What a wonderful, and timely, video. Looking into OP from a Digimon player perspective, I was intimidated by deck building as you lack the inherit structure of levels. The 12-10-8-6 ratio of digimon was such a guiding force when I started that game that I found myself craving similar scaffolding. This was just so clear and insightful and helped me fill out the skeleton for my first deck. As an aside, it is really encouraging to see a fellow teacher creating TCG content!

WHat I really like about this video, is that you use Meta Lists to explain what changed, and why things can be considered that or that, depending on playstyle. Its the stuff you cant see as a netdecker. AS experience grows one can fidn it out, but I also met some netdeck players ( in other TCGs ), that don't even know WHY their deck is Meta atm.

If you do another video at any point, i think it would be nice for beginners to go over playing on curve - why do we want to (power level per don spent on one card, card advantage/disadvantage if you are only playing 1 vs many cards a turn) and also how that may effect you card ratios in relation to deck building
@joeyrhubarb2558

Maybe out of scope for what you want for this video but: how do you identify cards that are helping you towards your win condition vs win more cards? Any examples you have would also be great
@Vvulfrik
@Vvulfrik Жыл бұрын
That's a very good question, but hard to answer specifically, it will largely depend on what kind of deck you are going for, the colors, and the Leader. The best example I can give is really just posing a question: "Are you happy to see this card in your hand at any point in the game, knowing that when it goes down this match could either A.) Swing in my favor, or B.) Keep me in the driver seat." Then what differentiates it from a card that is more along the lines of "win-more" would be something along the lines of, "Does this card actually help me close out this game? Or was I already doing that before I used it?"

Awesome guide! Building a blue deck right now. I have question what would a character like Blue 4 Pudding be considered? I think atk is to low to be a bruiser but cost is to hight to be utility.
@Vvulfrik
@Vvulfrik 3 ай бұрын
Good question, so some cards are very Hybrid in that way where they can be either/or, like 3c Brook, 3c Zorojuro, and even 5c Shirahoshi. Personally I would still consider all of them Utility with varying degrees of additional or potential upside. It's the same idea with the 1c and 2c searchers, they get the job done On Play, then any more value I can squeeze out of them after that is generating pure advantage.

I would say hop on the Discord to talk it over with some of the people on there (myself included). That might be the 2nd or 3rd most under-represented Leader in the entire game right now. And that's out of the 70+ Leaders that exist lol. I like a good challenge though. One more thing I'll say is that there is a Green/Yellow Yamato from OP06 that is actually very competitive.

I would just group and start every deck with 2ks and event counter (12-16 cards) Then the rest of your deck should just be labeled as the 'engine of the deck'.. i think the best way of making a deck in optcg is to separate them regarding your don curve So what/ how cards are viable to play on your first turn, then your second, etc I think thats why some decks are really strong going first but suck ass going second, vice versa With your deck list example, i think instead of explaining it as utility/ bruiser/ boss , its better to explain it as the 1/2 don play, 3/4 don play, 5/6 don play, 7/8 don play, 9/10 don play

So the online version (called OPTCGSim) is completely free. The average deck in the game costs just under $200 US. But there are some really cheap options under $100 US as well.

As new player that is trying to build black decks without having invested 250$ in Borsalinos and Kuzans, how should i approach my deck building? Is there any alternative other then these navy staples to make decent decks with this colour (exept Rebecca) ?
@Vvulfrik
@Vvulfrik 11 ай бұрын
So I think the Borsalino's are going to be core to Black decks for quite some time. However, in the meantime I think you can just run something like Sabo and 4c Rebecca in the place of Bors and Kuzan. However, it really is hard to replace Borsalino. I've seen quite a few decks run and not worry about Kuzan, but not so much Borsalino.

What is aggro, control and midrange?
@Vvulfrik
@Vvulfrik 8 ай бұрын
So Aggro is short for aggressive and it usually denotes a deck that is meant to be very fast paced and aggressive in the early game, trying to win early on, typically establishing multiple smaller bodies a turn in the mid game to keep on the aggression. Presenting as many threats as possible is the name of the game. Midrange is a deck that tries to play the most efficient bodies it can on a curve. A curve being turn 1, play out a Character that is 1 Don, turn 2, play out a Character that is 3 Don, and then 5 Don, and then 7 Don, and so on. Typically a very balanced deck of early Characters, Mid game Characters, and Late game Characters. Control is a deck that is more interested in being able to answer threats that your Opponent plays and being more defensive, typically building up a wall of Blockers in the Early and Mid game so that it can thrive in the late game. The core of the Deck is built around being able to sustain in the late game from cards/leaders that can generate more value than the other 2 (midrange/aggro).

How many Don cards can be in one deck?
@Vvulfrik
@Vvulfrik 10 күн бұрын
Each player has 10 Don. It is not actually in the main deck, but rather starts outside the game in it's own Resource Deck. The way Don works in this game is, the player who goes first gets 1 Don, then the player who goes second gets 2 Don, and each Player gets 2 Don for the rest of the game each turn until they reach 10. So typically speaking the player going first is on the "Odd" curve of 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 10 and the player going second is on the "Even" curve of 2, 4, 6, 8, 10.

The first thing that I would do as a total beginner would be to: 1. Watch the game tutorial so that you know the mechanics: kzbin.info/www/bejne/qWnWaKmJiMdris0si=H1ALKlTPvgJRhiqw 2a. Familiarize yourself with some of the meta decks out there to help learn about the cards: onepiecetopdecks.com/deck-list/english-op-07-500-years-into-the-future-decks/ 3. Download the free Sim so that you can start to tinker with cards, read them and play with them etc before buying any cards you might not want: kzbin.info/www/bejne/gJvWn6ZqZslgncUsi=mtIUXh9sKTzMmhYz This is a good start to learning the game, don't be afraid to ask any questions. It's tough getting in to a new game because the mechanics might seem foreign and the card database might seem overwhelming, but if you take your time learning it and watching lots of content on it, this is a very easy game to learn and a lot of fun to play and master.

This is a very minor quibble, but as a beginner player who found this video while trying to learn more about deckbuliding, it was kind of confusing and annoying that, while listing example decks, you frequently changed both the order in which you discussed each class of card as well as the specific terms you used. Just as an example, you switched between "bruisers", "blockers", and even bizarrely "beaters" several times. It would have been nice if each deck was presented using the terms you introduced and the start of the video and presented in the same order.
