I truly do not understand how this franchise is being forgotten.
@zeroattentiongaming8202 жыл бұрын
Well there hasn't been a game since the Ps2. Sad as it is, Onimusha hasn't been relevant for a very long time. Those who know never forgot, but there is a whole lot of gamers who never knew of it. Unlike the DMC HD Collection, I think Capcom really screwed up by only remastering Warlords. All 4 main games can be strongly argued to be the best entry for differing reasons but Warlords is by far the most dated to actually play. It feels older and clunkier even with the new controls. So plenty of people only got to be exposed to the most basic and dated version of this series when Capcom tried to revive it. They never got experience the sheer game changing bliss of the chain Issen which 2 introduced or the much smoother movement 3 and DOD featured with their embracing more standard controls. Warlords may have modern controls now, but it wasn't built for them like 3 and DOD were. Maybe things would've gone the same with a port of 3, but I'm certain IGN wouldn't have given the port a substantially lower score than the original version solely because it felt like a 20 year old game, which they considered enough of a "flaw" to consider the remaster worse than the original by some insane logic. Onimusha 3 is old, but it still feels smooth enough to avoid that kind of criticism. If Capcom were only going to remaster 1 game to try and revive the franchise, I think Warlords was a very bad choice, much as I love the game.

Short answer money . People are happier to pay for the 100000nth street fighter over an onimusha game
@LupineShadowOmega2 жыл бұрын
@@kimnorth7060 Not nessicarily true as there are rights issues around Takeshi Kaneshiro's likeness, never mind that Capcom can be petty when it comes to the creations of people that leave the company. Also Capcom as a company is notoriously superstitious. If something didn't work once or flops once, they aren't likely to give it another shot. And like tons of game companies, they often have the wrong take away from said failures.
@kimnorth70602 жыл бұрын
@@LupineShadowOmega that actor was only in the second game and his face never appeared again , they reverted back to Jubei. The franchise was a success - at least to my knowledge the first three games were . But probably nothing in comparison to say the resident evil series of street fighter which are less risk and higher revenue arguably
@LupineShadowOmega2 жыл бұрын
@@kimnorth7060 That is incorrect. Jubei was only in the second game. And even then Jubei's likeness is that of Yūsaku Matsuda, so not exactly solving the puzzle of likeness rights. Takeshi Kaneshiro was Samanosuke in 1&3 respectively. As for the franchise being a success, the last one was not. Onimusha Dawn of Dreams was a flop and one Capcom definitely remembers to this day. Likewise, as they've done in the past, the HD re-release of Warlords was supposed to gauge fan reactions to the idea of the series return, but like I pointed out before, Capcom takes the wrong lessons from something like that not doing particularly well. Just like they did from Darkstalkers, which the re-release did pretty well so far as anyone can tell and yet here we are with no New Darkstalkers and the cycle probably getting ready to repeat itself with Rival Schools after Akira's presence in SFV. Like I said before. They are harshly superstitious and risk averse.

Oh hell yes I LOVED Onimusha 3 as a kid. I'd never heard of the series at all at the time and had an absolutely blast. Sadly I never managed to find any other games in the series after that, so I'm absolutely thrilled to get such a comprehensive breakdown all these years later. It really sounds like they'll never revisit this series again, but we'll always have that car ride.

This series was from my childhood. I haven't messed around with it since I lost my disks on ps2. But after playing and beating 2 and remembering some of Demon siege (the 3rd one) I got warlords on ps4 and started playing yesterday. The gameplay loop was so nostalgic. And I had so much fun for 4 straight hours till I had to go to work. The only part I didn't like was the puzzle gauntlet. I beat everything, but the water puzzle got frustrating (only part of the gauntlet I hated.. Timed puzzles...So I looked it up after retrying like 4 times and not being able to skip cutscenes). I'll save this video until I beat the game and then come back. We need an Onimusha HD collection for all the ports. PC/Xbox/PlayStation, you name it.... Everyone needs a chance to play this series

I remember being so elated to be the first of the group to make it through the Dark Realm. So many good times sitting around all super toasted with everyone and going nuts on Omnimusha, or doing basement tournaments of Street Fighter Alpha 3, Marvel vs SNK, or Dead or Alive. Onimusha was just soooo much fun back then.

