I am from Indonesia, country with the largest Muslim population. But we are not a "sharia" country 😊 We even have a region where Muslim still do not consume meat of a cow because historically the Hindu minorities of that region didn't eat cow for their religious purpose, and the Muslim scholars of that time advised local people to refrain from eating cow as a form of respect to the Hindu minorities, even though it is not actually forbidden for Muslims to eat cow. There are many stories like this. But the world don't hear it, because the media delivers to public what is sensational, and Kindness is not sensational news.

The problem with Islam isn't just the history that was marked by blood from day one. The biggest problem with Islam is that no one have authority to decide what is the right interpretation of verses. Many Muslims will defend stoning of an adulter based on the the prophet's teaching. Few will disagree. And that goes almost on anything in that relegion. You can have 50 Islamic sheikh giving you 500 different interpretation of the verses . The Quran is also very contradictory Look for example to what Quran teaches about Christians . Parts it describes them as followers of the truth Ahl Al Ketab Then later it describes them as Kufar that need to be fought. Muslims like to take advantage of this Quranic circuses in their relegion to defend Islam. Until ISIS came and adopted The most basic interpretation of Islam

Because they are protected and the indigenous people of the West are now second class citizens. The aim is to dilute down the indigenous culture/Christians by the cabal so they weaken down Christians and Caucasian culture. They want us pre dominantly a mixed race. Encouraging another religion in particular to take over. All part of a planned agenda and we know it's real because certain areas of the country have more ethnics than white Caucasians now. I also notice that supermarkets virtually give food away with very low reduction on food where there are mostly ethnics and areas mainly of white Caucasians get a measley 10 or 20% reduction. I was shocked when my friends who are Asian was telling me about the big reductions they get in their area. It's so wrong! Good luck to them but the agenda is becoming clearer by the day.

Would have been easier if your religion hadn't made verses easy to interpret/misinterpret as justification for retaliatory violence: "And when the forbidden months have passed, kill the idolaters wherever you find them and take them prisoners, and beleaguer them, and lie in wait for them at every place of ambush. But if they repent and observe Prayer and pay the Zakat, then leave their way free. Surely, Allah is Most Forgiving, Merciful."

@@AnonYmous-bc5xk would have been easier if you understand the historical factor behind those verses. All holy books have war and violent related verses, you need to know the story behind them. Let me shed some light on this, this verse did not come at the begening of Islam, it came later, if you actually look at how the message started, Mohammed propegated his message amongst the pagans in Mecca, he had few people (few 10s) following him, they were getting tortured, executed and exiled and as his followers grew, Mohammes fled with them outside Mecca and went to Madina, the pagan Meccans still didnt like it, yes beleive it or not those verses of fighting and fiercely pushing back is a reaction to earlier attacks and multiple executions. Yup, those wars that followed Mohammed's life on Spain and india were lead by monarchs came after him in 10s of years..

@@AnonYmous-bc5xk is that because Islam is the only one to have verses like this? How about this one from the Old Testament If your own full brother, or your son or daughter, or your beloved wife, or you intimate friend, entices you secretly to serve other gods, whom you and your fathers have not known, gods of any other nations, near at hand or far away, from one end of the earth to the other: do not yield to him or listen to him, nor look with pity upon him, to spare or shield him, but kill him. Your hand shall be the first raised to slay him; the rest of the people shall join in with you. You shall stone him to death, because he sought to lead you astray from the Lord, your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, that place of slavery. And all Israel, hearing of this, shall fear and never do such evil as this in your midst.” (Deuteronomy 13:7-12 NAB) Every single religion contains things which are outdated and clearly absurd. That is why 92% of so called hon or killings are by members of the same cult. That is why the most supreme leader of shia islam could issue a fatwa demanding this be done to a writer of fiction in another country. This is why Asia Bibi was sentenced to death. it amazes me when people say it has nothing to do with the religion Islam without asking why Muslims do go on attack and violence when their religion is criticized. Minimum the author was Muslim who is considered as an apostate who kind of insulted Islam. The penality in Islam for him is death and that is in the instruction given to Muslims by their prophet. There are verses in the Quran and Hadith that actually promote violence against nonbelievers. Yes most Muslims are good but people are generally good where ever you go. They are good despite what their religion actually says because they don't know that their religion promotes violence or they ignore it or such acts of violence are applicable only when Muslims are powerful and can dominate.

