My favorite thing about Carter as a president was that because he was a naval nuclear engineer, when the Three Mile Island meltdown happened he was able to go there and know what the NRC and TMI folks were talking about, I also feel that what Carter accomplished after leaving office was much more important that what he accomplished in office.

Coolidge's story is actually really sad, and, like with Pierce, it explains a lot about the man. He lost his mother and sister young; his father was something of a tyrant whom he disliked early in life. When he was vice president, he received word that President Harding had passed, and his father administered his oath of office. He lost his 16 year old son, Calvin jr, to sepsis during his first summer as president, just after winning the nomination for 1924. He won, and he fulfilled his duty, but he had no desire to be President after he lost his son. He wrote "the power and glory of the presidency went with him [his son]." Basically, he, like Pierce, spent his elected term in a deep depression and didn't do a lot; he left the nation to his secretaries and withdrew from society.

In both cases I wonder if in the modern time, they may well been highly encouraged to resign from office. I don't really think that many people in the modern time would have a negative feeling about their resignation given the circumstances and probably would have been respected for it.

While I agree, I also do understand that not everyone is able to contribute to the videos they are watching by providing insightful commentary if it is a topic that they are unfamiliar with. For example one reaction channel I watch is more of a learner type reactor who watches videos about history among other topics to gain a better understanding of the things that the video covers. I suppose it depends on the type of video being reacted to. You're more likely going to come across a more sophisticated reaction if the original video is well-made and thought provoking rather than some run-of-the-mill top 10 list.

Blamed for the Great Depression, I read a letter from him as President to FDR (Governor of New York), asking FDR to do something about the wild and crazy Stock Market...which FDR had more control over as far as I can tell.

I forget the year (would have been early 2000's), but we were in Kennebunkport and were leaving a restaurant after dinner and he and Barbara were in the parking lot (along with I assume were some Secret Service agents). Fun fact: Dwight Eisenhower once got into a fight with a tree on a golf course. On the 17th hole of the Augusta National Golf Club stood a loblolly pine which interfered with a number of golf games, including those of the avid golf player Eisenhower. He was so irritated by this tree that he petitioned for its removal. This was denied, and the tree stood until 2014 when an ice storm killed it and created a safety hazard for all around.

Re: The Calvin Coolidge story about the woman betting she could get three words from him. This was a joke in one of the Oz books. At some point in one of the later books, Dorothy is told that all animals in Oz can talk, even immigrants. She asks Toto if he can talk, and bets she can make him say three words. He says only 'You lose'. L Frank Baum died in 1920, so this joke predates the Coolidge joke by a few years. And I'm wondering if that's where it came from.

Some interesting tidbits on Calvin Coolidge. For many years he was actively involved in Massachusetts politics starting as a city counselor in Northampton Ma and ending with his tenure as the Governor. Northampton is the home to his presidential library which is a couple of rooms on the 2nd floor of the Forbes Library. Very unassuming in comparison to the more resent libraries which is much like Coolidge himself. After Coolidge died, the state of Massachusetts decided to dedicate a bridge that spans the CT river between Northampton and Hadley in his memory. None of the Coolidge family felt that the dedication ceremony was worth their time to attend as they all had excuses for not showing up. While there are numerous buildings and public works named in his honor during his lifetime, the bridge has ended up being the only public memorial to him in existence.

I have two: Calvin Coolidge is a direct descendant of Edward Doty, one of the signatories of the Mayflower Compact, who happens to also be a direct ancestor of mine. Coolidge would be my 11th cousin 10 times removed (so basically not actually related). FDR was related to Alexander Hamilton through the Schuyler family. I'm very distantly related to the Schuyler family through the VanSchaick family.

I'm a docent at the James K. Polk Home in Columbia, TN. If you haven't been, I strongly encourage it! There is alot to learn about this President. He interestingly holds the record for least days taken off as President. We see have seen many Presidents over the years that go on vacation way too much, but Polk only took 27 days off in his 4 year term.

