Done that for two years now ❤, spacious boat, cold winters, warm inside , heatpump, electricity, water hot & cold... but no community. Lonelyness is not good, had to leave for the coldest months to get company from other people.

I can relate to a lot of this, other than "building a boat with a boat in the way" LOL I lived aboard an old wooden Owens cabin cruiser for about a year in the 90s, in a marina near NYC. Very, very cold winter. All I had was a kerosene safety heater, which I was afraid to leave burning at night...I used to sit on it in the morning while I had coffee. Water was a logistical problem in winter, also. But I loved it! Should have bought a boat back then, but I was still trying to be a grownup. It definitely planted a seed, though. Have a good, productive winter, and remember: slipper socks and hot water bottles!

Great Episode. Canada is brutal for winter living in an RV. Can't imaging a winter on a mooring ball with limited electricity. I suspect if we head into a bad economic depression, some will opt for boat life on anchor 3 seasons out of 4 in Canada. I'm on lake Huron's north channel, which has many protected anchorages. Thanks for showing people some reality.

we have 800W solar on the roof, 3K inverter, 4 x 100A lithium batteries - hopefully this will be enough this time around - we shall see in Quartzite this winter. Unfortunately prices for RV parks and marinas are going up and up - just as prices for gas and everything else. Great to have a group of friends to stay positive. Lovely boat!! Any way to add more daylight to living space ? Cheers from WA state!

You are making it look like sailboat life is gloomy,dark and depressing. I’m guessing the cold climate and long nights are to blame, partly. The community you have must help immensely. You and Hailey are true sailors in all respects and will hit everything head on. Looking forward for your refit episodes. Best of wishes to you two fine people. Bill from Fl.

Exactly. Anything warmer than 10 degrees is acceptable, (about as cold as when your breath appears in the air) but the 9 am to 4pm daylight days are the worst. It’s real, it’s raw, it’s valuable experience. But it’s more uncomfortable and difficult than we enjoy. And that’s important to recognize our own standards for comfort :)

Sailor Barry I love your boat it’s beautiful however being a farmer wooden boat owner I can see that you need work at the waterline and below your fasteners are rusted out and they will damage the wood. Also please save up some money so that you can repair that you can use phosphoric acid to clean the rust soaked wood.

My wife and I built TC on a tight budget. 3000’ of yellow cedar strip planking was glued and edge nailed with bronze ring nails. However we unfortunately had to skimp on the fastenings to the steam bent oak ribs so they’re galvanized iron. Not surprised that they need replacing after over 50 years.
@SailorBarry
@SailorBarry 12 күн бұрын
@mokulitch I just started renovating the galley and found the galvanized nails holding the ceiling planking on below the counter suffered a bit but overall everything else is looking pretty good. Slight rusting on the other fasteners. I’m sure they’re largely okay, some are probably toast but overall pretty good id say!