This is important intro to know; Quran was revealed in chapters and verses, it's God telling muhammad a story of previous prophet as a lesson, and it's God giving orders and teaching Muhammad what to preach. During war time we had violent verses. kzbin.info/aero/PLBx_RCTuVkpoanKd4XMlNhdl2uZgL_2uJ During peace time we had peaceful verses, during preaching time he was given preaching verses, or when people asked him questions, Allah revealed answers to things no one can know at a desert. .. Maybe it's a difficulty with cause and effect but as you said @16:45 (or something to this effect) I tended to think it was a marketing gimmick. I have the same suspicion about the shooting at the Rush set Maybe it's just the sheer flood of books and ideas out there that at 72, I'm a little overwhelmed and find it difficult to get the right focus on so many influences. I'm not blaming Rushdie for the attack on himself. There's a line in the Gospels where Jesus says "be happy when you are persecuted". Maybe because it means someone is paying attention to you? I'm tending to think the world IS the mind of God thinking about everything it can all the time. But it gets confusing. BTW - very nice synopsis. I was going to do a longer search but you really hit the spot somehow. Dave Chapel probably never cleaned a public restroom in his life because you really can't do what some of his jokes said. I'm gay and didn't find them very funny because they weren't at all plausible. And I have a problem remembering the modern terms for the old situation of gender identity. It took me decades to become more accepting of being a "Poof" and then they got complicated again.

I haven't read Salman Rushdie's book, but I have read Jonathan Swift's work extensively, and in detail. He wrote many things apart from 'Gulliver's Travels' (which is a general satire upon humanity) - but the most powerful piece he ever wrote - and had to publish anonymously for fear of being accused of treason and 'sedition' (for which he could have been hanged) - was 'A Modest Proposal', in which the persona whom he adopts puts forward the idea that the best way for the Irish peasantry to better their lives in the Eighteenth Century would be to eat their own children. That work of his is the most forceful, brilliant, and most justified satire I have ever read - and I suspect the 'The Satanic Verses' can be seen as following in the same strain - i.e. it's in the same satiric genre. So I would disagree with you that 'The Satanic Verses' is 'merely' a work of 'fiction'. I suspect that it is a brilliant satire against extreme fundamentalist ideology - ideology which is ALWAYS flawed, and never justified as a basis for living one's life. Christopher Hitchens also voiced on several occasions a similar opinion about the questionable 'authenticity' of the Koran - but it was cancer that killed him, not a fundamentalist Islamic zealot - who wouldn't understand (and his ignorance is very dangerous) the literary notion and 'secular sanctity' of satire anyway. He probably wouldn't be aware of 'literature' at all - the only book in his life a cobbled-together mish-mash of Old Testament and other dodgy texts claiming to be the sacred WORD.

well written, a bit lenghty and it is required as everyone views with a bias. I am also a fan of Swift, but did not hear about this book. Let me read it. There is quite a lot more to it than that. Rushdie's main point was to question the legitimacy of the Koran itself. His fictional book The Satanic Verses is named and based on the satanic verses of the Koran. These verses are in early additions of the Koran but were later removed. They are problematic because they show that Mahound (Mohammed) adapted the text as he changed his mind due to circumstance. The text is a pretty clear indication that it was written by a man with an agenda and not channeled direct from God. The reason some Muslims are touchy about Rushdie's novel is because it calls into question the popular belief of the Quran being pure and absolute in its authenticity. Rushdie is a brave man for addressing this major issue.

I remember when the fatwa was issued by the ayatollah. I also remember my good friend who worked at a book store saying "there's no need to take the book off the shelves" in order to avoid protests or violence, because it immediately sold out. The ayatollah's reaction did more to publicize the book and create demand for it than if he had said nothing. Alas, Islam hasn't had a reformation like the Christian or Hebrew faith...yet? (There's still a modicum of faith left in This athiest, apparently.)
@vlastimil-furst
@vlastimil-furst 8 ай бұрын
Reformation sounds like something beautiful. In case of Christianity, it was about undoing the changes of power structures to make Christianity a better tool for the powerful ones. That also explains why the reformation was bloody: Vatican wasn't willing to cede its power and the kings and lords trying to get out of its sphere of power often converted to reformed Christianity for more practical rather than religious reasons. But if you reform Islam, what can you expect? There is Quran, Sīra and Hadiths. With a lot of verses hostile or straight out murderous towards us infidels (kafir). If you reform that, you can expect something like ISIL (Daesh) killing the kafir, you can expect military expansion, slave trade, genocides of the Hebrew, Christian ethnicities like Armenians, or various syncretic religious communities like Yezidis. I wouldn't call for them to reform, I'd rather call for them to read the book this video was about, denounce Muhammad as a false prophet, and maybe convert to Christianity. That being said, for each individual, this is an immense risk: Their own family will want to kill them to protect their "honor".

