Sanji's explanation to Chopper also explains why Luffy gave it his all. Usopp challenged him to a warrior's duel, and if Luffy went easy on him, or spared him the final blow, that would really hurt Usopp's pride. Usopp made this decision himself.

You have to understand that if Ussop gave up he wouldn't just be giving up on the Merry but himself. Ever since Aokiji showed up he's been saying that he doesn't bring anything to the table and when he argued with Luffy, Ussop equated himself to Merry when Luffy was willing to leave her behind because she couldn't fullfil her purpose he saw it as Luffy being willing to leave him behind because Ussop doesn't see himself as being strong enough to handle the Grand Line.

I like the reading that Ussop here sees himself in Mery. He feels like the crew will see someday that he is, like Mery, obsolete. Theres also the fact that Mery is a gift from his first friend, and how giving up on it might feel like leaving that friend behind like his dad left him

My favorite line about the Usopp/Merry conflict is Zoro’s later on: “We’re not kids playing pirates”. This can’t just be friends goofing around in this case. Luffy is the captain and he made a choice, and Usopp said he’s leaving. That can’t just be water under the bridge so easily. The greatness of this arc has is that the Usopp and Robin stories are both incredibly well done at the same time.

i personally disliked luffy a bit this arc because he made the dumbest choices and was rude to ussopp. Knowing that ussopp is sad about losing the money instead of actually letting ussopp know what happened he basically leaves it up to ussopps imagination and straight up says they are gonna pick a "better" ship. Even during the fight luffy expects Ussopp to be a monster and idiot like himself and run up and just throw hands even though ussopp is just human. Even calling the way he fights a joke

The emotions of each member in this episode of are crazy raw human emotion.... From Luffy: Who feels his authority is being undermined and hurts as feels his losing his home and a family member. Zoro: Whose emotions are hard to read, but wants everyone to respect their leader and his leader to step up and be what he claims he is. Nami: Who feels like she's losing the only other family she's had again. Ussop: Who holds the Merry Go, in high regards cause it was a gift from the girl of his home, it being a member of the crew, and how he feels he's been holding everyone back *which is farther from the truth* WHICH IS WHY HES MY PERSONAL FAV STRAW HAT. Sanji: Who broke their fighting up previous episode, cause he doesn't want them leaving on things said they don't even mean. As well as stopping Chopper from trying to heal him, so you don't hurt his pride by doing so cause Ussop may feel that he's being pitied and resent them. Chopper: Who feels he's losing he's brother as well as crew mate. And how he lets his hypocritical oath and role as a doctor to supersede any petty squabble. And how they all hate they fact that the Merry is Dieing

Man the Usopp and Luffy fight was such a brilliant way to show internal conflict within the Strawhats. When I first watched the show, as much as I enjoyed them getting along, I was like "y'know it would be really nice to see the crew have a massive disagreement over something..." not that I wanted it for added drama/shock value, but as a way to bring them even closer, and help them grow. Arguments happen to the best of friendships/relationships, so I've been yearning for it in One Piece before this (and I'm talking other than Sanji and Zoro's brother-like bickering lol)...and BAM...Oda gave us THIS and MORE. The duel itself was insanely heartbreaking to watch, but it was perfectly executed because my GOSH the emotions are craaazy :(. And just ugh-- the Merry "crying" just had me dripping with snot crying, man. From a viewer's standpoint we just see everyone's love for one another and for the Merry. (Spoiler explanation below) I put "crying" in quotation marks so as not to spoil Jack that the merry *actually* was crying cuz it's technically sentient xD

For me it's what Iceberg said to Luffy, and he start to think like a captain, but of course he usually don't do that so it has been very conflicting for Luffy on what he should do, someone who always prioritise friendship. Luffy character development in this arc is pretty underrated because improve leadership as a captain is not something you see in anime usually.

