For 20 years I though oni and genma were two different groups of entities, with the first being the "good" and the second being the "evil", but as with a lot of aspects of buddhism, there is a lot of grey, it isnt as simple as "good and evil". This video was very educational, I hope Capcom someday reboots the franchise, because its lore is fascinating. Great video!

Yes, exactly. Much like most pagan deities, many of these Buddhist beings have a rather ambiguous alignment, but seem to serve some designated function. Glad you found it useful :)

By the way, Nobunaga’s wife, Nouhime, is Yuki’s sister. Both are daughters of Saito Dosan, which means Yuki is Oda Nobunaga’s sister-in-law. Nouhime’s genma form is Vega Donna in Onimusha 3, but she also appears as Nouhime/Kichou in Onimusha Souls. 🙂 Great job analysing the game’s lore. 😊

@@BeggyBeggBegg Indeed! But Koei Tecmo toned her down in Samurai Warriors 5 and Nioh. But yes, except there are no historical records of Yuki in real life. Likely a made up character by Capcom. 😊

That Onimusha intro and music is totally a chefs kiss I'm surprised they didn't continue this franchise for when the creator was still alive since the story was never really concluded. I consider it a masterpiece among video games like Leonardo davinci Monalisa is to art. Or what Mozart is to music.

This was really great to learn about the mythos of Onimusha, one small criticism that I have about the video is how daunting it can be to follow such THICC Japanese lore leading up to the connection with the game. It felt like alot to me personally, it felt like I had missed some things and forgot other things and then some info wasn't relevant to the game to matter a whole lot but was essential in other ways as well. If I had to describe the pacing of the video from my perspective it was like a straight line that branched off into other lines but somehow ended back at the straight-line over and over again, or it was like looking at a figure 8 with a line crossed through, or like a graph with smooth curves moving horizontal up and down with a giant line passing through its center.
@BeggyBeggBegg3 жыл бұрын
Thanks, and thanks so much for the feedback. If you think of it as a chronological journey from the oni's early conception to its modern depictions (through the lens of Onimusha), I think it stands as more cohesive. In other words, rather than strictly creating this for the sake of understanding Onimusha, I wanted more so to shed light on the creature in its entirety, and the evolution of that creature. But I really really appreciate the feedback and can see where you're coming from!!
@kokujinblack773 жыл бұрын
@@BeggyBeggBegg So you created a bestiary of sorts? Thats awesome! by the way, This video must have taken SOOO MUCH EFFORT TO MAKE.... jeeez. I mean thats alot of reading and understanding of something as fickle as religion based deities and monsters. I feel like I wanna give you a hug for all of that time you put into this video.
@BeggyBeggBegg3 жыл бұрын
:) Much appreciated. And it's not a bestiary per se (that portion of examining Onimusha's yokai and Oni is meant to be a bestiary, but not the whole project), more so a comprehensive history of WHY and HOW this creature (the oni), existing specifically as it does now, was even spawned by the Japanese consciousness. This culture is known for speaking frightening entities into existence through shared stories, folktales, and the documentation of such through art and literature. Therefore, I wanted to explore its early influences and folktales to see how the themes carry into modern depictions, as they evidently do. The abduction of beautiful women of high class, the drinking of their blood by oni overlords, using the marginalized outsider as a scapegoat for natural calamities or otherwise violent disturbances, the heavenly oni granting powers to warriors to defeat the evil oni and save the princess, it's all there in Onimusha and other media. And yes the reading and digging of various works was very dense on this one. Noriko Reider's two books, Seven Demon Stories from Medieval Japan, and ESPECIALLY Japanese Demon Lore: Oni from Ancient Times to the Present proved immensely useful. I highly recommend the latter if you are interested in knowing more!!
