My longtime hiking shoes have been the Salomon Speedcrosses, currently have a pair of Speedcross 5’s. I’m on my 4th pair of Salomon’s, they have very durable uppers and have never had tear, always wearing them till the lugs on the tread were gone. I’m over 500 miles on my last pair. The Speedcrosses also fit my long, narrow foot shape better than any shoe I’ve tried. And they dry quickly when wet. That said, I’m currently trying a pair of Speedgoat 5’s, and I have about 140 miles on them right now. I’m loving the Speedgoats so far. The “rocker” action is noticeable, and they are comparable to the Speedcrosses in general comfort. I think they exceed the comfort of the Speedcrosses when I start to get over 15 or so miles on the day. If they turn out to be as durable as the Speedcrosses, I’ll have a tough decision coming up.

I have had four ankle surgeries. One was labeled as a foot and ankle reconstruction. I could not hike 1 mile without extreme pain for many years. Then I bought a pair of Hoka Stinsons and everthing changed. I was able to work up to 6 to 10 mile days solely because of the Hokas. I am a believer.

My narrow heels won’t stay in place in Hoka Speedgoats or Altra Olympus. I’m interested to try Altra’s new Experience Wild which have some similar features as the Speedgoats. Lone Peaks have been my go-to shoes and I’ve never fallen in them. But I’m barely over 5’, so maybe short legs make a difference??? I’m currently using some Timp 4s with zero issues.

I'm a huge fan oh Hoka Speedgoats. They are my go to for long hikes and backpacking. I completely agree that less heel to toe drop has taken care of many foot and leg problems I've had in the past. Bigger stack height in the forefoot also changed my life. I went from someone that would get injured on almost every long hike/run and have to take several days off, to being essentially pain free right away. The grip on the Speedgoats is next level too. Just watch out for those Altras. Every pair I've had has broken down VERY quickly.

I hiked the PCT last year with the Hoka anacapa breeze. They were really good and very comfortable for high mileage. That was until I bought the Topo Pursuits. By far the best shoe I have ever used. No holes, tears, or issues with tread prematurely wearing. You can get about 600/700 miles on a single pair. I would say give it a go, if you like zero drop.

Interesting. I recently switched from speedgoats to lonepeaks and I like the lonepeaks alot better. On really rocky terrain, I think the lack of a rock plate and the narrower toe box of the speedgoats tended to make my feet feel more beat up after a high mileage day than the lonepeaks do.
@TaysonWhittaker
@TaysonWhittaker 4 ай бұрын
That is interesting...my lone peaks have a lot of time on them at this point, but I don't remember feeling like they were more protective on rocks...I've loved the lone peaks as an all around shoe though! From daily wear, travel, gym, etc they do well and are my shoe of choice right now for all things besides hiking and running...

This is making me reconsider Hokas. Altras I luv for a week, then my feet are wanting to kill me. I am rocking Brooks on pavement. I tried a pair of Salomons, but the insert in one of the shoes kept bunching up on hikes.

It's wild how little all of the companies put into their inserts...I end up swapping my inserts out on day one... I agree though, my experience with Altra's has me liking them at first and hating them after the milage or time on feet starts to add up...Still not the worst shoes out there though

If you like the Hoka Speedgoat, you'd love the Hoka Mafate Speed. A little more cushion and even better traction. Better for going farther/longer IMO. Mafates are a little more expensive so would probably need that sponsorship to justify it! Lol. Both still excellent choices though!

@@TaysonWhittaker Yeah, i dunno, in my experience the most obvious difference I feel is a little bigger/sturdier/larger lugs in the Mafate but still comfortable. I like to use them for longer, slow runs or hikes. If going for speed I'd go for the Speedgoat. Again, can't go wrong either way!

I went from the Speedgoat 5's to the Altra Timp 5. Wider toe box, more durable, built-in gaiter system, zero drop, extra foam bottom, and same exact outsole. Love the Speedgoats, but I think I found the sweet spot if you love zero drop but the Lone Peaks don't work for you (which they definitely did not). I tried the Topo alternatives that I've heard people love but these were miles better (pun intented).

Everyone has different feet. Mine are lousy. I’ve got arthritis starting in both my big toes. My Altras made it dramatically worse in addition to causing plantar inflammation. I’m very surprised you got that many miles out of Hoka Speedgoats. I’ve had three pairs of SG3’s and 4’s, and the sole rubber has delaminated on all of them in under 200 miles. One pair even got a hole completely through the foam in the heel where it’s not covered by rubber - I could put 2 fingers though from the outsole into the shoe! I weigh 180 lbs and used them for trail running, hiking, and backpacking on dirt and moderately rocky trails. I’ve had Saucony shoes last much much longer, because they’re smart enough to not glue small individual pieces of rubber on as an “outsole”. The SG5’s do look like they *might* have addressed this major flaw by tying the rear rubber piece to the two side pieces in front of it, but whether they will last 200 miles remains to be seen…