This was a long time coming for Usopp too. There can only be one captain and he crossed that line many times which was disrespectful to Luffy. You missed the point of this fight COMPLETELY
@darraghtalorgan1905
@darraghtalorgan1905 Жыл бұрын
@@BPrimeProject I'm sorry you feel that way, but I think you're completely wrong. A lot of people don't want to wrestle with the idea of who was actually right and who was wrong because we see them both as friends and want them to just get on; so people pick the middle ground of them both sort of being right and wrong and that it's a perspective thing. It's not about perspective though, and although Usopps position makes sense; he's outwith his rights to attempt to decide massive decisions like that. Usopp, since joining the crew in Syrup Village, was downright disrespectful to Luffy and his position as captain. Think about how their interaction with a marine went just after Luffy's first bounty. Usopp stands side-by-side with Luffy talking to Fullbody and attempting to make it out as if he was the captain. Fullbody asks who the captain is, Luffy responds himself and then Usopp cuts Luffy off telling the marine that he was the one who drew the Jolly Roger; taking credit for Luffy's flag. This is something that Zoro outright highlights to the crew: "A crew with no respect and a captain that doesn't demand it falls apart quickly. I don't care how much you screw around under normal circumstances, but you're still the captain, and you rank above me. If you don't act like a captain at a time like this, I'll be the next one to leave this group!" Usopp was trying to overrule Luffy about the Merry and was overstepping his role as crewmate. Usopp didn't respect Luffy's authority as captain, and Luffy didn't try to be respected for that position up until now, because it was too difficult for him to be that hard on a friend. This was something that Luffy had to learn and go through because of his role as captain. Luffy also comments about this to Zoro after their fight, talking about how it's heavy/difficult, to which Zoro responds; "that's the burden of being a captain. Don't doubt yourself. If you start becoming unsure, who can we have faith in?" They're not just fucking about, they aren't kids just playing pirates as Usopp's been treating it; and been treating Luffy. They have fun but at the end of the day they are pirates, their lives are in danger all the time and they do have to deal with real and difficult situations. Usopps insecurities clouded his vision and he didn't put his trust in Luffy as captain; he didn't trust Luffy's decision. This is the entire reason that Usopp is the one that has to apologise. The duel was the visual/action based representation of this argument. Usopp was outright saying that Luffy didn't deserve his position as captain because of the choices he was making; that's something that Usopp has no right to question. He should've trusted Luffy as his captain and respected his decision; instead he questioned it and broke the crew apart. The Merry was just one part of this thing and a culmination of the behaviour from them since their first meeting. Usopp needed to learn this lesson otherwise Luffy would look to the world more like Captain Foxy than the Strawhat pirates they are now. Usopp was in the wrong, he was disrespectful while demanding unearned respect from others, he didn't trust his captain and was insubordinate to the point of dueling Luffy for the right of captain. This needed to be set right sooner, rather than later, because enemies will use that weak link to destroy the crew; if Usopps disrespect didn't get there by itself. Usopp didn't trust Luffy. Luffy is his captain; Usopp was wrong to not trust Luffy. Usopp didn't treat or respect Luffy as his captain; he was wrong to act that way. Usopp needed to learn that he was wrong and apologise for his behaviour. This is why it was important that Usopp had to apologise; he had to prove that he had changed and that he had that respect and understanding for Luffy's position. If he showed no change, then he no longer deserved a place as one of Luffy's crew. It's a complex issue, but there is a clear path through that's been shown to us.

I've watched this episode for a while now but I just realized that Luffy's battle with Ussop was the only battle I can remember where Luffy would actually say "Ouch" or "That hurts". Meaning Luffy hurts more when he has to fight his friends. And that I think makes him a very very good Captain imo. He always puts his crew before him.

To me it goes back to what Shanks said. When you set out like this, be prepared to put your life on the line. Luffy understands this better than almost anyone. Usopp before this has been in some very serious situations but would still run/consider running away and avoiding a situation. This time Usopp had the largest amount of determination he's show thus far, fully willing to put his life on the line to take back Merry. So when Usopp challenged him to a duel, Luffy recognized all of this and felt no other choice but to fully honor the challenge. No matter how hard it hurt. Luffy's view (especially during that conversation with Nami) seems fairly polarizing, but that's always been how I've seen what he meant. But fuck, it's sad 😢😢

The favorite things for me about this episode and the previous one is how they show the right and left hand men of the future pirate king. Sanji (the left-hand man) kicks Luffy and stops him from saying something he'll regret later. This episode, Zoro (right-hand man) tells him the words "it's your job to burden it as the captain". It's the little things like this that makes me like the characters so much. Also, in the version I've watched, Luffy says "It's heavy" at the end to Zoro and in reply he says the whole "it's your burden as a captain" thing. I feel like that translation was much better than this.

Love the double upload. But maybe space them out to like a half hour or something. I've been getting the second of two recommended a lot of the time without it ever showing me a first. That bit of time might build up views to make that concurrent watch easier for people
