I would suggest to first create a demo game and create a steam page. Then in every video have a pinned comment for wishlist and in description. And maybe remind everyone at the end of the video. That way every video will be a marketting tool. You never know which one will hit and make people wishlist, not because of game but because of supporting you. Keep going and remember it is a marathon.

Best of luck to you! I started a very similair journey 2 months ago. I'm currently developing a small village simulation. Our stories are actually very similair when I think about it. About your game, I think visuals/graphics are of extreme importance. I wouldn't go for realism on your first game, a stylized approach would probably be better. Perhaps play around with coral that gives light, in intervals or pulsating. Maybe combine it with plants breeding cycles if you plan to create a plant eco system as well. flesh it out with seahorses, crabs, snails. Perhaps a waterfleas population which will function as part of the food chain. Just some ideas that came to mind. Best of luck mate!

Pretty cool! (Just so you know, I can barely code a game, so take that as you will with my advice.) On the art aspect, I like it, but I think giving the fish some more scales would add a lot. On the game aspect, I noticed that it’s kind of hard to see the fish at times in the video. (Although, it’s usually only when theres only a few fish OR when they move away from the ingame camera.) I think that the scales as listed above would help them stand out more, or also giving them more vibrant colors compared to the water could help. I think that this would be a game I’d be interested in once it’s done! Good luck on your journey!
@WyrmyrGames7 ай бұрын
I agree on the scales. Just need to figure out a good way to do it that fits well with the overall aesthetic. I agree, there is a general washed-out feel to the entire game that makes it hard to see. I've gone back and forth with the colors and have made a few tweaks in the last few days. I'll get into it in my next Devlog. Thanks for the feedback and support!

Cartoony graphics are fantastic in indie games, I’d only recommend adding to the fish like give them some kind of texture but nothing too much just some little bit of detail or maybe experiment with making them 2 to 3 colours per fish instead of a solid colour for a fish. Whatever you do don’t give up.

Your fish a very funny - that's great! I would double down on the jerky motions like when they're feeding. You can make a puzzle-like game about building a specific ecosystem. The player is tasked to build a species equilibrium in a small pond. You can watch videos about building a fish tank system. like from the channel "thanks for nothing". It really has some mesmerizing zen feel like in townscaper. In this scenario you won't need to build specific levels. The gameplay will evolve from the systems.

@WyrmyrGames7 ай бұрын

@coldkuts4957 ай бұрын
I admire your dedication and hope you'll be able to see this through! I was wondering what is the game loop for your game? A game needs to be fun before anything else. When feeding your fish, is your goal to grow the population to be able to sell it, so that you can buy a bigger fish so that you can growth its population so that you can sell to buy more, etc. Or do you have a list of orders of NPCs wanting specific species and the way you feed your fish will help you attain those species to complete the order, etc. By figuring out your game loop, the details of your game will then follow. For example, maybe building a hyper realistic river (which can be pretty difficult to achieve without it looking a little uncanny) might not be the solution. Maybe a small aquarium that you slowly grow when getting coins through your game loop. An aquarium could also be much simpler and easier to achieve for a single dev. I hope these suggestions give you some inspiration and I wish you good luck on your journey
@WyrmyrGames7 ай бұрын
Thanks for the suggestions. I didn’t get into that in the video did I? Basically it’s a game of discovery. Feeding the fish causes them to evolve into new types. It’s a mystery to the player what they need to feed the fish to get them to change AND what they will change into. There will be a huge evolution tree that will take experimentation and maybe some grind to fully discover. A fish tank definitely has a place in the game but I’d like to focus on wild environments and ecosystems.

Hey man, your approach and outlook is inspiring. I hope you this project will help you learn how to make the games you envision and that you have fun along the way. I have some feedback on your game idea as well: I think the concept is interesting and there is a lot of potential paths you could go down. One thing I suggest to keep in mind is what is fun to you when you play simulation games and what choices do you want the player to make. In your current project and what you described you have planned I feel like the path for the player is very linear. They choose between a few types of food and the rest is the simultation. One aspect that I appreciate in simulation games is the amount of interactivity between player and simulation. In Cities Skylines for example all of the players choices matter a lot and it is a layered complex system. Players need to balance which buildings go where, bulding density, road layout, needs of citizens and industrial progress and it all ties back into eachother, determining if your city as a whold is successful. There are many options to succeed and many to fail and each choice can sway in one of the two directions. Its a hard thing to get right in game dev and I would suggest to constantly think about how the choice of a player can be made meaningful, how the player can constantly influence the simulation and how to give them goals. There is definitely some of that in the ideas you mentioned but I would try to make sure it doesnt become a simulation where the player sets some initial conditions, maybe updates them once in a while and just watches, but a game where the player actively does and has to influence the simultation to succeed in their goal and has to deal with unexpeted situations. Some ideas I could think off right away: - The player has to grow the food for certain fishes but other fishes might want to eat those growing plants - Fishermen that provide you with meat in exchange for fishing some of your fish at random - Pray fish which swim from area to area on their own hunting certain other fish species - Shrimps & Snails that can help keep amonia and algee levels in the water at bay but if too noumerous will steal all the food - Making the speed of the game is set so that the player constantly needs to deal with something but also sees the effects of their actions in reasonable time
@WyrmyrGames7 ай бұрын
Those are some awesome ideas and some good things to keep in mind! The game will be quite simple compared to many other management games, for the sake of scope and me actually finishing the game. While everything is simulated, nothing really will happen unless the player feeds the fish. Discovering what each fish needs to change is the core of the game and leads down many branching paths. Thanks again for the feedback and I’ll keep those suggestions in mind!

As for the business side, I’ve been watching @thomasbrush for a long time. I haven’t gone through his course but I think I’ve watched 90% of his videos on KZbin. More recently @howtomarketagame videos have filled in a lot of gaps for what type of game to make and how to get it to the finish line with specific marketing strategies.

This is a great goal. You have a good idea of scope vs time. I think you should plan out some timelines for features anyway because even if the time estimate is wrong, planning always makes things more efficient one way or another. I'm actually also in a similar-ish type of job and learning coding and modeling for Unreal. Will be keeping up with your journey.
