One Winter Storm Nearly Wiped Out my Entire Forest

Күн бұрын

It's a sad day for me here at my red pine forest. After years of looking after the forest and taking steps to manage the trees in a sustainable way, one big winter storm changed everything. As I take a tour around the forest on todays video, things are not as I had hoped. There are a lot more trees snapped off or about to snap off due to the intense snow storm that rolled through my area than I previously thought. With the trees heavily damaged, it will be difficult to find the good in this storm.

Oh wow I can’t believe how many more trees you have now lost!! 😮. We too had that dumping of snow but were lucky to only lose a couple on our 25 acres. I know that sinking feeling with all the work ahead and the frustration too of not being able to do much with all the snow right now. I had hoped this year to do some thinning myself early this winter but now waaayyy too much snow. As you noted it could be worse (like tornado damage) and on the bright side hopefully some can be harvested. Time to focus on the mill shed roof and the rest will wait. Be safe out there Sandy. Cheers.

good morning Sandy like I said before i read some of the comments before making mine and one gentleman said something like i was thinking open the trails cut the ones that are arch so the tension is of and they won't fall on you so for now it is cut ,cut ,and cut some more put little flags { orange ruband marker } to show you where the trees are even if they get snow cover, but like he said if you cut the bent ones soon the tension wont be bad, then come back and cut them to logs length then finish your saw mill shed after all this, don't try to cut every thing to lumber but make them into cants and stack and sticker them ready to do lumber that will give time to do more and help to keep the bugs of the wood you can always do a lots of 4x4 8 - 12 - 16 feet long you can always take some of those 4x4 put 4 or 5 on the mill and make a bunch of 2x4 out of them when needed for all the extra lumber it can be stack outside and put some kind of cover over the stack i know it is not going to be easy but a little every day at the end of the week you will turn around and realized you did more then you though well good luck with all of it don't get discourage have a great day

We have been down this road 3 times with hurricane damage. Dont, be overwhelmed by what you see. Once the snow is gone, make a plan and get at it. Like you said take the good logs first and then come back for clean up. I chipped our tops and branches and blow the chips on our woods roads. Good luck.

Sorry to see your pines flattened like that mother nature can be cruel The first thinning in red pine is so important to get done it helps them get big and strong we loose the odd one from time to time but not many and that kind of snow is normally what we get ours is marked for the 3rd thinning now probably do it next fall good luck with the clean up

For sure. Since I took over the land I started working away at the first thinning but unfortunately I've been behind as I think the thinning likely should have taken place before I was around. I figured this year I"d get completely done the first thinning but the cleanup now is going to throw a wrench in the plans.

Sandy... I think your first priority is getting your trails opened. Next should be to get those trees on the ground. I don't think you will have too much residual stress in the arched trees if you don't let them sit too long in that condition. Don't worry about "logging," just get them into a safe condition. After they are all safely on the ground, cut and sort the logs alongside the trails for future pickup. With everything frozen for the next couple of months, nothing should spoil. I know it seems overwhelming at this point (been through something like this myself) but just remember how to eat an elephant. Don't get ahead of yourself. The new sawmill shed can wait a bit... You were going to need to cut a lot of lumber anyway. Nature just selected the trees for you.

We get snow here in Nanaimo Sandy, but usuall when we do it is really wet snow. It breaks up the alders like crazy also even the firs and spruce. The only trees that seem to be immune to the heavy wet stuff are the cedars. As soon as as the heavy stuff falls on cedar limbs, they seem to mostly have the ability to bend and shed it fairly quickly without building up. Sorry to see that scene at your place Sandy.

Dang....that stinks. That's kind of how I felt when every ash tree got taken out by the ash borer....they were just about ready to harvest too. One tip for cleanup.....when I'm working in one area, I scout out the area first, and add pink trail marking tape on each tree that is suspect or known to be a hazard. That way when I'm working there I i can tell at a glance what to be aware of when I've got the chainsaw running (and cant hear anything) takes a few minutes, but can save your life! This might slow up your shed build, but it will provide more lumber!

Hard break. There is always a silver lining. They needed thinning just cut down the ones that are damaged to bad to continue to grow. Mill the bigger ones the small stuff is fertilizer. Sandy!! Love your videos and the work you do, all alone… my cup of tea, or sludge in your case. Anywho, I keep wanting to mention that you really should cut off those long threads on the bottom of your steering wheel knob. You’re bound to get snagged or worse!! Keep up the great content and stay safe! Sorry about the trees but Mother Nature is a b….sometimes.

What a mess, the plan to thin out the forest really changed. Now looking back should you have had a Comercial logger thin out, never know, now you'll have big open spots, good luck with this clean up.

Will a pine tree that was growing straight up and then bent over, hold tension like a tree that was growing at an angle it's entire life?? You definitely have a lot of trees to deal with just to make it safe for yourself!!

Hi Tim. I’m not too sure what effects will be from the tree leaned over but id imagine it won’t be as good as if it didn’t bend like that. I’ll likely use the logs for firewood or less structural lumber

@@sawingwithsandy I can only speak from experience with southern pines, but trees that bent during ice storms straightened up after the ice melted and a little time passed. Some were bent too far and couldn’t straighten, but many did. We’ve seen the same thing after hurricanes left some trees bent over. If they weren’t bent too far, they straightened up. Your trees may be older than the stands where we saw this happen. It’s harder for the older trees to straighten up. I would start cleaning up the broken and severely bent trees first and see what happens with the rest. Good luck and be careful. Bent trees can surprise you when they are cut.

Sorry, but you're pointing at trees further away that just don't show on your camera lol. Gaps might be detrimental when it comes to wind, but increased space and sun allow for future growth.

Sandy, I love watching your videos. Been a subscriber for several years, and didn’t want to say anything negative because I love the content that you do. However, I have been hoping for a while that you would stop using the Insta 360 camera. It is making it really hard to keep coming back and watch. The video quality is just horrible! It is almost nauseating sometimes. End of my mini rant. Thanks again for great content.

It’s a bummer but you couldn’t do much about it before the snow and now you just have to deal with the aftermath. You have a lot of forest and it’s a pretty lofty goal to keep it all pristine and tightly managed, being a workforce of one man. All I’d say is plan your work and work your plan. It’s a shame that so many of the victims are younger and smaller trees so the effort-to-yield ratio will be pretty low for stockpiling lumber. I’d come help you if I could. Do your best and don’t beat yourself up for what you don’t get done. Good luck, Mr Forest Manager! 🥸👍👀👋✅
