I've listened to a lot of channels on how to run D&D, but your explanations are the best. This channel is practical. I feel like I can take what you're teaching, and use it.

I always enjoy your insights, Daniel. Thank you for them. I recently started my home-brew campaign. I had the pc’s all arrive to this new land as either passengers or guards on a caravan. They arrive in town and the talk of the town is the missing cobbler’s apprentice. I made a list of 20 rumors about the surrounding area as well and allowed each player to roll on it as they dine and relax at the tavern. I feel this gives them one definite hook as well as some flavor to the land. Now I get to have fun keeping up with the rumors as time passes. When someone rolls a new rumor, the clock will start ticking for that one as well. Cheers! ⚔️🛡

Great thoughts on using different dungeon design approaches for different circumstances. One size does not fit all!

I completely agree about planning a one-shot needs optional scenes that can be cut for time constraints. This is the way.

Nice tips, I always struggle between the transition from one-shot to campaign. I'll try your method. Btw, how do you play towns? Specially the big ones, those are basically a mega dungeon but more geared towards a subterfuge/intrigue playstyle rather than guns blazing.

Cool! Towns… that seems like a video idea! But simply put I tend to go full on theater of the mind in most towns

I would definitely love to see how you handle towns and cities! Different sized settlements would be great

I started with one-shot DM'ing and I still quite enjoy the pacing challenge. I am the only DM in my friend group that can actually get a one-shot done in 4hrs 😄

Every campaign can become a one shot if you try hard enough. I know this because my players always find a way.

Practice run the given adventure a few times, .. have a good rehears flow chart. Have a stander deck of playing cards on hand, helps to break tension if you have a break in your story telling direction. Drawn heart cards gives bonus hp, spades a single round attack bonus, diamonds give social or skill bonuses. Keep things short and fast to maintain action. I got skilled with 3.5e on running 1st to 3rd level adventures revolved around just chasing down over size insects and frogs for dinner and spell components for multiclass wizard3/rogue3 PCs. 2.) Me starting one of my Fast brutal Horror slaughter games, .. New player to the shop, " What we draw three index cards of 4th-level multi class PCs with 100 bonus hp and +20 temporary points to all ability score stats ? That is not the way you play D&D !" Old player, " That is Palermo's game where you roll down a twenty foot stair case cover in a few dozen of rats and fighting a small squid from Call of Cthulhu in the dark. You surfer 1d6 temporary wisdom/sanity points of mental damage. Along with his reflex/fort saves vs one hit kill attacks dramatic horror movie deaths. " New player, " I'm in, let me draw the three cards. !" 3.) Have players just draw PC cards and drop them into the start of the dungeon with no backstory other than they grew up together, strait into the action Star Wars style. Dungeon is 20ft wide and 6oft long two stories, the catch is they are carpenters and city militia members that are check their old lady baby sister basement for structural damage and found her lost dog. After killing a few giant rats & insects they get cookies for their efforts. She is the neighborhood's schoolteacher/ babysitter.

I started a "West Marches" campaign last sunday. I just dont understand the need to force the PCs back to town at the end of every session. Some groups or sub-groups will form, maybe even become something like a party, I dont see a problem with that. Different parties could start antagonizing and that would be awesome.
@BanditsKeep2 жыл бұрын
Typically this is just done to keep things like calendars etc - if a group ends in a dungeon for instance you can easily freeze time for them, but what happens when another group.goes to the dungeon and the timelines cross? It can get messy, but if you are super organized it’s certainly possible!
@Dinofaustivoro2 жыл бұрын
@@BanditsKeep Yes, they could end up going to the same dungeon at the same time. In that case I think I would tell them that if they get too close we would need to stop and join the other group next session. The very first session one of the PCs even left a "Help Wanted" poster in the Town Hall for the next group of players. So merges are expected. Thanks for answering, I enjoy your chanel a lot
