If every person in your city opened every faucet in every house, how long would you expect the water to run? Forever? Mother nature has a perfect record. She is undefeated in natural disasters. Man can only do his best trying to minimize it. Even if they didn't run out of water or money or whatever, this was a hurricane of fire.

Not sure if this has been mentioned but people in the NC mountains who's houses were high up lost them to flooding not because the water rose up and washed them away, but because all the rain washed away the mountain they were on, either carrying their houses down the mountain or burying them in the landslide from above. I guess the lesson is being high up does not completely protect you from floods. However, being higher than lower has always been my mantra as well. Great video. Love the plowing. And the firestarter. It really is a remarkable product.

Hi Mike, you are absolutely correct about the term First Responder. I spent nearly 40 years in the fire department in Northern California in the Sacramento area. I responded all over the state on wildfires during my career as a firefighter and later as Command Officer. I have never liked the term First Responder attached to Fire, Law, or EMS. We are not the first responders. The citizens in the immediate area are the first responders. We are the trained professionals whose mission is to take what the first responders have started and expand it into a coordinated, comprehensive and competent mitigation plan and execute it. We are the Fire Department, not some generic term that lumps who know who into a vague category. This is part of what is broken about our society. We have trained the citizenry to believe that initial action is not their responsibility and someone will do it. If more people took initial action, a lot of crisis would be significantly reduced in scale or eliminated completely. Thanks for highlighting that in your video today.

Good Thursday morning Mike and Mellisa! The house I currently live in has a steep hill as well. My first snow storm plowing snow with it, I slid down and wedged up near a tree. Had to call a tow truck in to minimize damage to my truck. I’ve since took out the trees that line my driveway. Thank goodness I haven’t slid down like that since. Have a fantastic weekend!

9:02 absolutely agree with “your” being the first responders. I live in Southern California, we had a huge fire called the Cedar Fire. Ultimately 280,278 acres were burned and 2820 buildings destroyed. I was under orders to evacuate. I took all my important stuff along with pets to a safe area. I had my jeep in the drive way I started watering rooftop as the raging fire approached I got down off the roof and went to the fence line and fought the fire back. It was absolutely surreal how fast the fire travels. In the aftermath I was talking to a police and mentioned I refused to evacuate, he said he would arrest because in his mind I was committing suicide, which is illegal. From my perspective the governments responsibility is to knock on my door and personally advise me of the situation and that’s it! They’re under zero obligation to come back for me. If I choose to die on that hill it’s my right! Side note: those nice vinyl windows you have, they will melt and fallout exposing the inside of the home. Those small vents under the eves, they will allow embers to enter your attic, you need to block them closed. I keep stuff just to to this.

Trees are well spaced within 30 feet of the house and limbed up around 12' beyond that we try to minimize ground fuel and trees are limbed up to eliminate ladder fuel. We are fortunate to live less than 3 miles from the the "Tatanka Hotshots". one of 109 20 man woodland fire fighting crews

Good morning. There was a wildfire several years ago that almost took out Gatlinburg, TN. All told, over 1,400 structures and 14 lives were lost due to the fires. The primary cause was a front coming through with 80 mph winds combined with excessively dry conditions during the fall. It started with some teens playing with fire in the national park and was greatly aggravated when the winds blew sparks from the burning area towards town and then took down power lines and trees (blocking escape routes). The point is that the same thing can happen in the East when properties are not managed properly, cleaning out brush and having plans in place. Another lesson learned in Gatlinburg was understanding the need for coordinated communications and efforts between second responders (to your point). It might be interesting to research any efforts that are in place near your property in WV.

I used to say the same thing as you about where I live, not prone to natural disasters. That was until we had two "once in a century" wind storms in three years. Trees down everywhere, extream property damage everywhere , people have been cleaning up a repairing for two years and still not done. There are so many trees down that a careless smoker could start a fire that would destroy the whole province.

