Ignore the keyboard warriors matey, they always have the option not to watch. The vast majority of these 'experts' have probably never even been in a tent. I love your videos and am perfectly capable of making my own decisions on what to buy and what not to buy. You provide a great service and stimulate the mind of those of us wishing we could do what you are doing. Keep it up

When I was young lol, me and my mates bought a cheap tent, sleeping bags and a pot+ frying pan out of supermarket, some pot noodles, loads of cheap beer and cider lol, camped on beach, fire lit ect good craic but oops no cooking oil or water lol, ended boiling up cider added to pot noodles and fried the burgers in a mixture of beer/cider lol you couldnt make it up lol and to top it all off it lashed out of the heavens all night long, tent stayed dry though, didnt feel cold in sleeping bags but alcohol prop helped us sleep for at least an hr or maybe two lol ,lessons learned for later in life lol but enjoyed every minute of it.

I used to take tin food 50 odd years ago, before dried food was perfected to what it is to day, now I seldom take tin food. I never ever took the 2 min noodle stuff, full of MSG and never filling. Now days when I go into the mountains I take pre-prepared food of my own making, even to the point of filled rolls that can last up to 5 days and still taste fresh(ish). Ciabatta rolls filled with cheese, sweet pickle and yeast flakes. These should be pre pared without touching the food and then wrapped (tightly) in several layers of foil. By observing hygiene no mold will appear. This has always been my preferred way. I take steaks, frozen solid and wrapped in foil. these will last 2 days before I have to cook them. Don't forget this is for the mountains of NZ where you can go for weeks without seeing a soul. You adapt your needs to your (own) environment . Another thing that we can do here ( and I always do) is to carry in a container full of food and bury it !! This gives you a safety net and enables you to stay longer or if a storm blows in .This of course is all pre-planned . This is where tin food comes into its own again. On the subject of cheap tent Vs expensive tent I recently purchased a tent from well respected company . I put it up in the garden and left it for 4 days ( this is how I test most of my gear). There were no strong winds, but 2 days of rain, the tent came apart at the seams. It has been replaced. A cautionary warning there, Always test your gear before using in in the field. Well, that's my 2 penny worth. ATB Cheers from the mountains of NZ 😀😀

Nice honest review Dan, totally agree with your thinking as you would probably upgrade the sleeping mat and pillow first and then when the weather gets colder you would upgrade the tent and sleeping bag (though a bag liner would make a difference for cooler nights). The stove and pots are fine for simple 'cooking'. I still want to see you trying to get the tent back into it's bag though, so was disappointed that you didn't film that 😂

Our 1st tent was a family tent as there were 5 of us, we bought the gear and tried it all out in the back garden, next to the pond, The 3rd day, I set a big fan on it and the water sprinklers, I'm glad we did. We experienced a light rain storm and realized it didn't really hold up, But it was definitely great in the garden, we had a brilliant time, have added a lot of gear, and our camping is in the garden 😊

Great video! The world needs more people like you who encourage others who want to take that step to camping but haven’t yet because of a tight budget. There’s no shame in having budget gear! There’s always a bargain to be had second hand and also army surplus stuff is great value. Keeping it down to Earth and real is where it’s at. I’ve un-subbed some KZbiners who have become ££££ kit snobs and influencers, that stuff gets on my tits.

Took my son camping lots of times when he was little. Gelert 3 man, inner first (with pole ring/pins) and a Decathlon 4 man pop-up. Still have both, still all fine..don't think he'd go with me now though as he's 26! We used to have sweet and sour pot noodles, and cook full English on a Campingaz Party Grill. Happy days 🥰 Love your down to earth-no-nonsense videos - thank you!

When tent camp, my go-to tent is my 20 yr. old Ozark Trail tent I bought from Walmart for around $30. To this day I have yet to find a compelling reason for the purchase of some of these $200+ tents. I believe a good tarp-over-tent combo will up the game for any tent, even a cheap big box store tent. If I'm solo camping I actually prefer a hammock & tarp setup in rough terrain or foul weather.

the flashing light option is known as emergency/distress light 😇 Yes: burgers, noodles and don't forget the pancakes! The thing with the inflatable stuff is that you're tempted to fully blow it up but that doesn't mean it will be the most comfortable way🤣 I think it's great that you show people a way to start camping without spending extreme amounts of money. It's exactly as how you say... slowly upgrade certain items as you discover your likes and needs. 👍🏻👍🏿✅ tips: *put the inflatable pillow in your fleecejacket to make it comfortable; *put a piece of plastic underneath your inner tent to protect the seal, keep it clean and stay dry incase of rain; *to prevent the sliding between the matras and the sleepingbag and to trap some more bodyheat, make a easy cover that slides over the top and bottom of the matras out of a material you prefer. 💞

Weather aside - a cheap tent will keep the midges and ticks off you - which could easily put any first time camper off for life! I use a £12 tent when no (absolutely no) rain forecast (less than 1kg) to deal with ticks...hate em. 👍

Depending on the time of year and where I was I often liked tinned Irish Stew and some french bread to eat, makes a filling meal, I did go OTT for my coffee though and used a stove top Mocha pot and fresh ground coffee, which I let down a bit with boiling water. I am thinking of getting back to camping and getting a 2 man compact tent like the Vango Banshee 2.

