One Zero For All .22 LR And .22 Airguns

I want to shoot all kinds of .22 and wondered if there's a common distance to zero them at. I couldn't find the answer so I figured it out myself.
I mostly used shooterscalculator.com for the graphs and got some data for the ballistic coefficients from manufacturer websites.

I tried zeroing my .22 at 25 yards but took a shot at 30 yards and it was spot on.

I guess you got lucky and zeroed at 30 yards when shooting at 25 yards :p Depending on what .22 you're shooting, especially airguns, it could be that 20-30 yards is pretty much the same.

Or zero to closest desired distance and treat that zero as a placeholder then a trajectory calculation print out can serve as a dope card to indicate the come-up for exacting hits for any other distance that you are shooting to.

If that works for you, you should keep doing that. Personally I don't think holding under makes a lot of sense, so I'll go with the zero from the video ;)

@@BitsOfInterest when the closest zero is treated as a placeholder you never need to hold under. Remember too that when the rife’s bore is at an angle greater than horizontal the bullet path will cross line of sight twice. This is how it is possible to sight in at a close distance and be zeroed for a further distance. All of this suggests one zero might be adequate when shooting a relatively big target but if the target is small a close zero can be abandoned for greater target distance via elevation adjustment or holdover per dope card. The bottom line is just this any close distance zero when treated as a placeholder permits use of trajectory knowledge for the shooter to hit where aimed at any distance the bullet can get to nose-on.

Damn! Love the content. I've been shooting alot of 22LR. My pistols are zeroed at 20 yards, rifles with red dots 30 yards, rifles with scopes 50 yards. Was just an analysis that works for me. Your video does give my analysis and results further data. Liked and subbed!

I shoot CCI Mini-Mag HP’s with a 30yd zero and reconfirm my zero at 70yd. That puts me on all the way out to 80yd shooting my 1.5” spinning target without holds 🎯 100yd is about a 3” hold

I just decided to take my time and really dial on my red dot. I had it zeroed at 25 yards. I just use it shoot Gophers. I was extremely happy with my grouping so I went out hunting. I don't know distances while gopher hunting but I'd say I shooting at one maybe 30+ yards and holy hell was I shooting high haha. I think I'll try to zero it a bit further out. Then I'll do some practice at different yards and see how it shoots.

@lobbyrobby There are so many variables that play into this that I can't tell what's happening. If you're dead on at 25 and way high at 30 something's wrong for sure 😜 The speed and weight of your projectile matters a lot. Edit: maybe you have it sitting very high above the barrel so that you get more of a curve in your trajectory than if it would sit lower.

If you keep in mind that in most cases you'll have a near zero and a far zero, then yes. If you have your far zero at 50 yards with 22lr high velocity, you already have your near zero close to 30 yards, so you don't have to change it. If you shoot 22lr subsonic your near zero would be 30 and your far zero around 35 yards. What the 30 yard zero allows you to do here is just have one target at 30 yards to zero high velocity and subsonic. Just make sure it's your near zero. You'll see the difference if you shoot further out which zero you just set. With 22lr high velocity you should be dead on at 30 yards and 50 yards. With sub sonic it's 30 and 35 yards.