Kids and blankets, so cute!! From North Idaho, 5 years ago when we were looking for new a new house (or property) to move to, we knew for sure we did not want to live on a hill. Growing up here and experiencing the snowy winters we did not want to have to plow snow and deal with ice on a hill. We did look at a lot of property on hills and immediately ruled them out. Our daughter-in=law's parents live about 15 minutes north of us and built their house on a hill for the view. They have to deal with the snow and ice, it's always sketchy when we go up there, no thanks. We did buy 4 acres of flat land, it's very easy to maintain and drive in the snow. We're not in a flood zone, no earthquakes, no tornadoes, no hurricanes, if Yellowstone ever erupts or Mt. Rainier ever erupts we may be in trouble. Talking about the CA wildfires, that's why we have cleared around our property so if a fire ever does hit here we will have a better chance of surviving. I have a sister and brother-in-law that live south of LA in Temecula which is far enough away so they're not impacted by the fire, however they do know people that had to evacuate and some that have lost houses. I can't imagine what that must be like. I'm also wondering how many people will be moving to other states to rebuild their lives.

Greg from northern Michigan. Look at the endless hours you spend on your property doing routine maintenance like cleaning up downed trees, burning brush piles, cutting fire wood, and mowing tall grassy areas. Trash buildup like this promotes and fuels forest fires, which is natures way of cleaning up the forest floor. Choosing to live in these natural areas comes with additional responsibilities like this. I think many people in our country would find it very difficult to last more than three days totally on their own without water, food, shelter, and some type of emergency aid. It's time to get back to basics and become better prepared for unplanned situations like this.

I agree with you being the first responder. A family I follow in Utah, Good Simple Living, they built their own home. They went to another state and purchased concrete siding. It looks just like wood, only it's 100% concrete. They also used metal for the roof. So, there is a family being the first responder. They are equipped with a fireproof house. You should see their land and the view they have there, awesome. Oh, and their daughter, 18, Nevah, flew by herself to Texas for a KZbin meet, and was harassed by a child predator, which was more than one man, and they followed her from the airport to her meet, and a different member of the bad guys, tried again to accoust her. I love watching people's real, but that was a few videos that scared and angered me. Wow. Watching you sharpen your chain, reminded me that you are the guy that taught me to look at the wood coming off the log as it is being cut. If the wood is fine, the chain is dull. If the wood is more like chips, it is sharp. Yep, learned that from you. I had a thought as you were guessing the weight of the round as you were piling them up beside the wood shed, wouldn't it be nice to have the weight displayed on your screen inside the excavator? I wonder if that's a real thing? Would be nice to have. No one thought it would flood in the NC mountains either, especially like it did. They city has already put the salt on the roads here in the Hickory area of the NC foothills. I'm shocked that they haven't announced school closer yet. Right now it's 11:00 am, Thursday. I'm lucky when it comes to getting unsubscribed. That's not happened to your channel, but it has a lot on China Uncensored. I love watching you move so much weight around without straining your back or body at all. Even better when it's really cold or hot, and you sit there nice and comfy. Thanks, Mike, another great video of your real. Thanks for sharing. See ya on the next one.❤

I've called the San Fernando Valley my home since 1958. I've seen the Santa Ana Winds blow and fires start because of the winds. The last time I saw something this devastating was in 1962 when most of Bel Air burned to the ground. That area was much smaller in size but the luxury homes that were destroyed was incredible. It took decades for it to come back. I don't think I will every see the Palisades come back during the rest of my life. The power of Mother Nature must never be underestimated. LA county for years has been cutting back on it's resources for wild fires and when those resources are needed most, they weren't there. For the last 40 years Los Angeles County has leased two "Super Scooper" fixed wing aircraft from Canada. For the amount of money spent on leasing those planes, they could have owned a fleet of fixed Aircraft for fire fights like this one.

