeensland Australia this time last year. The roads had mice running all over them. It was absolutely horrible & devastating for farmers! Locals used the bucket system where an old whiskey bottle or glass bottle sat on a chair horizontally, with half the bottle & neck sitting out over bucket. Bucket sits just out from the base of chair. I think some oil was rubbed alomg the neck & peanut butter at the very end of the neck... as mouseys run along bottle, they slip on the oil & fall into tall bucket.

A man was jailed for two years in China after calling President Xi Jinping by a so-called forbidden nickname on social media ‘steamed bun’. The nickname for Xi is derived from a 2013 visit the president paid to a Beijing restaurant chain that serves steamed buns. In February 2017, The New York Times reported a student, Kwon Pyong, who had dubbed Xi as a steamed bun on Twitter, has disappeared.

So far not once mouse has been caught, but there are still mice in the house. I am using other methods as well, including the baking soda method. Other traditional spring traps I have had mixed results, and the electric shock trap hasn't caught one mouse either (I think the hole is much too small and the food tray is not the best (should be larger), I should have bought the electric shock rat trap instead, some of the mice are very large.

Xi-baozi (習包子) is a famous strat started by Taiwanese KZbinrs against stealing videos, where they would file reports of the videos to CCP for those hidden phrases. If any one curious, the word steam-buns are forbidden cuz its considered a mock to the great leader Xi, which literal translates to Xi-the steamed bun He once came to a little restaurant called Qingfeng to eat baozi in 2013, it is very unprecedented as top leader of China. Back then, many people considered this as a signal of the loosening of Internet censorship. However, since he took office the Internet censorship becomes tighter and tighter. So many people call him baozi as satire. Many has been accused for "Inciting subversion of state power" or went missing using the phrase.

Put a small amount of oil at the bottom then they get too slippery to jump out.

That sounds like it'd work even better than the cone idea someone else suggested.

So for those wondering about the random symbols I would tell you what it is and I have in a different comment that is below but KZbin has completely censored and removed it because it is offensive to the government of a very large country that makes stuff.

A layer of used deep-fry oil on the water makes a good scent lure. Just a little, 1/4" floating on top.

You probably could have made that second trap a kill trap anyway since the bucket wasn't clear and we wouldn't be able to see the mice drowning.

"Unfortunately these are an invasive species and I cannot let them go". Brilliant, I may borrow that statement next time someone tries to make me feel bad about killing mice in my greenhouse. AND, it's the truth ! Not so common nowadays.

Translating one of the Chinese phrases is 'steamed buns Xi JInping'. I'm guessing that's an insult to the Chinese president.

While you were catching the wild mice, it looked as if there was a video display on the trap, which lit up with some Chinese characters (which I can't read) every time it caught a mouse.
