When Dyeing with natural colours in order to get a bright yellow we need to pre-treat and mordant the fabric with potassium alum.
in the last video, we cooked together, caramelized onion; in this video, I teach you how to dye with the food waste of that recipe: onion skins

Your video is so helpful! Is the dye bath warm or cool when you add the fabric?
@CasaCaribe
@CasaCaribe 3 жыл бұрын
Hi kathy I'm really happy that you find my video helpful 😊 The dye bath is warm, I go from "the extraction of the colour" to the "bath" immediately so the water is still warm. If you extract the colour and you want to use it later, is better to heat the colour and let it simmer with the fabric inside. Thank you 🌿

Laura, My fabric is in the dye bath now, and the color is a lovely yellow. Have you ever experimented with red onion skins?
@CasaCaribe

@@kathylewis1187 That's great💛 I haven't experimented with red onions skins yet, I have seen that you get a brown colour without mordant and more greeny yellow with alum mordant. Thanks for the comment, I will definitely try to dye using red onion skins! 😊 If you do it, please let me know your results.

I'm a guy that likes tye-dying and have done a bunch of T-shirts for my family. They have been amazingly popular and my grandkids wear theirs all of the time (to my surprise.) This time I am using a combination of purple onion skins and brown onion skins to see what comes out. I suspect it will be more of a dusky purple than anything else but we'll see. That's the fun of tie-dye. We just experiment until we get it right. I'll see if I can send you a few photos. Thanks for your information and technique. Very helpful.

@CasaCaribe
@CasaCaribe 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Hicy, I'm happy you found my video :) It's always better to mordant the fabric so that the colour stays there for longer, but if you don't find any mordant where you live there are some options: 1 - use a dyestuff that doesn't need a mordant like onion skins, avocado skins or indigo 2- use the soy milk method to "mordant" the fabric kzbin.info/www/bejne/naOZY3eLl812eK8 3- use wool instead of cotton, protein fabric takes better natural colours, and you will get a great result on wool without the use of a mordant. 4- use Iron water as a mordant, you can create it using nails and vinegar. kzbin.info/www/bejne/g4aunHyiZ7uMas0 Hope you have a great day 🌿

great video! can I dye a linen with this process twice? say, for example, I do this process for the first time, but then the colour is too light, can i repeat the process on an already dyed piece of linen?
@CasaCaribe
@CasaCaribe Жыл бұрын
Hi Harrison, Yes, you can do the process twice, but you will need to mordant the fabric again because all the mordant that was inside the fibre already bonded with the dye inside the colour bath. the only exception if indigo ( that does not need a mordant) What dyestuff are you thinking of using? because if is onion skins, you can dye the second time witouh mordant, but the colour will be more brownish. 😊
@harrisonlong644

@CasaCaribe thanks for the reply, I made onion skin dye with mordant for linen, the colour is great but I want the colour to be even richer, so I was thinking of repeating both mordanting and dyeing again!
@CasaCaribe
@CasaCaribe Жыл бұрын
maybe you can use more onion skins, with onion skins I normally use a proportion of 100:50; 50 gr of onion skins for each 100g of fabric. but you can use 100:100 😊 Please let me know when you dye the fabric again. Have a great day!

Hi! thank you so much for you comment 💚 If you can't find potasium alum I suggest to try aluminum acetate instead. You can also try to find aluminum sulfate and create aluminium acetate with it.

Is it necessary to cook/heat the vegetables to make the dye or would soaking vegetables in a jar of water outside in the sun for 48 hours work equally as well? I have 3 jars brewing now of cabbage, beet, black beans and the water is very vibrant and rich. It's easier to use glass jars in the sun rather than pots and pans on the oven. But I wasn't sure if cooking the plant material was chemically necessary to set the dye or not. Thanks
@CasaCaribe
@CasaCaribe 8 ай бұрын
Hello 😊 Love your question. we cook/heat the vegetables to extract the dye faster. but the method you are using is valid as well. is called solar dyeing. I haven't used this technique but I know it gives fascinating results ( and is more environmental friendly)

So in this one you do not rinse the mordant out of the fabric before the dye bath?? Do you scour fabric first?
@CasaCaribe
@CasaCaribe 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Cecily, Is better to wash the fabric after mordant, to remove the excess of mordant that otherwise will bond with the dyestuff unnecessary. In this video I didn't scour the fabric because I was having a hard time finding all the materials needed ( this was film during the first lockdown in Italy 😪) I wash the fabric really well with regular soap and let it soak overnight. Thanks for the comment 💚

From just what's in the kitchen: Bring water to a boil. Add 1 tbsp salt and 1 tbsp baking soda as mordant and stir to dissolve. Add fiber or fabric and simmer in mordant bath about 1 hour. ...
@CasaCaribe
@CasaCaribe 2 жыл бұрын
Hello Judith, thank you for your advice 😉 I would not recommend using baking soda and salt as a mordant; Baking soda and salt don't act as mordant. ( they don't create a chemical bond) If you want to use things you have in your kitchen, I recommend using pomegranate skins to apply a tannin bath to the fabric, this will help the dye to attach to the cellulose fibre. 💚
@cecilybailey8606

So why did the dye with mordant come out lighter I do not understand?
@CasaCaribe
@CasaCaribe 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Cecily! That is a great question! 🤩 At the end of the video I show the difference with a non mordant fabric and a mordant fabric, as you said the mordant fabric was lighter, in fact was more yellowish that the non mordant fabric, this occurs because I used potassium alum to mordant the fabric, PA is a mordant that tends to bond with the flavonoids inside the dyestuff and flavanoid are responsable for given a yellow colour, so the fabric will dye yellow or similar, if we use another mordanting agent like Iron, we will have a fabric with a more rusty and dull colour. Hope this answer your question ☺️ thank you