Even though I am not religious I am fascinated by different religions. Many religions recount historical events and many say that fantasy actually played a role as well way back then when religious matters were described. A lot of ancient people also had beliefs that reached into very different areas than religion and then mixed those beliefs with a certain religion. When you study certain people from this earth many have incorporated their own ancient beliefs with the religion that was then later on introduced into their countries and then end up following a mixture of beliefs. Great video, thanks for explaining the Satanic verses and agree about religion controlling masses..and one thing from my childhood which came up when was what it it was the rhyme... "Sticks and Stones may brake my bones but names will never hurt me" Think that's the point. Words written or verbal may be offensive but if we want to be civilised we shouldn't resort to violence. in a perfect world they wouldn't but it's easier said than done and that is utopia and we are all animals also one last point about Satanic verses being a "fictional" book my point would be isn't all religion all about "stories" of recollections?? so isn't it all fictional or is that getting too deep?

It is not simple case of offending a person, but a culture of millions which has evolved from that book. There is history of crusade against Islamic culture, which has hardened attitudes and created a siege mentality, of the world being antagonist to them. Change, if that's Rushdie's purpose, cannot come from offending the sensibilities of millions but by making them see reason. It is easy to criticise without understanding the background under which feudal ideas took roots in Iran. A fact is that an elected Mossadeh government in the early 1950s was deposed by CIA murdering by him and installing in his place a vassal, Shah of Iran, as care taker of Iranian oil assets over which American companies had complete control and investments in which these companies capitalized over several decades, sharing virtually nothing with the Iranian people themselves. Mossadeh, after his elections wanted to restore what belonged to Iranians to Iranians. For this he was murdered. With this the life of flowering economy and emerging liberal society was cut short for vested commercial interests of a handful of American companies and their investors. Shah, a comprador, who was brought in was not only authoritarian but cruel - a sort who would brook no protests as he ran the country with iron hand. In this atmosphere religion was the only source to unite around to throw out Shah and with him the Americans. Inevitably, in absence of any progressive options, people united around the Iranian clerics in order to break loose from American neo colonialism grip over that country, through it's most cruel monarchy. This ended any chance of liberal cultural transformation of Iran which had begun in short lived democracy. The history of Afghanistan is similar. But the history of greatest treachery is to be found in how the British and the French betrayed the panarabic independence leaders during ww1, who were seeking independence from the ottomans. Instead of helping them achive this independence in return for their help against the turks, these powers were busy signing treaties behind their back on dividing these lands into areas of their interests. After the war, these powers broke up the Arab lands into small kingdoms and emirates, installing the feudal lords who would allow them the exploitation and control of the common wealth of all Arabs, for their own self. Such has been the history of the west in promoting feudalism and while suppressing liberal culture from emerging. This brings us to Rushdie. Frankly, I have not read him, but his statements that the writer must have freedom to even offend doesn't appeal to me. If his aim is to reform, no body has ever been reformed by offending deeply inbuilt beliefs. Change can only come through creating objective conditions for change. But if Rushdie wrote it to establish his liberal credentials in a country which prides in its liberal culture and which he has made it his home, it is even worse. Unfortunately, the liberalism by which the western governments swear and project themselves as upholder of these values have no serious commitment to these same values. Liberalism is just a fascade behind which they have committed the worst crimes against millions. They used this Lofty principle expediency to deceive and ferment troubles in other countries, for their own ends. This has been reflected in the wreckage of failed states they have left behind, messing up lives of ordinary people, all for serving their own narrow interests. Liberal values can only proliferate when people themselves feel the need for it. It cannot be imposed by outside, by big powers whose intentions are a suspect. Rushdie, if at all has failed to grasp this aspect. If barbarism is to be rooted out, it requires good will not faux liberalism, hiding behind it the treacherous intentions.

Well, that's an oversimplification of how the KJV was influenced by the biases of its translators, most of which was unconscious on their part, only occasionally rising to something approaching consciousness (like how ecclessia or "assembly" is translated as "Church"). The truth is that every religion reflects the culture it comes from, to some extent. If they didn't, they would have no followers. That doesn't mean the religions are worthless, it just means that religious fundamentalism misrepresents what religion actually is.

In the Quran, there is a section where Muhammad thinks he is receiving revelations from Allah, but is actually being deceived by satan, but only realises after he is told about it. In other words he couldn’t tell the difference. Hence they are named as they are, and Muslims don’t like any negative connotations aimed at the Quran, or Muhammad. If people not of the Muslim faith, would read the Quran, and the four trusted Hadiths, sahih Bukhari, sahih Muslim, sunan al-sughra, and sunan Abu Dawood, and read sharia law, they will see that the young man, who stabbed Salman Rushdie was just being a good Muslim. It is not a religion of peace. Stay away from Islam.