You could use a cheap pop up tent eg like this and if it was going to be wet, pitch a tarp over it to shed the water so it wouldn't matter too much if it wasn't totally waterproof. That might be an idea to make the cheaper gear practical in more extreme weather.

Good vid Dan. I used a Quechua one of those pop ups at Loch Lomond when it poured down and never leaked and I think I only paid £30 for it, so some cheap stuff can be ok. My £8 Chinese stove just died after 3 years and about 30 camping trips. One of the most comfortable airbeds I have bought was only £16 off eBay and I do have a couple over £50 not as good. I used a cheap cook set for 3 years and just upgraded to a Ridge Monkey which I do like. The good thing about camping is everyone can do it not like some other pursuits which can cost a fortune to take part.

My first time wild camping on my own, Western Australia. I set up my gear on a old pathway of some sort, the mosquitos and flies at dusk were friendly to say the least. After a bit rough cooking and burnt fingers from not being prepared I set down for a nights sleep under a sky without stars. It bucketed down and the tent leaked so I retreated to the car. After a night of heavy downpours and distant lightning I woke up to a beautiful sunrise and the wildlife was abundant. A quick ciggy on the car listening to birds etc and time to pack up. Hmmmm where's the tent? Where did that muddy River come from? The old path I had set up camp on WAS a dry sandy riverbed. Not any more it was a tent swallowing mass of water flowing. Everything I left behind when retreating to the car was gone. Lesson learnt.

👍👍👍 A good, informative (and encouraging) share .. thanks 😊. 'Cheap Tent'. One can then upgrade to a 'cheap' tarp .. the combination thereof will see one through rougher weather conditions and give one more opportunity to further 'test the water'. As mentioned by yourself and in the comments, if not to one's liking .. then no real loss. Also, there are plenty kids out there (if not one's own) who would be more than happy 'backyard camping' with their mates. Keeps them 'off the streets', out of mischief .. mostly 😏 and close by if necessary. I personally am in favour of a good quality tarp, supplemented by a 'will do' tent when necessary .. the tent bug net being the most important bit thereof. Once again, thanks for sharing .. take care ..

I think the same budget but looking for second hand gear would be good using ebay, gumtree, Facebook market place things like that and do a comparison in the quality of the gear. Also might be worth noting that if you could borrow gear for your first couple of times, would save you money in the long run either by not buying any gear at all if you don't like it or buying gear that will get quickly replaced by better stuff.

I tried it firstly down my local country park and cooked spaghetti carbonara in my OEX bobcat 1, the 2nd time was steak on a community camp in Llandeilo with Mr wildwales and 20+ others, I've now got 4 tents, 2 OEX tents both one man, 1 naturehike cloud peak 2 and my latest buy I have the Terra nova pioneer 2. Great video buddy, its good to see you doing videos for newcomers, I'm still one of those and I still have loads to learn, I think Noone ever stops learning tbh. Looking forward to your next adventure 👍

I think if memory serves me correct my first few camp out 30 plus years ago I had some pot noodles and a packet of smash some corned beef. then progressed to burgers and bacon. With the problem of condensation in all tents I tend to use moisture absorbers they help quite a bit.

One thing I still wouldn't skimp on too much if you're just testing to see if you like camping is the sleeping bag and pillow as if some people don't get a good nights kip, they might not think camping is for them. However, you can get some great, comfy and warm sleeping bags for under £15 and pillows for a few quid. Great advice about making sure the weather is gonna be fair, especially with cheaper tents as new comers to camping shouldn't really be braving the elements too much til they've got more experience and of course better tents by then :D Great video and shows just what you CAN do, even on a budget

I watched the previous video when you bought the gear & then this one straight after......I was so looking forward to seeing you packing the tent away since you said you'd never used one yet! 😂 I got a cheap 3 man version from Decathlon 11yrs ago when he was 13 for us to use at Rock/Metal festivals as well as normal camping & it lasted 6-7yrs, no issues with it other than learning the knack of packing it away! 😂

Never eaten pot noodle camping or at home as don't really like them . When camping in group used to do stews etc over firepits and when by myself used little army hexi stove for canned spaghetti, soups and the burgers you mentioned