I think the reason why this IP, and all other IP of this kind, isn't getting the attention we gamers want (or is getting produced anymore) is because there is a stop gap at the top of these companies that control everything. Ever since the shifting to a very profit-centric mindset, the focus has become more for the bottom line than to create art. If something doesn't make "All the money" then the IP won't be mentioned at all at the table. Capcom despite having a fairly good track record of releasing games today, is very much in that mindset. Long story short: MONEY! Because at this point in time, going back and doing or continuing the Onimusha series is a lot like making a new IP. A new IP that is not assured of profit in the minds of these so-called 'heads of gaming'. Meaning the CEOs who has the final say on what to make. Monster Hunter has a lot of data backing it for profit so they poured money into it and sure enough, it made bank! Resident Evil is a very strong IP under their belt, is a no-brainer, RE4, RE5 and even RE6 continues to make money fo them....What I'm trying to say is, Onimusha and DIno Crisis is so old to them, they might as well be new IPs to them, they're not confident it would make any returns at all so they would just sit on it, perculating or something. That or anything Inafune touched is allergy or something :D

Random comment, but “ji” means “temple” in Japanese. So saying “Honnoji Temple” is kind of like saying “ATM machine” in that way. Although “-ji” is technically also part of the name of the place as well, in the same way we use harbor or street or river in English location names. Basically what I’m trying to say is it was 2 different translation teams who made 2 different choices, but both are technically correct!

As far as a sequel goes, I’d like your idea of a darker tone, but I also want the allies/gifts from O2, a lot of Oni Weapons to choose from and upgrade, and some sort of homages to previous protagonists (i.e. weapons/skins/lore). I also bought and played the remaster immediately, hoping to add my enthusiasm and money, and to show Capcom that people were still interested in the series. If we can’t get any new games, I’d be happy with a remastered collection. I’d even pay full price for it. This video was such a treat, as was your presentation. Side note I almost forgot to mention this. While certain people would have us believe the franchise has been "shelved again" it doesn't match up with what Capcom's official Onimusha Twitter has posted such as celebrating the series 20th anniversary, asking for continued fan support and also claiming that the remaster has sold at least 2 million units worldwide (though this last bit is odd because the Capcom platinum title list didn't even show the remaster on the list in any recent update). I personally believe that they just do not consider the series a priority but that we will eventually see 2, 3 and Dawn of Dreams being remastered. Also I suspect that one of the reasons why Dawn of Dreams didn't sell well is because they decided not to make it a multiplat release and delay it to have it be on PS3 and 360 similarly to Devil May Cry 4.

What an excellent review of all these games. I loved the original game and Demon Siege, and I agree that a return to horror would be amazing. Imagine RE4 Remake graphics and camera angle, and you're a young Samurai investigating murders and disappearances of your clan. Your search leads you to a rumored demon temple on an island off the coast. There you must venture into the dark forest and confront the undead warriors that went to the island searching for power and treasures, while also needing to fend off the innocents that were murdered and reanimated with demon blood; good people trapped in their own bodies, in a loop of permanent agony. As you continue to explore, you find a seemingly abandoned temple filled with traps, a seaside village with ocean creatures and other wildlife that have succumb to the demon curse. Then you find ancient caves where slave masters forced people to mine for precious metals, and also where an ancient demon gate was uncovered, driving most of the slaves and slave masters insane, and so they built an underground village to honor the demon lords. Eventually, you find a gateway that can take you to an Oni realm where you would discover the source of the demon infection, but your character's bravery, spiritual fortitude, and cunning allows him to complete the work that some of the slaves and criminals had started to try and stop the demon takeover of the island; a holy device built using blessed ores and materials. The completion of this device attracts Ancient Warrior Spirits that originally closed the gateway to the Oni Realm and they grant you power and invulnerability to the demon curse, allowing you to go into the Oni Realm, and only then do we get an idea of who was behind the violent history of the demon island (I don't know yet, this is off the cuff). That's when the action amps up, the weapons become bigger and more magical, the level design turns into a fantasy horror, the enemies become nightmarish and grotesque. Essentially 2/3rds of the game would be straight up survival horror, but the last chunk would be closer to the late game content of the original Onimusha, providing a solid contrast to the dark, terrifying, and vulnerable trek through the island and all of it's horrific history and death traps. I'd be pretty down for something like this, especially if there could be some kind of logical connection to Samanosuke and his story (or it can just be in the same universe, but happening before, during or after the events of Onimusha). Thanks for the walk down memory lane and for rekindling my love for this series. I'm gonna go beat the Onimusha remaster now.

