I was at the polling place all day working, so I didn't get to see this until late at night. Being an election inspector on Long Island, it was a long day, but it was honestly a fulfilling and educational experience. It was left out about FDR that a railcar called the Marco Polo was fitted to assist Roosevelt with his limited mobility. It was used by FDR as governor of New York and during his tenure as President. It was later replaced by the heavily armored Ferdinand Magellan, which was also used by Truman. FDR also frequently stopped at a secret station in NYC under the Waldorf Astoria, though contrary to popular belief, the station wasn't built at his request. The platform was not originally intended to be used as a station. It was built during the construction of Grand Central Terminal in the 1910s, and served the terminal's power station and heating plant. The platforms at tracks 61/63 and 53/54 were originally used to carry ashes away. The power plant was demolished in 1930 to make way for the hotel. There was a baggage car there that made many people believe it was FDR's personal train car that transported his limousine, which is a myth. Grand Central used the Baggage Car 002 to transport the rigging for a hundred-ton capacity electric double-ended crane in Grand Central’s tunnels before being left on Track 61. When you visit the WTC Transportation Complex, there is something kept intact from the attack at the WTC terminus of the E train. As you use the passageway to get to the Oculus from the E, there's a set of doors you pull open. One of these doors is spray-painted with "X MATF 1 / 9 13". "X MATF 1 / 9 13", spray-painted by the Beverly, MA-based Urban Search and Rescue Massachusetts Task Force 1 who were on the site on September 13, 2001 (hence, 9 13). The X was in a box, and X was marked if an area was dangerous. As a condition for getting funding for the Oculus, under Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966, PATH had to preserve the pre-9/11 passageway's original design (the last surviving piece of the 1970s WTC station concourse). This passageway reopened in December 2016, but this door was kept with the spray-paint, and a glass case was put on both sides of it with a plaque talking about the door's significance. Grant unfortunately didn't attend the Golden Spike ceremony. Grant wasn't there because simply he had just been sworn in as president and Civil War reconstruction was still underway. The guy with the beard shown at the ceremony in the middle at 3:37 is California Governor Leland Stanford, who was the one to drive the spike. Though Grant still very much played a role in the Golden Spike happening. But Grant DID attend a different golden spike ceremony. The golden spike for the completion of the Northern Pacific Railway in Montana in 1883. The final "golden spike" driven was not actually made of gold, but was the same spike that was driven to begin the construction of the Northern Pacific in Carlton, Minnesota, thirteen years earlier. The spike was driven by Henry Villard, Grant, and Henry C. Davis, who had helped drive the first spike. You can visit the site today off Interstate 90 in Independence Creek, Montana. During Coolidge's three months in South Dakota, he made visits to Native American reservations, mines, farmer's picnics, fairs, church socials, rodeos, did a lot of fishing, presided over the official dedication of Mount Rushmore, and announced he wouldn’t be running for president in 2028. He understood their need for infrastructure while bouncing over the ungraded roads, and so he wanted to stimulate the region’s economy by publicizing their attractions. Stuff I mentioned about the Hoover Nature Trail and his hometown that wasn't mentioned here, the former railroad that's now the Hoover Nature Trail is where Hoover developed an early interest in geology while collecting interesting rocks along the railroad grade, looking for fossil corals and agates. The since destroyed West Branch depot was the scene of orphaned eleven-year-old Hoover's departure for a new and uncertain life in Oregon in 1885, and where Hoover made his triumphant return as the newly nominated Republican candidate for president in 1928. And stuff I mentioned that was cut out about Carter, Plains’s 1888 railroad depot is the oldest building in Plains, and during Carter’s campaign, it became the campaign’s center. Approximately 10,000 people a day flocked to Plains to learn about Carter. It was at the Plains Depot that many state primary victories and, ultimately, the historic presidential victory were celebrated

You actually missed what I think are some way more interesting facts about Garfield related to railroads. When treatment did not appear to be working, he was transported by train to Elberon, New Jersey, home of the present day New Jersey Transit station. To get him to the house by the sea, where it was hoped, he would recuperate in the sea air, locals built a temporary railroad, I believe in an afternoon, but in any case very quickly, to get him there. As I understand it, there is a building in town that is built out of the railroad ties. I have not visited myself, but traveled through the station many times.

Jimmy Carter signed the Staggers Act in 1980 deregulating the over-regulated railroads to begin with making them competitive again. The railroad doldrums of the 60s-70s can be blamed by outdated government regulation and burdens put on the railroads because of it. It is one of the many reasons Penn Central was a failure.

Why don't you talk about the Reagan whistle stop campaign of 84 instead of cutting funding? Or how he did ads for Union Pacific's passenger trains, he supported and made an appearance for UP, WP, and MP's merger in '82, he collected model trains, he passed legislation creating the California state railroad museum, multiple presidents and congress hasn't been a fan of Amtrak's overly large funding. Reagan's administration believed that the private sector should take over passenger railroading and freight among other things. Sometime's presidents do things we don't all agree with but come on, THATs the fact you chose to include?

I don't know where you got these facts, but Grant was NOT at Promontory Summit. The largest political figure present was Leland Stanford, governor of California, founder of Stanford University, and executive of the Central Pacific. Hoover had other connections. He was involved in the refugee assistance to Europe after WWII, which included the Friendship Train. Interestingly, Nixon set Amtrak up to fail. It was deliberately under-funded, and given a profitability mandate that was known to be impossible. The basic idea was that it would be a Euthanasia program that would absolve the private companies of blame for ending passenger service. Reagan's plan to destroy Amtrak even went so far as to shut down the NEC. Yes, really. Of course, this probably wasn't really REAGAN's idea so much as it came from his staff, which were almost infinitely corrupt.
