I'm 59 with stage 3 COPD. I have a 2019 Specialized Turbo Levo Expert and before that a 2015 pedal assist Haibike. The Levo allows me to ride with friends and family plus it is simply a blast to ride. I can ride the vast majority of trails here in NWA, not because the bike can't handle all of them, it is more a lack of skill by the rider at times :). Due to the COPD I have regular FEV1 / FVC breath test, the doctors ask me what I do to maintain lung capacity/keep my COPD at bay and my answer is riding my pedal assist mountain bike!

I totally agree with what you said here Rich. My Giant Trance 1 is broken and waiting for parts so I've been renting bikes so I don't go crazy (crazier). Rented an eBike a couple of times and your assessment is spot on. So much fun, but still a great workout! It enabled me to ride twice as many miles and blast the uphill, still working hard, to get to the downhill. Because of the low extra weight, it bombs the downhill and stays planted for sure. I can definitely see myself getting one of these. I would love to try a lighter version like the Specialized for comparison. Shred on dude!

Hi Rich just getting back to you mate regarding my Giant Reign E+2 and your review. I have had the bike now for 5 days now and you speck with no fork tongue. The suspension on this bike eats my Giant Trance 3 2020, the weight like you said is an advantage. this bike is so much fun, just getting my head around popping wheelies on this thing but the only problem now I'm facing is my son has kicked me off the bike and I have to ride the non assist MTB when we ride together. Great review Rich. You have some excellent trails for ebikes where you live. I already have an EMTB and can really relate to your excitement and enthusiasm. They're the most fun my son and I have had mountain biking and have certainly made fitness differences disappear, ascending enjoyable and allowed more repeats of downhills to help improve our skills. It would be the only MTB I would have in my garage too, if only it was more reliable!
@richdrewtherideseries4 жыл бұрын
Thanks Brian! The trail system here is perfect for ebikes. I love how you use the phrase "made our fitness differences disappear!" I think thats such a great point. Out of curiosity, what sort of reliability issues have you had? I'm still very new to this ebike scene and learning every day.

@@richdrewtherideseries In my case replacement motor (due to excessive bearing play) and battery (wouldn't charge) within the 1st 1000 miles and new handlebar remote (-ve button stopped working) about 1500 miles. Bike is now past 2100 miles without any more problems. All covered by warranty that expires in November but those parts are not cheap to buy. I even bought a cheaper 'analogue' hardtail to ride whilst the bike was in for warranty repairs! Motors/Batteries are not serviceable, unlike other expensive bike parts e.g. forks. Also, failures often come suddenly without warning. Imagine having to replace your expensive wheels because the wheel bearing has failed. That's how motors/batteries have been designed!

Hey great video. I’ve got the Reign e pro 0 and love it. It’s my second ebike. I had a Trek Powerfly 7 plus which I loved as well. It just needed more travel. The Giant Reign is better at hitting all the big stuff and pretty good at everything else. The Powerfly was better as a trail bike because of the shorter travel and steeper head angle but it struggled on the big hits. The Reign is better for me because it is a good trail bike and when the going gets tough it excels. The low bottom bracket does hit the rocks a bit on technical trails but the replaceable bash guard is cheap from Giant. So just replace it when it wares out. The Pro 0 has all the good gear on it and it all functions perfectly. It’s the best value for money out there.
@richdrewtherideseries4 жыл бұрын
Hey Grant! I'd love to get my hands on the 0. I've been on a Devinci DC recently and it's much better suited for these parts. The Reign is gnarly and I feel it's well suited for the big stuff. Hoping to get on a Trek soon and give that Bosch motor a try.
@jomerjsim4 жыл бұрын
Hey Rich, no I haven’t ridden a Devinci. I got my Reign 0 for $10500 Australian $. With the top of the line components it’s the best value for money out there. I’ve ridden the Merida E160 9000. It steered a bit quicker due to the Mullet set up, the Shimano was nice but having more settings in the Giant was better. The bike felt more plush at low speed compared to the Reign but when things get rougher the Reign was better. I’ve ridden the new Trek Rail, it felt very neutral and very good for a 29er. I noticed the better roll over on square edge hits with the 29er wheels. The Bosch motor had more of a growl noise to it. The Rocky mountain motor is quiet but has a lot of chain noise due to the amount of chain wheels. I’ve ridden a lot of Ebikes and for my style of riding I like 27.5 long travel that is good as a trail bike and good on the rough stuff. The Reign ticks all the boxes. If the Yamaha motor was smaller in dimensions like the Shimano I would rate it as the best motor. Look forward to more videos.

Following on from your review of the Specialized Stumpjumper and the Giant Reign E+ 2, you definitely need to get your hands on the new Turbo Levo SL, Specialized's new lightweight EMTB offering and give your opinion. The GEO figures are almost identical to the standard Stumpjumper but does its reduced pedal assist make those technical trails more difficult than a standard EMTB?

Thanks for the excellent review. Ive ordered my Reign e+1 last week, should be at my dealer in the next couple of days. Wasn’t sure if i should have waited on the 2021 series, but meh. Its spring, still a lot of bike season left and i think the red-orange look is rad. Can‘t wait to go pick it up and ride it. opted for the 500wh version, since i figured if i really want more juice i just buy a second battery instead of 625wh+extender. Leaves me at 1000wh instead of 875wh. Im wondering, which drive mode did you usually pedal in, how many miles could you drive? looking forward to your next longer review of the reign. Sub. Even with my bulky frame 6ft 1" 200lbs I can easily get 60+ miles range on the emtb, I can also do 60 miles+ on the road bike, but I'll be absolutely knackered by the end of it.

@richdrewtherideseries4 жыл бұрын
Hey Bo! I haven't had a chance yet, but I'll do my best to put something together soon. Both rad bikes, I think it comes back to 1) where you are riding and 2) what sort of deal you can get. The Reign is definitely the burlier bike between the two.
@bounderwater4 жыл бұрын
Thanks Rich for the reply! I live in BC Canada where local trails can get pretty technical. I don’t ride bike parks (if I do I won’t use an EMTB), I like how plush the Reigh E pro’s setup is and the value is so great, but I am more leaning toward to a DC NX or Norco Sight VLT for local trails (more nimble on techy trails). It’s hard to find a demo day right now, the parking lot test ride is all I got...don’t think I will go wrong with any of those, but look forward to your review on the DC.
@kayakutah4 жыл бұрын
Interesting. I looked at the specs and a few things struck me. 1st, I'll be 68 in August and live in Utah so almost all of my riding is above 7000 feet. I'm on a Trance 29 Pro 1 and love Maestro. Probably by the time I hit 70, I'll have pulled the trigger on an E-bike. It seems a great opportunity to sacrifice easy performance for fun performance. By that, I mean i can run a larger chainring up front, beefier tires, 160mm Vs. 115mm, super stiff (dare I imagine) Fox 38, etc. and still have a usable bike. And pedal bob? Who cares? To that end, I see they're running 160 crank arms and 36 tooth on the medium. I could never do that on my Trance and make it up the mountain! It improves the utility, reduces the chance of pedal strike (did you notice that?) enables the use of really grippy tires and so forth. And obviously, you no longer need a bash guard for the chainring! I am definitely intrigued. I expect battery and motor technology will only improve.
