I wonder if you could talk about washing fabrics like linen, cotton, rayon, etc. I have some clothes that have shrunk by maybe 2-4 sizes and I thought I did everything right. I washed them with only cold water on a delicate cycle & dried them with low heat. Any ideas what happened? I enjoy learning about natural dyes from you!
@billynou
@billynou 3 жыл бұрын
Hmm I’m not sure but I usually wash my fibers first to pre-shrink them. I tend to hand wash and also I wouldn’t put them in a dryer... that could have something to do with it. Also, some fabrics do tighten up after washing and the. Relax again with a bit of use. Hope that helps a little and thanks for watching! ❤️❤️

Hey ... so it could be for a variety of reasons... like not cleaning the fabric properly before hand or not mordanting it evenly if you mordanted it. A great way to avoid patch disappointment is to try and incorporate a pattern onto the fiber ... like tie dye for example 🧡

This all depends on how you treat your fibers before and after dyeing. Mordanting or treating with soy milk before hand can help longevity but also gently hand washing and storing out of direct sunlight. Being open to colours changing or fading and even over dyeing is all part of the natural dye adventure 😉🌱🤍

Alum is more for protein fibers but you can use it in conjunction with tannin ☺️

Because it’s non reactive and you’ll get the purest colour ... although I don’t personally tend to find much difference in my results between the two 😊

Usually you just use the dry skins from the outside of the onions 🧅

will the dye fade after washing a few times?
@billynou
@billynou 3 жыл бұрын
Hello... it alldepends on the pre treatment and after care of your fibers. If you’ve done a thorough job or cleaning and mordanting your fibers the colours should last really well 🧅

Natural dyes are always likely to change/fade over time but I do find onion skins pretty durable 🧡

It’s not as colour fast as synthetic dyes but I have had pretty long lasting results with onion skins. You do need to treat them with love and hand wash gently with ph neutral soap to help the colours last as long as possible 😊

Could someone dye using raw onions? Perhaps using several instead of a handful of skins?
@billynou
@billynou 3 жыл бұрын
The colour is in the skins so I wouldn’t use the actual onions unless you want some super stinky fabric ... best to eat them 🧅😘

Try it on some samples first and see how that goes and even if you do “mess it up” you will still have SUCH a special memory and dress full of love and character! Good luck! 🥰

I want to dye my couch cover a caramel brown color. Do you think the red onion skin will help me achieve that? Have you ever tried mixing the red and white onion skins? If so, what color did you get? The top dyed fabric in your thumbnail is the perfect caramel color that I’d like to achieve, is that the red onion dye?
@billynou
@billynou 3 жыл бұрын
Hello 😊 so I’d definitely suggest doing some tests before you dye your whole couch cover ... the top in my thumbnail was just dyed with white onion skins ... I’d say it’s more of an orange than caramel. I tend to get pinky browns with red onion skins and if I mix them to get her just a slightly less bright orange. There are quite a lot of dyes that give yellowy colours that you could try ... maybe marigolds or fustic are some you could try also ... good luck ! 🌼🌻

Oh gosh you’re right, there is still a lot of water used with natural dyeing as with any kind of dyeing. There are ways to minimise or maximise on what you are using like reusing dye baths as much as possible and then maybe using some for watering plants etc