I indeed found Dawn of Dreams too grindy, thus, I never finished it. If the series did come back, I would hope Capcom put some serious thought into it and not just look for a quick sale. That said, I almost feel like Monster Hunter is what killed this series as it kind of hits all the notes you have for the Onimusha series. It is a series I am trying to get into, but haven't dipped my toe in much. Again, great video and I hope to check out more on your channel in the future.

Now I won't blame you... it's never stated..but if you "twirl" the left stick you regenerate health twice as fast. Works in 2 and 3 with these Regen items. Obviously an amazing deep dive review of the whole series you no doubt worked very hard on!

I know about the twirl but I don't think it's something I can include if the game doesn't actually tell you at all.

@@ProperBird Can't even blame you, there are too many obscure mechanics in all four games that not a lot of people got super invested in to find. Demon Siege especially with 5 secret unlockable modes, special more powerful Issues I never managed to pull off, even all through Issen only difficulty

Onimusha was my favorite game growing it was the first ps2 game I got for Christmas. Funny thing is I just beat the remaster a few days ago. I hope this series comes back.

Don't think I don't notice you using Onimusha 2 music as the background music. That means we better get a whole series for all the Onimusha games! Glad this one finally came out. I was really looking forward to it. Edit: nevermind! This is the whole series! You already knew what I wanted before I said anything. Thank you for being so considerate.

I enjoyed Onimusha, adored the sequel & was impressed with the 3rd. Dawn of dreams (4th) drained my soul as being from Europe i only now understand why i struggled so much. Great content here, i've knocked & subbed, can I come in? 😁

I love the Onimuaha games. They're that pleasant blend between hack and slash and classic Resident Evil.

The first place I ever came across the name "Nobunaga" was a game on the Mega CD called "Robo Aleste". Minor spoilers here for the 30 year old game, but he's your Lord and you get all the way to the end of the game before finally finding out that he's basically the Devil and that you've been unknowingly wiping out the Forces of Light. That was the first game I ever played were I got to the end without knowing I was actually playing the bad guy. The next place was the Onimusha series. After that it was Devil Kings on the PS2, a hack and slash game where he plays the title character. I'm really curious how the real man would feel about how he's remembered in video games. :)

Still have Onimusha Warlords, Onimusha 2 and Onimusha 3 for the ps2. I unlocked ultimate mode on them too which is a great way to replay knowing you can destroy everything in your path with the Bishamon Sword, Rekka-Ken or Ultimate Whip. Really wish this could be turned into a netflix series or a series of movies. Could be pretty damn awesome.

Listen this game IMO is capcoms bread and butter and I was sad to find out there was no plan to remaster the rest of the games like I just know if they remade the games like they did the RE games it would do great and possibly surpass or compete with RE remake sales. I remember playing them all on ps2 back in the day and when I got bored I’d pop in GameShark or the ps2 counterpart and had so much more fun with it using cheats. I’m glad you made this video 😭 so many good memories brought back.
