The problem in the west is that the entire business of the bank is basically funded by interest "riba". If the loans they gave had no interest the Bank would not exist as they would have no way to make any money and would not be able to run as a business. If there was no bank then there would be no way for the majority of people to get a loan to start a business or buy a home or do anything really. Maybe the government would own all the land and the people would just have to make monthly rent payments to use it? Not really sure how it would be changed but it would be incredibly difficult to fix the system that is currently in place.

When I was a student at UC Berkeley in the 1990s, a group of Muslims gathered and bought some small acreage in a nice community of the Bay Area and built houses that Muslim families could purchase on payments without needing to take loans. In this way, Muslim families were able to purchase homes without paying riba, and wealthier families were able to help to create a Muslim community, which ensha Allah The Gracious and The Merciful will reward them for in Jannah. A beautiful Muslim win-win situation!

@roberthannah79837 күн бұрын
Good! But it doesnt work for corporations needing millions to finance, banks with thousands of clients, millions of retired people needing secure pensions, governments issuing millions in tbills, large insurance companies doing asset-liability matching. You need a modern financial system.

@@roberthannah7983 Dude, I don't know what you think you watched here, but it is about "War on Riba," so I do not understand the relevance of your comment. Otherwise, there are PLENTY of other ways of making money other than usury. Peace to the brotha!
@roberthannah79836 күн бұрын
@ Riba al jahiliyya at the time of the prophet was the exploitive redoubling of unpaid debt burdening poor debtors. Modern interest in capital markets (apart from loan sharking and predatory lending) is not riba. The Islamic finance talk you hear these days is a (well meaning) construction of scholars who get paid to give fatwas on bank sharia boards. But the idea of smaller scale cooperative efforts as you describe is fine. What puzzles me is that Islamic scholars prohibit interest and then approve deferred markups on loan amounts.

Interest is part of Riba(usury). The issue with interest is that it’s tied to inflation, meaning the value of your money decreases even if the nominal amount remains the same. For example, if inflation is 1.6%, you lose that percentage of your money’s purchasing power. This is why, during periods of high inflation, interest rates also rise-to discourage excessive borrowing. Now, imagine facing both high interest rates and high inflation simultaneously-it’s a difficult situation. To address these challenges realistically, it would be beneficial for muftis to collaborate with economic experts to develop practical, testable solutions rather than focusing solely on symbolic interpretations. It’s also important to understand the context of riba (usury) at the time it was prohibited and explore how it applies in modern economies, where millions of people live in densely populated cities with complex financial systems. This understanding can help create frameworks that are both ethical and practical for today’s realities.
