I got into game dev because I was tired of seeing devs giving up on turn based combat so I'm really happy to see there's more people like me who go out of their way to make their own turn based rpg. I don't do devlogs cause I don't have enough free time and I'm way too introverted to start a youtube career but I have some videos of the game I'm working on on my channel if you're interested.

This is looking amazing! It motivates me to make my games as well, also love that fact you shout out other devLogs. I'm not one with Turn base RPGS, but honestly would love to give that a go when it's out!

So far its looking really awesome! That brick dungeon is giving Dragon Quest 11 vibes.

Love to watch some devlogs. Great work so far. Here some thoughts that might help with level design. So f.e on the path in the forest, there could be fallen down trees with some moss on it and adding bushes to fill in empty spaces rather than just leave it at terrain. That would add some details to it and also make it a not too straight forward path. In regards of the second big city part where you struggled. I think you can make it work, it may just need some more details. The big circle place with the fountain could have a patterned floor like a plaza. The long street could be a marketplace so stores or even guilds on the left and right with signs, around the water parts there could be rectangle flower pots, place some resources so it shows some references to what a store does. On the backside of the stores there could be a balcony or platform to emphasize on the view. The part of the cave dungeon with vines on wall, I would place more vines than just one to make use of that broad width of the wall and just have one long vine so the player can identify that's the part to climb, I assume. I see you added a waterfall in the cave in which you can see the outside through, give that detail by adding light coming into the cave in that area. The bridge in the cave could have some torches, I think the citizens of the city would build a bridge in a cave with light. The cave itself is lighten up yet there are no light sources for it so maybe that is something you would like to add. Just some thoughts I wanted to share. Keep up the great work!

The game looks good , great work so far, but one feedback I would give you is keep in mind game performance when making those big levels with a log of grass and stones, you may not notice it if you have a powerful developer PC but most of people does not, if the game have bad performance it will push back a lot of potential audiences, keeping performance optimization to the end will result to refactoring a lot of levels that you already spend a lot of time on theme and will make you trade a lot of visuals for the performance.
@peakakupo Жыл бұрын
really amazing seeing the quality of your work. I enjoyed this dev log. Something that you mentioned regarding the tactical point system you are unsure off. I was thinking maybe that should be similar to the trace system of FF9. Since your game is based on the effect of elements, you can have it where if the meter fills up the character gets a boots on his elemental damage attack for 2 or 3 turns. That way the system becomes a great asset for boss battles or tight situations.

Thanks. Yeah, that is a neat idea.

Catching up so forgive me if I'm commenting on an issue you potentially solved since then. But, regarding zone scales, I think it might make your life easier if you dropped an actor mesh in your map and then move it every time you make a new "room" to give you a scale reference so that you don't go too big. That aside, looks really neat! Keep up the good work :D

I'm currently also working on a project where i would need an overview level and some detailed location levels. May i ask how you build the overview one? Did you just scaled the texture UVs in the materials and also the assets (Trees, bushes and so on) down? Great video and project🔥
@CaiusNelson Жыл бұрын
If by overview you mean overworld, yeah that's more or less what I did. Static meshes just got scaled down.

This was awesome and inspiring! I hope you keep releasing these devlogs. Is the character actor and white dotted actors where you transition levels a certain tool or is that just what works for you visually? I like it.
@CaiusNelson Жыл бұрын
Thanks very much! The character mesh is in the editor only, as a way of indicating where the player will spawn. The dots are visible in-game, as they are an indicator that you are about to leave that area.

I love the backgroudn art style and how everything just feels coherent. Did you make/paint the background elements yourself?
@CaiusNelson Жыл бұрын
Not quite. Essentially everything in the environments is from the marketplace, though I've heavily customized many of the shaders and textures, as well as edited some of the meshes.

I've been playing a lot of sons of the forest and I noticed that the game was really empty. Even though having a nice open world map with lots to see is cool, if there isn't enough varied gameplay and rewards it can feel boring. Btw I love the modular dungeon ideas you have. Did you model it all yourself?

@Escape The Matrix you're capitalizing way to much on the Andrew Tate aspect makes it feel... like its false advertisement. if you want i could make a game art for the front page that might draw people to what you're actually making?
