May god protect Salman from further attacks. This poor man lost an eye and use of one hand recently for his views and his writing, but he is patient and more scholarly than most. I’ve tried reading the Koran many times, but it confuses me. I do appreciate passionate people who support the Koran and I don’t fault anybody who holds an interest in the Abrahamic faiths, especially being a gnostic Christian myself. I wish people the best of luck as they indulge in the Abrahamic faiths.

Also, he failed to mention the unprecedented ability of people, both Arab and non Arab to be able to recite it in its entirety, from cover to cover. Why do people not know enough of recent history? especially in the west. Before the US and it's allies obliterated Iraq, Syria, Libya, Egypt, and continuous destabilizing of Pakistan and sanctions on Iran believe it or not doesn't make a difference they were all progressive and developed socities. The portrayal of Sadam as a mad dictator, or Ghadafi, Bashar Al Asad, Mubarak, Khumeni etc..... is only because these countries were not in line with the west expansionist policies of the new world dominance, basically to control the supply route of oil and to keep the Petro dollar as the only currency for world oil trade. This obviously would allow the US to continue it's global dominance and killing rampage. Read the head ex CIA Michael Scheuer's public statements who was in charge in the crucial years of the systematic destruction of the Islamic civilizations. CIA operate if you are not aware in a sequential process. First they will try to negotiate with the head of state and bend their will to allow US policies to be adopted, if not successful they will create an uprising within the country against their leader via third party fronts that supply the financing to rouge fringe elements present within the country as well as implanted to allow for control. That was the rise of the Arab spring, next if that is unsuccessful they will declare war by calling it an 'operation' just so the majority of the Western and the sheep populas of the world are neutralized by not calling it a war to occupy the independent country. At the same time contracts are given to agencies and to mercenaries to assassinate the target. The system is inherently designed to keep the common working people go about their day, keep their heads buried in the daily constraints of life, so they don't have time to use their intellect. The media is as everyone knows by now push out the rest of the false narratives and thereby keep the world in a state of hypnosis like zombies. This type of control drives nuclear families apart as well, both man and woman must work overtime to pay mortgage, taxes, bills, government service fees... Just to turn another day. Few of the intellectuals in the west knew about realities and we're expats most often in Syria, Iraq, Libya due to this. They would get fair compensation, next to no income or sales tax, lodging and transportation, round trip plane tickets provided by employer and good weather year round. The night life, food, culture, shopping is another thing that the west has never experienced that was part of these vibrant societies attraction. Employees had stronger protection against dismissal at will by corporations unlike in the west where the employment standards act has been amended around 1990 to hand more power to the corporations. Majority of the people are made to believe the middle East was a poor and underdeveloped area (through media) yet not shining the light on welfare states in the US, where the people on food stamps far exceed the ones holding jobs with decent wages. Ghadafi had been warning and at times blackmailing the west to keep him on their side or the tide of migrants into Europe and the US that Libya is keeping a lid on will bust open. He knew they were planning to remove him from their way. Look at the situation now, Europe and the US will see migrants infiltrate their borders. Anyway, the west would have kept people believing in this orchestrated narrative if Russia had not stepped in and exposed their agenda. Since they were being rattled for their actions in Crimea. It was payback for Putin. It's much better to know reality and not be in a bubble. You get the true prospective only if you have lived in both societies. How can you know if majority of the Western world especially the Americans have not even traveled out of their towns in their lifetime and made to believe they have it better than any other country or that they have a democracy, it's more of a hypocracy the president has no power, the Senate and the big Business lobbies control the country. Only the few at the high levels of the society know, the rest are fodder.

