Being able to inspire thousands of people from all parts of the world to take time out of their lives, rally people together and participate in such a labor-intensive (gluing hundreds of life-size posters to walls?) and sometimes life-threatening (on the boarder in Juarez, Mexico?!) project is undeniably remarkable and absolutely beautiful. Thank you, JR, for your unique artistic expression and persistence of vision...and for showing us that we all have more in common than we may think.

I thought this was pretty interesting. Giving people a quick and easy way to print large pictures is pretty cool, but having it become this widespread is amazing. Giving people a voice, however small, is a noble act.

Actually not for enjoying creating but actually more to express the feelings inside them and remove the emotions and passion inside them. Usually artists enjoy this process. The point is to create there feelings.

For now this is how I would define my defination of Art. I will be as clear as possible. Since I am obviously confusing people. Actions work better than words for me at times. "The Artist aims to 'create' a piece that fills thea self with love from their own original perspective through their own intuition of their own emotions and love, via creativity, vision and imagination. Art should fill people with feelings & emotions of the artists creation, but not be the aim of their creation".

Some people have said they felt like a totally different person... not like they was refreshed or had a life changing awakening that it made them feel different. That is why people who have operations where body parts are changed that there is lot of people saying that they have different memories and things like this. The heart is where the emotions first hit usually you feel it round this area and get butterflies. The heart is not just a pump.

No Banksy is on a completely different level. He creates art first in my view... he creates a picture then you work out what it means from your perspective. It's brilliant because it can be taken in so many different directions. Sticking a few posters on a wall is just like putting adverts up. My point is it's not really clear what JR is trying to do with the faces which makes it: "Guerrilla Activism".

You miss the point of the video, he is not saying that giving people large pictures and so on, is this great thing that can save the world, but that something so simple as a picture can have such a widespread impact. Summary should read: "Something as simple as a picture can have such an effect, so of course art can change lives and the world". And about what he is doing, I would pay him, I would pay anyone who is trying to make the lives of pople better.

Lots of haters hating on a social art project that is defined by the user. If the user wants to make a political statement or just encourage a sense of community what's the problem. Not everything has to be a Monet created without any degree of social statement. Art as an opening to a wider discourse has a valid and long history. I think this project is interesting and relates to the modern world. What I don't understand is why Justin Timberlake had to use a fake accent in his presentation.

I think everyone is a artist. So as a artist... I decide that art has no use. It's to make people feel or not feel, to have there own point of view... and to show there own creative feelings on paper. It's to be what ever you want it to be... a blank canvas can go in any direction. A blank canvas is art... unraveling it's self. Art is about showing feelings. But as I said there is no wrong answer in art. ;-) No contradictions. Facebook? when I look at someone I see I have a lot in common!

Basically art is more than just a photo or a picture, or sculpture or even the creation of many tools. In one line, Art is emotions expressing themselves. Art comes out of love of emotion or the heart. A artists job is to capture them. Leonard di vinci new what art was.

It depends with activism. A lot of activism comes out of anger and fear. Sometimes it comes out of ego too. But some activism comes from the heart. But the thing with activism is that it's a cause. A cause usually has another side to it... Where as art can contradict it's self look evil and still be art and people don't mind because it's art, it's not meant to imply it is right. The thing with activism is it's usually about winning or being right in some way that sometimes people forget to care.

"Hahaha, Where all idiots." Evidently some of us are more so than others. How did things come to be as they are now? Big Bang (which is can be universally verified by anyone if they are intelligent enough). While this isn't necessarily 100% accurate, based on current info it is our best theory. This makes me feel emotion, therefore this is art based on your own definition of it. These photos move me, as does this project. Art isn't anything, art is what you perceive it to be ;)

"Evidently some of us are more so than others." Are you talking about me or you. I find that a person who calls someone a idiot is generally a idiot. It's bit like saying to a cat you're a idiot. The cat will give you a blank look and walk away and you stand there looking like a idiot calling a cat a idiot... or a person. The big bang explains the process of a bang... it doesn't explain where the dot everything came out of came from. Or how it got there.

