Onix was such a let down as a kid. You see the anime where it’s this massive Pokémon they can literally be used as stairs and is so heavy it can tilt a ship. Then you catch one and it takes 3-4 attacks to kill something 8 levels below it. At least they look cool.

I love Onix, but I have no idea why they made it so bad. I've heard they didn't want the first boss to be too hard, but Geodude has way more attack. They also gave Cloyster sky high defense, but it has workable stats elsewhere.

That’s because Aggron can generally tank hits well. Onix only resists Normal attacks, nullifies Electric attacks, and still has a plethora of weaknesses (Steel, Fighting, Ice) so while Onix can be a physical tank it can effectively only do so with two types, has to worry about special attacks, and still isn’t that great against neutral physical attacks as well. Onix is one of the Pokémon you’d throw out when you have better tanks or have hard-hitters
@iantaakalla8180
@iantaakalla8180 2 жыл бұрын
@@zyella277 Cranidos and Rampardos also suck; Rampardos may hit hard, but it will not get one hit in without getting hit, and its best moves are horrible and reduce its HP. So yes, despite Cranidos’s stats it deserves to be on a starter gym leader. Misty is also a legitimate wall with her Starmie and that isn’t a bad Pokémon, casually or competitively, in Gen 1. Roserade is not that special then. I am proposing that it is mainly the gym leaders who are first that have the bad Pokémon that look like they’re good because of inflated stats or better moves, and the second gym leaders generally have better-performing Pokémon For example, Vivillon is the second worst of all the Quiver Dancers but it puts in some work in Viola’s gym (the worst is Frosmoth). Gumshoos and Raticate (as the first trial) are still hard hitting despite the fact that you would never use them competitively. Gossifleur is an effective tank in Milo’s gym battle but not in any competitive scene. Stoutland is good, but only with Sand Rush, and Lillipup hits hard in Black 2. Nosepass may have been presented as a wall by Roxanne, and in Emerald challenges is, but performs horribly no matter where it goes (and Probopass does not do much better), and at the time of Gen 2 Pidgeot was sort-of decent even if Falkner is the exception because his Level 9 Pidgeotto does not put up that much of an impact. Meanwhile, Scyther generally does well wherever it lands, Roserade is covered, Lenora also has a Stoutland (which is where Stoutland’s Sand Rush was most taken advantage of), Roxie has Whirlipede ( of which Scolipede can perform as a sweeper wherever it lands), Araquanid is known as a tank and a counter to Fire types looking to burn Bug types wherever it goes, and at least in early Sword/Shield Lapras was there to put up Aurora Veil whenever. The only exceptions are Grant because the fossils that aren’t Kantonian or Galarian suck, and Brawly because Hariyama did not do nicely at all.

Gen 1 was way more designed like a traditional RPG. Onix, and rock types in general, were way more blatantly designed as enemy pokémon resisting the "hit" command (normal type moves) and are supposed to be beaten with "magic" (special attacks). Onix is just the epitome, rewarding game knowledge. Onix basically never really was intended to be used by the player, hence why it is only found in like, one place and why only Bruno and Brock and like, two other hikers ever use it.

Finnaly it's here: the snek, the rock the jobber and my all time favorite rock type onyx!!!!😆 This pokemon is trully special to me, dispite being bottom tier garbadge noob fooder pokedex filler in the game proper it still holds a special place in my heart.😊 In my opinion it's one off the few true embodiments off "pokemon" in the series. You set out on your journey as a young clueless child, armed with a limited edition companion pet monster and begin your quest by catch catterpillars, pidgeons and rodents untill you meet the first boss Brook. First he brings out a boring looking peble rock faced mutant but then "it" comes out. The majestic rock snake monstrosity, that once you look at it fills you with an awe and reverence for the true scope off this wonderfull world filled with marvels and excitement just waiting for "you" to experience yourself😊 Then you meet voltorb😐 It's design is simple but in a way that makes it perfect! As a rock type it's "The" definetive rock type for me! It embodies the typing in a way geodude and his evolutions simply can't. I was so disapointed every time Brook was pulling out this magnificent beast in the anime and movies, only for it to be bodied like the jobber it allways was. I still remember that beautiful crystall onyx from that one episode wich was even more breathtaking. But it was then catched by some hobo hiker pulling a sandhrew out off it's butt😉

