CNN's Nick Paton Walsh walks with migrants attempting to cross the Darien Gap, a perilous jungle crossing between Colombia and Panama as they head north to seek asylum in the United States. "The Trek: A Migrant Trail to America" premieres on April 16 at 8 p.m. ET/PT on CNN's new Sunday primetime series, The Whole Story with Anderson Cooper.

I have some advice having worked in plenty of marshes and bottomland forests dealing with the sort of deep thick mud we're seeing here, which I call "sucky mud" because it sucks your feet and legs into it. I once got stuck up to my upper thighs in this sort of mud as I suddenly sunk and must have stepped into some sort of hole I couldn't see. Thank goodness one of the people with whom I was working was a tall muscular guy by the name of Sacha who worked out regularly. He literally pulled me up out of the mud. My bit of advice, which may not be sufficient, is that your foot gets caught this sort of mud, wiggle it aggressively! Wiggle your lower leg and ankle back and forth in any direction you can, or in all directions if possible, and it should release your foot from the mud and possibly your footwear, too. I hope these people made it. 🤞🙏

That is not to mention the millions more who haven’t been caught. Where are all of these people.? Who are feeding them and providing shelter, medical care, schooling. The USA tax payer is. Follow laws on the books and this wouldn’t be happening. Oh… I forgot if you follow Joe, you don’t have to follow laws or get arrested as you should. Innocent people are getting arrested and jailed. People cry and want to ban guns but they are ok with open borders and people dropping dead from overdoses. Overdose deaths would be cut in half if our border was closed. Instead they want to punish law abiding citizens by taking away our rights.

No the whole world does not. Lots of Americans are leaving the US for mexico, Canada, & Europe. The majority of African and Arab migrants go to Europe, while most Asian migrants go to Russia/Eastern Europe. The US is closer to reach for ppl in South America, that's why they come here. There are way more countries in Europe that have higher standards of living than the US. Ppl crossing the boarder cant as easily get to Europe nor afford to. The US is the only real option for these impoverished ppl who want to leave. Everyone these days want to live in Europe, including many Americans. But americans are so much poorer than europeans on average, that most americans cant even afford to leave their own state, much less the country. Whereas it's common place for europeans to travel often all over europe for relatively cheap. More Americans would move to Europe or Canada if they could.

Who wouldn't? Meanwhile legal immigrants can't get in. To me, the solution is simple. Strongly enforce the border, but make the paths to citizenship a little more attainable. We're not helping people by pretending we don't have a border. We're damaging our economy, creating dangerous human trafficking scenarios, and needlessly complicating our immigration system. All the Real Patriots in the comments whining about them coming to the US "illegally": 1) The original white "Americans" stole this land from the natives and claimed it as their own, it's not "your" land, and it never will be. You're just fortunate enough that your ancestors plopped themselves on stolen land. 2) If you're so angry that they keep coming here, you should ask yourselves what country meddled in their country's affairs for the sake of robbing them of their natural resources and left them in such a terrible state that they need to flee for safety first.

At some point we need to be more realistic about who "owns" land. Not a single country today has their original borders of unclaimed territory. Even many of the natives were nomadic and didn't claim any part of the land. When you forcibly take land and hold it completely uncontested for hundreds of years, at some point we need to accept that it belongs to the current occupiers. The "this is stolen land so you need to be happy with immigration" is just so childish and silly.
@sergeant_salty
@sergeant_salty Жыл бұрын
1) this land wasn't stolen, it was CONQUERED. Indians fought for it and lost. gave themselves diseases raiding settler camps for clothing. and before that, the Indians did plenty of conquering of their own 2) if America is this evil racist country that is the sole reason for the poor conditions of every country south of our border, why would it make sense for them to come here? why would anyone want to live directly under the rule of the government that "destroyed their countries" or whatever you're claiming? "My country sucks and isn't America" is a reason to "flee" your country. the people who are leaving their countries are too pathetic to fight for and rebuild their homelands. they absolutely will never give a shit about America if they don't care about their real home best decision we could make would be to build a wall, top it with machine guns, and then build a second wall out of the people who were stupid enough to approach the first wall
