As an improv performer myself, I can confirm that we only teach you how to be funny and we’re braver than any warfighter that ever existed. But in all seriousness, any improv class that teaches you to be funny first and foremost misses the point of it: it’s supposed to teach you how to be more fluid and spontaneous in conversations on the fly. It also usually works better with people you know and gel with. Being funny is more a byproduct of it if you happen to be doing short form stuff like Whose Line, but even that requires other skills that aren’t improv adjacent. Being funny should NEVER be the focus of the class. I say this as someone who knows that those “improv is comedy only” classes exist and they’re as pretentious as they sound.
