"The commute was fun." Yup. I'm 53 and I truly enjoy my Onewheel. I have been hurt a few times, bad bruises on my legs and hips, small fracture in my wrist and a cracked helmet. So, I still enjoy it. But also built a bit of respect and am more aware of risk. I wish I was an owl, to be able to swivel my head around more!

🦉 I like that the sideways stance gives you a the ability to look back and forward. It’s much more uncomfortable for those on bikes and scooters to look back.

Thanks for putting the time into making these, Don! I am part of a different DC community (for my brand and model of car) but I've thought a lot about switching to a OneWheel now that I have a closer job (1.5 miles compared to 60+ miles for my old job). Your attitude towards other road and dedicated lane users is VERY empathetic for this area.

Pint with Quart battery, Pint X and a stock XR. I've never experienced tail drop over speed bumps.....but I also coil my body like on a BMX bike at the pump tracks. 🤷♂️ I haven't experienced alot of the issues others have. Mine have been mostly carving too hard issues. Only nose doves ive ever had were when i would try to get out the way of a car that doesnt see me in crosswalk and i give it too much.
@followdon9 ай бұрын
You can definitely overcome most of the board’s limitations with technique. I feel like the tail drop was a GT-related behavior. People didn’t complain about it on any of the boards you mentioned.

man, i got pushed out of a bike lane by a reckless driver at 25mph , and took a really hard spill, head-on, into a curb. i sent in a diagnostic report and FM said everything is straight, but I have a big mental block keeping me from hitting those top speeds again. :(
@user-vy7db9tv3k10 ай бұрын
If you wanna keep riding street you need to think like a motorcyclist and pre-empt this sort of thing. Not saying you’re in the wrong, but that doesn’t matter much if you eat shit. You were going too fast for the scenario 😊. Internalise that and you’ll get your mojo back
@followdon9 ай бұрын
Yikes! A hard fall can shake your confidence for sure. One thing I learned from @OnewheelWing is that better safety gear can help your confidence. He would ride fast but with a motorcycle helmet. I'd add a padded jacket and pants if you want to push higher speeds.

There are lots of group rides in DC. You’ll often find Onewheel riders with DC Bike Party, and sometimes, we’ll join DC ESK8 rides or make ad hoc plans on Telegram. I haven’t been on one lately, but I’ll likely check something out when it’s warmer.

Just try to GTS on some trails for the first time yesterday I wish I had never tried it because now I want one lol. I totally understand why people riding GT sell them to get a GTS and give up the range for that power it’s addictive. I hear 84V Vesc builds are just as powerful as GTS so want to try that next 🤙 then decide what my next board will be.
@followdonАй бұрын
Yeah. The power is in a different class for sure. I did try a GTV conversion and it had incredible stability at high speeds. But that was based on 75v.
@deltax7159Ай бұрын
@ compared to GTS would u say it’s comparable??
@followdonАй бұрын
@deltax7159 it’s close to GT S power without spending a ton of extra money. You have to get the tune dialed the way you want, but you have the flexibility to change everything about how the board rides.
@deltax7159Ай бұрын
@ can you imagine what dropping a vesc controller into a GTS would do then?! 🌶️🤙
@followdonАй бұрын
@deltax7159 I can imagine it would unlock the next level of performance, but I imagine someone from the community would have already done and posted about it if it was worthwhile.

@followdon5 ай бұрын
Yes. It’s definitely fun. And they’re getting pricier on the high end. The Pint X feels like a good deal these days. Still a fun board, but the GT S is on another level. For me, scooters and motorcycles are tougher to maintain and keep safe in the city. For Onewheel, I can just take it inside with me to bars and other establishments. Same when I get home. I can just park it inside my 3rd floor apartment. I don’t have an elevator in my building, so scooters and EUCs would also be less convenient to carry upstairs to my place. Onewheel is just a sweet spot for me.

I have a Pint x and plan to get a GT-S in a couple months. Question-I hear you getting the buzz at 25, when do you get pushback? How much separation between them?
@followdon7 ай бұрын
The first thing I’ll say is that the extra 5 miles per hour above the GT feels significant. Pushback begins at 24.9, it seems. It’s subtle. Haptic Buzz hits at 25, and the nose feels a little softer at that speed, so I tend not to push it further. 25 on Onewheel is fast enough to feel unresponsible.
@TheSakufighter6 ай бұрын
Your shoes scare me 🫣 You don’t prefer flat sole shoes/more contact with the board?

At this point, I can wear almost anything, but it’s nice to have more contact to receive more feedback from the board.

@12:38 So I have the GT and had to install the surestart because when I would slow down like what you did at the intersection my GT would stop when going slow. Does this happen to the GTS?
@followdon6 ай бұрын
The footpad technology is the same, so you’d experience the same on the GT S. You may need to be more conscious of distributing weight on your front footpad to counteract that. Also, in Custom Shaping, you can try Single Zone Activation and max out Jump Reengagement Time to give you more time to adjust your front foot on the sensor.

Crazy thing just happened on my day 2 GT-S I picked up during the BF sale. Luckily, the board was stopped before it died. I basically stopped and then when I tried to mount onto the board, it wouldn't engage the self balancing motor. I tried a few times and then decided to turn the power off. Then it wouldn't turn on at all. Walked home and the charger does nothing either. Totally bricked! I'm going to reach out to FM today, but now I'm concerned if this happens during high speeds? I'm now seeing many videos complaining about the same issues. Any advice or thoughts on this?
@followdonАй бұрын
When you plug into power does the light come on for the charger brick? Did it get wet at all? The one complaint many have for Future Motion boards is the lack of diagnostic data visible to riders. But it’s best that you reach out to them for next steps.
@MrKingJavoАй бұрын
@@followdon The light on the charger turns on, but the OW doesn't light up at all. As far as wet, the ground was a little damp and I road over a small, I mean super small, little bit of water. But that's about it. I see online that many people are having this issue with the GTS and now I'm wondering if I should ride at all or get a more reliable board if I continue? Ugh!
@followdonАй бұрын
@MrKingJavo it’s easy to find others who have matching problems online. I’m sorry you have to deal with it, but definitely reach out to FM and have them straighten it out. I’m daily driving my GT S-Series, and I’m careful with water stuff. Still damp ground shouldn’t kill it.
@MrKingJavoАй бұрын
@ I’m wondering about vesc or another board that might be more reliable. Seems like the high voltage on the GTS has more failure because of the underpowered MOFSETS?
@followdonАй бұрын
@MrKingJavo I have almost 3,000 miles clocked on mine, but it did get water damage once. Hard to say what would be most reliable. Are you planning to be a commuter or will you be riding mainly for fun?

I'd love to try a GT-S. No one in our group has one. But our group rides are long and the GT riders can sometimes be the weak link in range(lowest range boards on some rides vs the CBXRs and ADVs), so the low range/longer charging time of the GTS isn't ideal. I'm not even sure the GTS could ride me to work and back home without having to charge. Well no matter to me anyway, I'm glad people like it. I'm all in on the ADV, I would still like to try a GT-S one day.
@followdon9 ай бұрын
I’m on the other side in that I’ve never tried the ADV and I’d like to. As far as riding to work goes, I used to commute on a Pint and I’d keep a charger at the office. The board would be topped off by the time I was headed home.
