Onkyo TX-SR703 No Sound "Fix"

When my father bought this Receiver probably back in 2005, it didn't come with my mother's Revlon 1600 hair dryer. However if I have any hopes of bringing this to school, turns out i will need to bring both.
Apparently in these units, and similar Onkyo units of this era, have an issue with some of the capacitors. I don't plan on employing this temporary fix every time i want to listen to music, but it does diagnose the common problem for me and may help you as well.
When looking for information on this problem, I did not come up with any videos for this specific model, only ones similar. This may help you out as well. I will post a video should i decide to fix this. My guess is the fix is more than the whole unit is worth. For now this unit will be a boat anchor, unless I have my hair dryer with me.

heat also brings capacitors back and changes resistances. I think there are a lot of disillusioned people out there who think they are re-balling their solder joints.

I have an Onkyo NR818 and bought this about 4-5yrs ago. For the past few days it was suffering from the no sound problem, while it would still switch from one input to other on the display. After looking at a few youtube videos took a chance with my hot air gun and Walla it came back live. Probably Onkyo is suffering on dry solder issues which gets resolved by this hot gun exposure. So recommend to try it out, but be gentle and not to melt out all the solder from the board more than required.

Yes the problem reoccurs after you are done with the stereo and allow it to cool off. The issue is with one of the many capacitors in the area which I'm heating.

kuntzy23 I have a Denon AVR1611 that I bought second hand. I got similar problem at the beginning. The unit started with not sound at all sometimes. After trying everything I have found that turning some EQ parameter Off and back On again the unit started working properly. After doing this every time I used the AVR, after a couple of months the unit started to work fine. Very strange way of failure!!

@@pabloosvaldopenizzotto1098 true my onkyo tx 606 does the same . I was getting 7.1 sound now I'm left with 5.1 ..smh this happen when I added a subwoofer.

Good evening and congratulations for the video. I take this opportunity to ask you a question. I have an onkyo sv454 amplifier that has a problem. In FM radio the speakers sound good while if I put on video1,2,3 or CD and try to reproduce the audio coming from the various sources the left channel does not play, only the right works. If I put it on the radio it works perfectly. What should I check once opened? thanks and to the next video. ps: If I leave it unplugged for a few days and then mention it, both speakers work for a few minutes in every situation. What can it be? Sorry my english but i'm italian. thank you

It doesn't "fix" it - hence the quotes in the title. It makes it work temporarily. There is a capacitor that fails but heating it up brings it back to life. I have no clue where it is other than it is in the rear right area

Its the dts , you heat only the dts chip with a bulb for 3-4 minutes and it fixes for a while or just replace the Dts chip

I am not certain at what temp the solder melts, but any device that melts solder is a fire hazard. Toss the pos out and buy a better built brand.

It depends oon line input voltage and input settings on receiver. If line input have higher voltage output from some equipment then is sound louder on same scale. Another specific option on this receiver has input adjustments in dB scale and this can be adjusted for any input independent. And one more hint about volume scale... this receiver have absolute and relative scale display. Relative scale have +/- 0 and absolute have 0-100 volume scale. Mine is set to 50 absolute volume and every input is set separate, +/- dB with dB SPL meter on 1kH tone. In that configuration I have all inputs at same output dB level, no matter is it CD, DVD, TV or any other equipment in my home. eg. CD player have 2V output and Turntable have 200mV output but after change input levels on receiver all of that two have same dB level on speaker.

It is a shame that such a good brand name like onkyo makes people spend their money in such a complex AVR that depends on a big design issue that caused many problems to the users!!! People that buy an onkyo are not buying a cheap clone PC made in China, so the expected much more than this!!
