Aluminum aloys used in phones are pretty ductile, especially compared to brittle glass. So they get dents when you drop them, but they don't shatter like glass. I personally take care of my phone and prefer the feel of a glass back so I'll gladly take the risk, but I dislike this marketing scam.

Finally someone does a drop test. Ordered the 8/128 midnight black :-) THANK YOU!! Jun 4th Edit: been using my new OP6 for about a week. Very impressed with it. Switched from Nexus 6p. Still getting used to volume buttons on left side, and on swiping down to answer a call. What a great screen. Battery lasts an entire 18 hour day of hard work. Slider button is SO handy. Can't recommend the phone enough. I did install pixel launcher because I love the feel from my Nexus. Manual "pro" mode in camera was a very pleasant surprise.

What I meant is that no matter how strong glass may be, it will shatter if it is dropped. Thus, glass is not a good material to use on back of the phones. Most of the time this durable glass is just a gimmick.

I just watched another drop test of the 6t and it survived every drop onto a tile floor until a drop from 6 feet high. It goes to show that it's all in how the phone hits the ground.

Naked OnePlus phones have always been too fragile in my eye. My 3T is in a Spiegen Rugged Armor case and I don't have to worry about any accidental fall damage. It took a basketball while I was holding it, and at least 10 more accidental drops by now with 0 damage to the phone and barely a scratch on the case.

I've used a basic plastic case on mines for the past 1.5 years and I've dropped it quite a few times and to this date not a single crack or scratch. I agree all oneplus phones( and modern phones in general) are too fragile naked.

You clearly haven't used Samsung A5 2016 .it survived some very nasty drops and throws without any glass guard or back cover .My A5 2016 survived 5-6 drops before finally cracking. It was a very solid fone.

Aaand thank you for reminding me why I still love my metal Oneplus 3T. I've dropped it several times without the case on a variety of surfaces( tiles and wood floor) and all I got was some barely noticeable dents. Which isn't something to die for as you can find the whole metal case online for 15 bucks and your phone will look brand-spanking-new. So I kinda feel Oneplus should have continued to follow their mantra and produce durable devices, but I guess they saw that if people keep one device for 2-3 years, their profit will plummet down. Thanks for being neutral, Matthew! Many of your fellow KZbinrs seem to forget where they started from and became nothing but advertising channels. I'm sick of this Fortnite game, everyone somehow mentions that one every time...

The thing I hate about glass is cases don't really protect it much if at all. It's the shock vibration that gets it, not as much the force of the impact.

The oneplus 6 is built like any flagship smartphone made of glass. Depending on the fall and angle it hits the ground will determine if it gets damaged or not. These drop tests don’t prove much except highlight the need to add a case to your device. Even phones with metal backs have glass screens and should be protected likewise. Gorilla glass is touch but not against concrete. I’m sure you knew this though! 😄