We probable agree on a lot of things. A piece of art should make you feel emotions, if it doesn't make you feel emotions, then it is not art. And if you create a picture without emotions then it is not really art to you it's just a drawing.

Emotions don't start in the brain... but you can believe that if you want. Emotions and feelings start with tingling all down the back and though the heart. then your brain lights up like a Christmas tree to deal with these emotions, and make rational sense of them. But believe what you wish.

Art is something that makes a species feel something and then want to create something to show this emotion. A bit like inspiration but based on any emotion. I even think tools where made out of the struggle of emotions and creative mind. That to me is art. But Art to me is overwhelming feelings/emotions/visions that make a person must express or they can not be happy with themselves and they need it to be created to output the energy. They may want to share it too, if they captured it right.

If I look at the picture with no knowledge of the events. It is art. It is women worried about with to do. If I have no knowledge of anything else how can I see it as activism. Since I have no view point. No understanding of what is going on par what is shown in the picture. I don't even know the time period, I can assume and attempt to work out the time period. But to me this is art. What ever is attached to the image after and how it's used is activism.

I just want to clear up I am talking about art as in the person who is creating the art... or looking at art... not as in practicing a skill. As in the art of photography. That's just refining skill. I am on about art is not a object... "art is the ability to create feelings through creativity and imagination", that to me is the definition of art. Art is not about ethics or a message... it can raise ethical questions, and be seen as wrong. But then it has created feelings of contempt.
@LaughingMan44

Art comes from the brain actually, as does every fibre of our being. " Activism is not art because you can't change the word art with activism" no one is trying to, I said this activism AND art, I was not saying they are the same thing. The rest of this comment doesn't even make sense and has nothing to do with anything.

The paper industry really has very little to do with deforestation. In fact a lot of paper comes from forests which exist just to be used as paper. The more paper we use, the more reason there is to plant more trees. Just like cows and chickens are very successful species because we consume them.

What I mean is sometimes activism creates a side which is bad and does not aim to help all life. The theater generally creates something out of imagination and dreaming or from real life that kind of art will always exist just not always on a stage... Many people including Shakespeare said life is a play... that means life is the theater... so just because it's not on a stage doesn't mean that it won't exist... it just means people may only actually see it in real life rather than on a stage.

If you never looked at a picture or image and got zero emotion, then the artist has failed. Art is to create emotion. As someone mentioned before. He is no Banksy. You can't use art. You create art. You could possible use paintings or pictures to create a gallery. But you create art... and art should make people feel some kind of emotion. Sadness... curiosity, inspiration, amazement. Even love.

No you use a frame to put a picture on. You use a canvas to put paint on you sell a picture with paint on. Art is the bit that is created from the emotions of looking at those paints. So you don't sell art. You sell paintings. :-) You can't use art... ha. That's like saying you can use feelings... you can manipulate feelings and people in to having feelings in hopes to get them to do something, but this usually doesn't work. As feelings are subjective to each person. Art is to create feelings.

'"most people on Facebook do this art" Okay so you agree it's art? Thanks, have a nice day.' Guess you missed the sarcasm of this statement. It's bit like saying doodles on 'My Draw Thing' app, is art. I think that art has to be something special and not just slapping some adverts on a wall. If you think that's art go to any run down area or look at any music festival with adverts for gigs and festivals. "They're expressing their perception of the world on ther faces"...? Like facebook?

I think you have the right to have a opinion to say that this doesn't make me feel anything. I mean if it was disgusting at least I could say I feel like I just washed my mouth with razor blades and after seeing that I feel like ripping my eyes out with a spoon. But if it doesn't make you feel anything than it doesn't. What's the point in lying and saying it's good. If ten people say it's good and one say it's bad unless there a prodigy I would not give a crap.

I would say that activism also comes from the heart. You have to feel something to want to change it, and I think that both art and activism come from someone wanting express to the outer world what exists in their inner world. The idea that art is seen after activism stops leads me to ask you what art you're talking about. I see a lot of theatre that is momentary. Is it still art if it ceases to exist? Also, art comes and goes just as causes do. We don't make portraits in oil anymore.

