I know this is an older video, but the information it provides is timeless. Thank you so much. I'm pretty new to this kind of troubleshooting and repair so I found your video to be extremely helpful.

Gotta love Onkyo's, they always were well engineered and solidly built. Great video and quick diagnosis, nice....

Your videos encorage me to do more in the electronics area, I have invested in a decent LED Desk Mount Magnifier and now I have no trouble seeing those surface mounted parts, I have become confident (with my poor sight) to take on more and more projects now. Cheers from Perth in Western Australia vk6ya

What is happening to caps when equipment is not used for long time? Does storage temperature matters? For example, I bought a new PC power supply and it was used for a maximum of a few weeks but then I replaced it with some other power supply and that first power supply I put away in empty room. That room is not heated or cooled. Power supply was sitting there for one year now. What is with caps in it now?
@The_Active_Region8 жыл бұрын
Heat can dry out caps over time even normal temp. Time stress and heat is the enemy for capacitors. Some last longer than others and some just die fast from poor circuit design.

I need to grab some of that freeze spray. I've seen several techs using it now and just seems like common sense to cut down on time while trying to diagnose.

When I replace a bad cap, I like to give it a little more overhead on the voltage side. What are your thoughts on that?
@PhuckHue28 жыл бұрын
thats what I do especially if its in the power section. if the voltage going through is 15 v I put in a 50v cap

I think the fuse has expired would it make sense to check this first then see if is getting through to the micro-controller if the chip is bad then I think it would be a good idea to replace it.
@The_Active_Region8 жыл бұрын
The fuse would be fine when the power was cycling on and off like this was. This would not fully power up but was showing signs of life. If the fuse was bad the unit would have no power at all. I would then suspect a fuse or logic issue.
@DAVIDGREGORYKERR8 жыл бұрын
No problem but I think if the ESR of the capacitor you replaced was so high that it became a resistor then it was causing a short which meant that it had dried up.

.75 cents in parts kills the unit. They don't want to build them to last or you won't buy another :)

Normally I'd agree but to be fair to this receiver it's quite an old one (early 90s I think) so for a couple of caps to dry out 25 years later is forgivable I think.

+Jason james I agree.

There are audio components that cost thousands of dollars that can be taken down by basic components. The most sophisticated craft ever built, the Space Shuttle, was taken down by an O Ring and a heat tile. It's sophistication was no guarantee that it would not fail.
