I am a Navy vet from the '70s and my son is a former CTIC, now mustang (non-LDO) LTJG. I don't know the reason you got out, but I hope you find what you're looking for. The transition to the civilian world can be daunting and very scary. And you are correct, civilians can never understand what it means to be a veteran. That part of your life never leaves you. It becomes part of your DNA. I hope you have applied for all VA benefits. Service Connected disabilities (even 10%) give you access to some great benefits. The VA also has a massive suicide prevention program. I have shared your videos with several people that were/are considering joining the Navy. Best of luck to you!

I’ve retired from the Navy after 25 years and you’re 100% correct, we are definitely not the same as we were when we first came in. I’m sorry you had to experience a crappy period in your life, just know that it has made you a stronger person. We were always taught as leaders; Sailors, Ship and then Self. Living by that ethos allowed me to be a great mentor, a big brother and even a father figure. It’s unfortunate that you had some bad times in the Navy that seemed to outweigh the good times. I wish I had the opportunity to have been there for you during that dark time as a leader. I have always looked after all Sailors I have led and raised them to be come effective adults and better human beings. I am very proud to have served and I am proud for those who have served. Keep your head in the game and you will excel at anything you put your heart in to!

@@ShaeTaylorLife Yes and No. I have seen in my field that things like attention to detail, duty and mental toughness that I learned in the Navy, makes my thought process different than my co-workers. It makes it easier as my Admin pretty much leaves me alone for the most part. The harder thing is that because of that mindset I learned is that some (co-workers) are put off by it and it can become lonely at times and people don't understand the thought process. It is what it is. Keep being you.

There is such a light about you. I am joining the Navy as a CTR and I leave for bootcamp in May and your videos has helped prepare me mentally into joining and giving me a bigger picture of information I can't find anywhere else. Thank you for sharing the good and the bad. I am glad you are more in tune with your purpose and are starting to find yourself again. I can't even imagine what you have went through! I am curious because I am trying to plan out earning my masters. What did you like about cybersecurity and what did you not like? Did you use tuition assistance while you were active duty?

Thanks so so much for the kind words!!!! I am only at the start of my cyber degree, but I will tell you it is heavy tech wise. I’m not really a techie but I am taking it with my GI bill because I need to expand my knowledge to get a better (hopefully) paying job. I def would use TA once you’re in!!!

Congrats on taking the plunge man! I was in 2002-2006 and left a CTR2. I worked towards a BS in IT Management while I was active and man, you really need to plan and it is freak'n rough. Best advice I got when enlisting was make sure you use the military, otherwise they will use you. In order to max out your educational benefits (or any benefit for that matter) you're going to be in for a bureaucratic run around for the next several years. Hopefully things have improved but who knows. Make sure you plan, plan, plan and plan for your exit. You'll be walking out with a mostly redacted job history so you'll have to find a way to ensure you're marketable after you leave.