LEAKING SUNROOF. My truck camper does the same thing. The only way that works 99% of the time is keeping all snow off the roof before and until the inside cools down. You get a little condensation while rinning,(heat goes through plastic faster than metal and insulated headliner). If you leave snow on your machine roof, it melts over the plastic sunroof, the water puddles around the seal, water expands when it freezes, it jacks up the plastic and leaks. Once warm again, the gasket material squishes back to where it was and you stand there scratching your head. Just keep the snow off the roof is the only thing that works for me!

Good morning! -26 yesterday morning in Fraser Flats, CO. Fortunately we live 3-miles away, so only -24. Actually easier to drive on the snow/ice at that temperature because snow/ice is stickier than at 32. Was reading this morning that self-driving cars are having problems with snow/ice and that the tire companies are developing special ($$$$$) tires. One of my biggest concerns is that self-driving car drivers will not develop the skills (intentionally and unintentionally)to take over and drive manually in bad conditions.

Perhaps when the term "First Responder" is used people are thinking of Police, Fire, Ambulance - more Govt Entities. Us preparers more tend to think of Ourselves as the First Responders, as far as Preparedness, and the first at the scene of the event - never thought of it like that Mike, Kudos that was a good call. Prayers continue for NC, and Ca fires as well. They NEED forest clearing and management Urgently in CA - when the "Santa Anna" winds can reach 90+ MPH it doesn't take long in the cluttered brush on the forest floor to spread WILDLY and it is a tragedy. ❤💯🙏 BTW only thing worse than the dirt is the mud lol :)

Up here in Canada we are not permitted to assist with fighting fires due to insurance reasons. We had fires here in British Columbia a couple years ago and the residents of rural areas that are set up for firefighting were told to leave their properties. Even an out of district firefighter can not assist unless he is asked to.

Mike, have you thought about adding 2 edge tamers to your tractor bucket, they bolt on and skid over the gravel or grass without digging in and causing turf damage or picking up much gravel.

I think I'm done with winter visiting. I'd be fine if the snow doesn't happen this weekend. Looks like you need a bigger bucket to pack firewood in. The little wood shed is a good idea at the HQ.

Hi Mike. The vehicle crash: Looks expensive!? SARCASM! 😆😆😆😁😁😁😁 Seriously. Doesn't take much for accident in snow. WHISTLE! Bo is so cute. Firewood: During our coldest winters. We would do 12 to 14 cords. We do wood heat during the days. We burn fuel oil at nights. Wind: Yes. It more bearable without the wind blowing. Thanks Mike. Say Hi to Melissa, Melissa's dad, Eva, Hunter, Levi, Kate, Tyler, & Hannah. Have a good Thrusday night of the 9th everyone. 🥰😊😉🥶👍❤️💜⚘️⚘️⚘️⚘️🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🌫 🌬

I cut my driveway with a 955k about a 13 degree slope when I built my house. Couldn't switch back the road. Did one long curve about 500 feet long. Steep but not to steep, easy enough to plow. Gotta love pa hills!👍

I was just telling our 30 year old daughter that you are the first responder every time anything happens to you or you are witnessing an event taking place. Not taking away from emergency services, but they are not here yet. It could take them any where fro 10 to30 minutes to arrive at locations that are rural.

That picture reminds me of my neighbors jeep a few years back. We lived on the Ohio river in northern Kentucky and his driveway was like that he didn’t make it to the bottom. Nothing hurt but his wallet. New vehicle required.

Ugh. Us Morgans have snow on the way in East Tennessee. The store shelves will be empty and minds lost.😂

Mike I have watched your videos for years and usually I watch them all the way. Today's video was excellent, you mentioned how good the oak firewood burned and the heat it gave off. Recently a friend off mine gave me some apple for fire wood, it is without a doubt the best firewood I've had, it burned better that good quality coal and lasted such a long time, the heat it gave off was better than beech, oak or any of the local hardwoods here in Scotland. I'm looking forward to your next address of the state of the union and your thoughts on your new man in the Whitehouse.