Art comes from the heart. Activism is not art because you can't change the word art with activism. You can paint in activism but that is art. Activism use the posters and pictures for protests. But art stays art and doesn't turn in to activism. Art is not activism and activism is not art. Art is seen well after activists are shouting for there causes. A cause comes and goes while art remains while people express from the heart. Activism is taking action for a cause. Artists show their emotions.

I agree that photos can be art. Not all the photo's will be art. Most will be bland like Facebook photos. It's activism because the point of the photos is to bring people together. "One year of turning the world inside out" is the title. Meaning it's activism to change the world. It's not art that may change the art world. It's all about activism. I don't think this art at all perhaps where the picture is put is art of the person who puts the picture up as in creative though.

It's very simple to grasp. You don't start drawing a painting without some feeling otherwise you are just coping real life. Buy a camera. Art comes out of emotion. When I say 'love of emotion'. I simple mean emotions a person has experenced via something they look at or some life experience that made them feel something so strongly that they had to create it some how. Art comes out of the He-Art. Very simple because most emotions come out of love for something or someone. Fear comes out of love.

Do you think I have not though about the trauma and being a life changing operation... do you think that it is so easy to change that one near death accident makes them completely new people. It may wake someone up to the life they have not being living but when I say change there personality I mean emotional perception of how life is. As in before say they loved going rock climbing or going to the pub and then after they like reading or painting. Total change in a none linear direction.

The point of art is to have no use... as in not be done for the purpose of anything other than being art. If art is done for a cause or purpose it's activism not art. Art is meant to make you feel something. The artist doesn't wish to tell you a story but let you make a story out of the art. However am sure many would disagree. Art is meant to be done for the soul purpose of enjoying creating. Not for vanity of others loving you. :-)

This to me is only going to raise more questions and not do anything. To make a movement you set up groups, you bring people together, you set up talks you set up art with a message and with address, meeting places, emails, phone, youtube channels, fb pages and websites to contact. Obviously depending on the area you do which is best. You make a movement happen, you wear t-shirts with information on. You do things to bring attention to the cause. YOU MAKE A LOUD NOISE! I think you are implying I am dumb there in a backwards patronizing way. I get the point that he is "trying" to get people to show they exist via a picture, and classes this as art. Me personally I class this as activism. I don't really see it as art, just like I don't see a poster for a political group as art. I don't think they would understand it. If it was me and pictures of people I knew I would wonder what they was doing and I would ask them. And then I would say set up a protest.

Maybe I might see it as art when someone blows one of the walls up and says... this is how war works... and takes a picture of it before and after... then I might see it as art. Many people these days have nothing better to do so they look for a life purpose. Many look for purpose in a cause. While I like the cause, I just think the way it is done is lacking. Art is beautiful and wonderful and important and it can change the world. This is why it must never be funded by govt. We need a separation of art and state for the same reasons we need a separation of church and state. The combination of art and state is too much concentration of power. Goebels knew this.

Writing can be art too. Poetry can be art, you should read some, poets don't use grammar. Art is not limited by it's capacity. Anything can be art if you wish to see it as art... but art has no cause. That means it doesn't serve to win, doesn't wish to be more correct or less correct... it can be stupid it can be smart... but has to be created out of emotions from the heart... and for it to be noticed as art it must show strong emotions. Even bad art containing strong emotions is art.

That's not true. You obviously don't have a clue who he is or what he has done. He has built buildings, built hospitals. Had protests against war. Added both sides. had a Grenade chucked at him but it bounced out of his room... and didn't kill him. What Thich Nhat Hanh has done is truly worthy of being recognized. It's not sticking the odd poster up, in such a way that most people will miss the point. He makes his statements clear. And is a activist for peace and unity in the world.

That's great, you defined art. I don't agree with your definition, by my definition this is activism utilising art as a medium for social change. There you go, by your definition this is not art, by mine it is, so now you realise the futility of calling something 'not art' when others call it art? You would be wise to realise this and not waste our time further.

A photograph can be art but only if the picture tells a story which makes you feel emotions. In some way this could be seen as art. I have said this but to me it's not real art. It's just pictures of faces, the very point in which to be used in a activist way in which to bring people together. This is not art it's activism. Maybe some people don't see the line between art and activism... but for me art is not about a ethical statement. That's activism.