Also, Taft is the only president to serve in all three branches of government. 19:34 I also love the story of how he announced he wouldn’t run in 1928. He organized a press briefing. When he walked out to the briefing, he gave a note to a reporter in the front row and left. When the reporter read the note aloud, it said “I will not seek reelection in 1928.” 24:32 As a proud brony, this makes me REALLY happy. When he answered the trivia questions made sense. MLP:FiM began on October 10, 2010, and the brony fandom basically started in 2011. In 2012, the fandom got onto the news because so many people were amazed that a show aimed at 3 to 7-year-old girls gained the attention of full grown men. It was such a big deal that there’s even a documentary about the fandom.

Carter wasn't on a nuclear submarine. He was on a diesel-powered submarine, the SSK-1/Barracuda III. He was training to become an engineering officer on the USS Seawolf, one of the first nuclear subs, but resigned from the Navy when his father died.

I know nothing of US presidents, at all(other than GW was the first) and when James Polk came up with the Oregon-game symbol, all I could think of is this comedic musical called "Trail to Oregon" inspired by that game, and specifically a line that the mother sings in it: "My first pioneer would be President Polk, I think he'd be a good leader of the wagon". Also a fun fact I remember hearing, Ronald Reagan had actually came to the city I live in (Fort Wayne, Indiana specifically)on two separate occasions, about 30 or so years apart. The first time was as a General Electric representative in the old GE plant in Downtown Fort Wayne and in the Fort Wayne Coliseum after the 1982 Flood.

Some of my ancestors came over on the Mayflower as well, and though we're not sure exactly how; we're related to John and John Quincy Adams. One of my old co-workers is related to Samuel Adams (related to the Johns' mentioned previously) and her ancestors also came over on the Mayflower. It's interesting knowing that I may also be related to even more presidents as well as how many others are too.

@@billtalker3843 How are you suggesting the party switch is a myth? It happened around the time of FDR's election, Dixiecrats in the South switched to being Republicans. Progressive/Liberal Republicans who were pro-civil rights migrated to FDR's New Deal Democratic Party. There was clearly a switching of principles when it came to the respective party's ideas on race. Democrats used to be the KKK, pro-slavery southern vote who turned into the party of civil rights. Republicans USED to be the abolitionist, progressive party and turned into the Confederate apologist, anti-Civil Rights, conservative party it is today.

Political agendas change over time, but one thing stays the same: the Democrats are the party of racism, segregation, and slavery. That will never change. Look at who is in office right now. A rich old white man who has ties to the KKK. You can’t make this stuff up. Similar to how evangelical Christian denominations have always leaned against slavery and segregation (to various degrees) while the high churches always leaned towards slavery and segregation (to various degrees). The high churches have always been on the immoral side of American history, and still are, as most support progressive debauchery today. There’s countless “common sense” examples. Open your blinds, look outside, and see the truth.

And I'm not sure how you can criticise Biden for having ties to the KKK, when there is no proof, but in Trumps 4 year term, he never identified the KKK as a terrorist organisation, and there is evidence he is connected to both the KKK and the proud boys. The party switch has been proven to be true and for you to keep denting such facts is pathetic and stupid. Churches and religious charities are known to exclude racial minorities, why do you think they had to start their own churches? Also, if the democrats enforced slavery and Jim Crow, why was it also a democrat who liberated black people from Jim Crow? Your logic is laughable.

Interesting that you bring up Thomas Blossom as I am related to Stephen Hopkins, who was also on the Mayflower, and George W. Bush is related to Stephen Hopkins through my same line, making GWB and Stephen Hopkins distant cousins of mine. I can’t remember exact relations off the top of my head and it’s been some time since I’ve gone through my genealogical stuff, but it’s an interesting tidbit nonetheless. I think it was Taft that was military governor of the Phillipines before he was president. McKinley was involved in the Spanish American War as well.