I want to feel like I understand that they didn't want the first Boss Monster in Pokemon to be a huge tank while also dealing respectable damage and a threat of it going first. But when Steelix came out, oh sure, it was better. But it had a LOT of the same problems as Onix. They must've been really proud of this archetype of Pokemon that don't do anything but sit around because years later they also made Bastiodon. It's easy to say "Oh defensive Pokemon just suck" and call it a day but that's simply not true. Game Freak just took a very long time to realize that overspecialization isn't something you can just throw out there. It needs to fill a role that couldn't also be done by something weaker im that role. In the same Generation that made Onix, they also made stellar defensive Pokemon like Chansey, Omaystar, Snorlax, and Zapdos. They all do an amazing job at being defensive. Heck, they wanted you to fight 2 Snorlax in-game. So in the end I think Onix just becomes this big oversight; they thought that having amazing physical defense would just be fine. Can't even blame it's typing because Golem and Rhydon exist and those two are simply amazing. If anything, *Onix* is the one that lucked out with Brock. Brock's bewildering attachment to such a weak Pokemon is almost entirely to blame for how iconic it is today.

The first is that Cloyster is Onix's archenemy and the second is that Onix is persistent. Loss after loss and it just keeps slamming it's body into things until it wins.

Recently found your channel, but have been binging the last week. Like the different take to the challenges. I enjoy playing through Gen 1 (and other gens) with Mono type teams. Doing an electric run and almost done with a Normal/Flying run right now, but have done Bug, Fighting, Ground, and Fire through RBY. I find the results of the team runs much different than solo. There's not as much XP to go around and most teams are limited on the strong STAB moves they can use. Some types have very little response to Rock types at all. Would be interesting to see in a special episode kind of way to do a mono team run. A type with only 4-5 fully evolved Pokemon seem to the most interesting in the Gen unless you can get all the important HMs between 6 of them.

It is much different with teams and having the experience all spread around. I want to do some Nuzlockes soon with teams because I miss using more than 1 Pokemon. But production on those videos just takes too much time ATM. A few things need to fall into place first.

"Whats better than 2 Onix? One Onix." ...Because Onix is so bad, having less of them is objectively better. 😆 Also, leaving the text on "You still have lots to do" on the completion of the first playthrough... Nice touch.

Just a fun fact here: Onix has 1 good move it can use in Sword and Shield, Body Press. This move uses the defense stat instead of the attack stat. This means Onix's 160 base defense is very good for once

For the pidgey's sand attack, could you use bide? I can't remember for sure, but I think bide isn't effected by accuracy drops only damage done. That would make the rival battle in Curelean City easy. Great video! Always enjoy your content.

Onix, one of the most iconic Pokémon in the entire franchise. Bane of new clueless players who don’t use any non-electric move that deals Special damage. Especially in Yellow version until the nearest Male Nidoran or Mankey learn to low kick. Insane Defense, Decent speed, Pidgey Attack power, and the HP and Special Defense stats of a half-melted Glue-stick with two 4x weaknesses that happen to be Special themed until Gen 4. A Pokémon so pathetic that Alpha versions in Legends Arceus are easy to Crush (one shot at full Health) with nearly any Special move. One of the worst Pokémon in the franchise! So good work going the distance, Scott!

Do you want a real challenge Scott? Try a Gen 1 Hardcore Nuzlocke using only your starter with minimum battles. You can choose the Pokemon you want with the randomizer but no legendaries or mythicals + you have to start with the first stage of the Pokemon line you choose + no trade evolutions + no intentional badge boost glitch. Such a video would be amazing but I think it would have several fail attempts.

That was some painful run. Onix's 45 base attack, got the best out of you. And thanks to it's 30 base special, water, ice and grass moves were a nightmare, and was sad to watch a powerful and scary looking Onix getting beaten up by Erica/Lorelei time and time again. I would have never thought that Erica would be a problem, whenever a pokemon has done thorough almost all of the major fights in the game🙁. I think that facing her after you've finished Blaine and Sabrina was the correct play.Well done! 😄 I think that you could have used fissure because of your high leveled Onix. Yeah.. I know.. but hear me out :Almost all of Lorelei's pokemon are speed tied with onix, so that should hit. And besides ,using bide and rest for the mid game could have saved time, in the long run. A pokemon with the second best defence could have done wonders with this move. I think that bide was invented to be useful for Onix in this gen. 🤔 Beside that I had a good time hoping for Onix to do that run as best as possible, and I'm glad that it got a second playthrough. ☺️Keep up the good work.

When you were comparing speed stats with Starmie I really expected some Bind strats to get through that fight - a bind into dig might be more consistent! I doubt it would stay viable through to Lorelei, but might be a way to soften up water types for the KO? Nice to see Onix getting some love though!
