I work in Kpop and it’s common for the big labels to have 500+ songs to choose from for their artists’ singles

Over 800 songs? Wow! Now that's perfectionism. No wonder Thriller was that good. Only thee best made it through. 😅

I feel like that's exaggerated. 800 songs is absurd, there's no way they didn't use some of those for later records. A lot of artists make 800 songs throughout their entire career.

@@wayback1010 its a shitty story for a fans. First i hear in interview it was about 100 songs, later after few years it was about 300 songs. Now we have 800 songsshittystorytotell :D

It wasn't necessarily MJ writing all of those songs from scratch. For the pop genre and for artists who are more "performers" than "songwriters", there's a lot of song selection and collaborating with writing partners from song sketches going on. With that in mind, it could be not too far from the truth, even if it's not an exact number. Hope that makes sense. -Justin

@@wayback1010 that's what happens when you have a big budget like MJ. Everyone is more than willing to drop in their works for you to potentially work with. He was not an independent artist. Big difference.

@SonicScoop exactly. MJ had a strong team who brought him the necessary material to work with. All he had to do was pick and choose really. Such a privilege... You really can't go wrong

If thriller had 800 song options, why did they pick so many of the same songwriters... Maybe they had 10 to 20 songwriters, musicians that had lots of songs in their repertoire, finished an unfinished, parts, fragments, melodic ideas...

Yeah, I serious doubt they had 800 fully finished songs, but bits, fragments, ideas, etc... of them like you're saying. Thriller was one of those ones that hit different that they knew had more potential.

@@SonicScoop I'm not sure. I'd like to but in the early stages of the current project and I don't think I'll be far enough along with anything by then. Either way if I have no track for it I'll still come along and listen
