I grew up in coal mining country (Jefferson & Harrison Counties). My grandfather, Dad, and uncles all worked for Hanna Coal company in shaft mines. We called “surface mines “ STRIP MINING. In 1968 (before starting at OSU) I worked for a short time planting trees in an old strip mine. I recall “copper water” in the streams near Piney Fork caused by discharge from the mine. When I go back now I am amazed at how beautiful the area it is! Natural gas is the new coal in my old area, but even the gas pipes don’t ruin the beauty. Thanks for your video!

When I was a kid all they way up in my teens, the family would go camping there , mid 70’s to late 80’s. We would spend 2week each year and I can say that those camp groups didn’t look the same. We would stay in camp site D witch had been strip mine again, lower end , there was a big lake there but now it’s gone😢back in the day there was a furniture company that would bring free fire wood in dump trucks and dump it off. People would hear the truck coming and run to get there share of it 😆 it was fun when the truck came as a kid to get fire wood. So much wildlife back then. The Canadian geese would come to get feed and the Beavers would scare the Dickens out of you at night when we go fishing by smacking their tails on the water. This video sure did bring back a hole lot of memories for sure . I’m 61 now and I can say it makes me want to go back and remember the good old days as a kid having fun with friends and family. Another wonderful video! You both have such an easy, informative style that makes coming along on your journey truly feel like I am traveling with friends! May I ask what you budget for gas on a typical month? My full-time North America "meander" starts in January, and I'm trying to estimate costs as my launch date gets closer.
@oneadVANtureatatime3 жыл бұрын
We are spending 150 dollars a month on gas. We don't like to fill up more than once a week if we can help it. That said our first year we drove more and it took us a bit to learn to take it slow and not hurry. We spent as much as 400 dollars a month then....we can't afford that now 😂 Take it slow and plan out a path that you can have the best weather. Congratulations on getting close to hitting the road! We hope to see you out there.😀

What's your philosophy on using a generator? I noted you talked about your batteries getting older and having to drive to fine sun for your solar panels.
@oneadVANtureatatimeАй бұрын
Since this video we have upgraded to 400 amp hours of lithium battery and 500 watts of solar. We heat the van with a Webasto heater that is plumbed into our gas tank, and we cook with propane. We have a small dometic chest frig and a separate chest freezer in the back under the bed. We find with this set up and our DC-to-DC charger (we can charge the lithium batteries while driving) we are doing fine on our power usage. We can go about 4 days with no sun or driving but after that our power supply is diminished. We haven't had the need for a generator but if we were cooking via induction and not propane, I think we would need one as a backup. Hope that helps.

Hey guys love your videos! I’m thinking about getting a Solis on the promaster chassis, but hesitant on choosing a promaster? Since your van is a promaster, can you give some insights on its reliability, what issues you had with engine/ transmission, and how many miles you have on it? Thank you.
@oneadVANtureatatime3 жыл бұрын
We have nearly 90k miles on our van now going on 4 years. So far we have had 2 ignition coils go bad( 400) dollar repair bill each. We think our transmission has slipped or hard shifted twice. We have gone a month without another slip so we may have dodged a bullet there. Also we had a leak in our transmission coolant line. (300) dollars. Over all we are happy with it's performance. We do like how many are being used by hospitals, Amazon, FedEx, ups, cable companies..So cheap parts should be available for a long time. We did see a Solis/Promaster build that looked amazing. Whatever you decided we hope to see you on the road. Good luck and have fun.😎

I wish more van lifers, RVers & campers with platforms banned together & do what you guys do, not only to help clean up, but to bring more attention to this plague. 🤘😉🤙

Do you think the state will start charging once it takes over?
@oneadVANtureatatime2 жыл бұрын
I hope not. If they start charging a lot of people probably won't go at all.
@scottplumer3668 Жыл бұрын
The state took over several years ago, and so far it's still free. They'd have to put in a lot more infrastructure to start charging, so I don't see that happening anytime soon, but I don't think it will be free forever.

I think I was trying to relay that you don't have to pay to get into the state park. In the west you have to pay a fee to just enter into pretty much any state park.

@ 5:25 Hi Dave and Carrie! I wanted to give a little love back to you guys. I wanted to share this video with you concerning your battery issues. I took this young mans advise about a year or so ago. I scored 2 of these batteries on eBay for $575 w/shipping included. I have 190 watts on the roof that is running an ICECO 45 liter fridge at a constant 32-34 degrees year around here in FLORIDA. It is also running 2 MaxxAir fans and the exhaust fan for the toilet that I asked you about last week. (Yes, I took your advise and vented the toilet.) I want you to know that I truly believe these batteries to be worth all that Will Prowse says they are. I wanted to send you the link that sold me on them so you could decide for yourself. Will also has some really informative videos on this topic that you may find helpful. kzbin.info/www/bejne/gmWWk3Sord6msLc

We appreciate this tip for lithium batteries! I watched the video plus checked out his website. He is finding batteries for half the price battleborns. I liked how easy it was for him to connect to the charge controller. You did well finding this source and we will consider doing the same! Do you have any issues keeping the batteries cool? I am impressed you can survive a Florida summer. 😎
@bigsilverbear41873 жыл бұрын
@@oneadVANtureatatime Hi Dave & Carrie, I haven't had any issues with my Valence batteries. I have no issues with keeping my batteries cool. These batteries have been a blessing. Another plus to these batteries is the size. I can EASILY fit both of my batteries in a regular old plastic milk crate. They take up a lot less space than other lithium batteries. As you know, every bit of real estate in a van is very important. Feel free to shoot a message my way if you have any further questions. Take care and travel safe.
