Scorcese is such a master storyteller. Here we see Travis say he wishes he could be "organizized". Not "organized". "O-R-G-A-N-I-Z-I-Z-E-D". This cuts deep into the impetus of the character. Note that by the end of the movie, he doesn't get that little sign that says organizized! A tragedy that could rival Sisyphus's.

@@profd65 I don't think it's about what we find attractive - young Robert Deniro here is clearly very handsome. But as a woman myself, watching the scene where he talks to her for the first time rang a lot of alarm bells for me that women are taught to pick up on. For example, saying that he's been watching her, noticing that she's lonely etc. It's a bit odd right? Even if he didn't say those things, it is never safe for a girl to go out with some strange guy she has never met before, however handsome he may be...

I have always found this scene odd, socially awkward and uncomfortable, however I've come to accept it from the point of the narration at the beginning. This was a fantasy invented in his mind. That he never really met Betsy or even took her out on a date. However he always hung outside the place she worked, and when he finally went in and snapped. A sense of rejection, because he never really had the courage to approach her from the beginning. I always feel the last scene with her in the car, was also part of that fantasy and when she got out of the car. He finally learnt to let go of it.
@Cyan_Nightingale
@Cyan_Nightingale 2 жыл бұрын
I don't think it's just his fantasy. There is no signs or cinematographic effect which shows that this is just a hallucination of him. It appears as any other scenes. Scorcese never even confirms that.

@Cyan_Nightingale
@Cyan_Nightingale 2 жыл бұрын
@@partydean17 The last scene is showing that Travis is a "time bomb": he thinks him with guns can solve the society problems. After becoming "accidental hero" by saving Iris from child prostitution ("the accidental" part is unbeknownst to him and by this time he thinks what he did was right), he meets Betsy. The way he glances at the mirror is a sign that he is going to do it again someday. Perhaps to Palantine (his original target & a person who he thinks is the cause of Betsy's behavior toward him). It's not hallucination & can be rationalized. Even Scorcese never confirms if it's just a hallucination. It could be real since New York City in 1970s was so gritty and people with guns are praised to be hero by society (a problem still persist in America until today).