what Mr Salman Rushdie said is true, that is a scholarly consensus. He is well-informed. Nestorian Christianity prevailed in arabia at that time. Now the question is- who's to say that the version of the Jesus narrative that was promulgated in Arabia through Nestorians was not the correct one? It is a million dollar question if you stop and think about it one that many scholars of our time struggle to answer or just duck the question. Because to answer this you need to know how much of the canonical narrative was true and how much of the aporcrypha that were thrown out, was false?? Apocrypha is borrowed from Greek apokryptein, meaning “to hide away” or that is hidden. To be a little ironic here, what is being hidden away from the original narratives? The believer might ask, didn't the Quran scold the priests of the people of the book for hiding away the truth? Not all of the apocrypha as much as I understand it, was BS. It went through a very humane process of subjective choosing which books and stories to include and which to throw out, and I agree some apocrypha such as the gnostic books are just too exotic, mere fantasies to be added. But who is to say other apocrypha (new testament) were garbage, untrue? I have been seeking good scholarly source that answers this but there seems shockingly nothing on this. I know that the child Jesus speaking from cradle, and Mary being fed by the angel are stories found in some extra-biblical books, but these stories are sombre, decent and while miraculous, are quite in line with the tone of other prophetic stories in the NT, the Quran and the Old testament. Which makes me wonder why were these really sombre stories not included?? Simply because they could not be found in those other 4 gospels that went on to be canonized? These are some really important questions, without answering these questions it is a fool's act really, to critique any sources that refer to the extra-biblical texts.

We do not know that Muhammad derived the narrative aspect of the Qur'an from Nestorian Christians. This is a historical speculation on the part of Mr Rushdie. Some historians have suggested that Muhammad derived at least some of these narratives from Gnostic sources, such as Sethian Gnosticism (there are parallels between the Qur'anic verse about the crucifixion and certain Sethian texts).

He is right when saying quran tells very few stories and those are already well known among the mid-eastern people. but he somehow misses the point that the stories in quran are referential. quran claims the ownership of judeo-christian tradition but also claims that the peoples of moses and christ deviated a lot from the way shown to them by the prophets. The Quran is theological and polemical more than an original narrative. That doesn't make it wrong or right, but it's interesting that it's so different from other Abrahamic holy books in that regard. The Jewish and Christian Bible are much more strongly narrative driven, with theology taking a back seat. Which might be why Judaism and Christianity lend themselves to diverse interpretations.

Historians like Tom Holland who look at Islam in a real historical context, as Rushdie describes, actually say that Islam was not born in the full light of history. One of the major parts of Holland's work is to show that Islam probably wasn't born of Mohammad, but attributed to him at a later date by a warlord who did invent it. The earliest evidence we have of any reference to"Muslims" rather than simply "Arabs" is considerably later than the Arab conquests. This would suggest a later effort to unite the growing Arab empire under Islam, much like what the Romans did with Christianity but on a smaller scale.

fofr the narrative side of the Quran I get his point. But for the whole Quran his argument that looking at the Quran as an event inside history cant hold its ground. Otherwise many chapters could not have been revealed how they have been. F. e. when the prophets wife was seen with a nother man riding a camel, the people of the town backbited about her, which the Prophet reacted to. For this reason God revealed to the prohpet about the backbiting and it's fault. Or when the Prophet overlooked a poor mans desire to hear about islam, when the prophet instead rushed for the influential people in the city, god immediately gave him a revelation. At least thats the muslim traditions standpoint, which oh course is not part of a scientifc historian approach i guess?

The account of Jesus's birth is one true account, now it couldn't be different in two books of God himself, could it? He his true that this account is similar if not same in the Quran and Old Testament but it was so because it's one account that happened. In Islam, there are four books of God out of which the Bible and the Quran are two. The Bible was believed to be altered by men with their own narrations, and since it wasn't pure anynore so it was rejected to be a guide for mankind. There on, the Quran was descended.

That's my problem with the narrative in the Quran God sent the Torah to Moses and it got hopelessly corrupted, before that God sent the Writings to Abraham and they got corrupted, God eventually sent the Zabuur to David and they got corrupted, than God sent the Injil to Jesus and that got corrupted. I'm already skeptical to trust the Quran because the god of Islam failed to protect and preserve 4 books by the time he gets to the Quran. Than I read the Quran and I read Surah 15 verse 91 and find out the Quran was being torn up while it was being written and the Hadiths say that Uthman burned several Qurans he thought had the wrong words. So certain Quran verses are legit lost to history.

And there is NO historical record of Mohammed - which is odd, if he was such an important guy. No, it was ALL made up later. One of the compilers of the hadith recorded that he sifted through 660,00 Hadiths to find 1000 or so that he could call authentic. Now, tell me this was the work of God.....They must have had a competition, to write as many hadiths as possible.
