Onkyo TX-NR808 7.1 THX receiver repair a common solder fatigue issue we are doing a basic reheat to attempt to get the chip to re seat And bga reflow. A big portion of the success of this repair is being able to test to see if it's the issue and to really be able to measure the temperature accurately. Also show how to factory reset and enter engineering mode. Integra receivers also had some issues with this . .

So after 10 years of service my Onkyo TX-NR809 finally experienced the dreaded DTS chip solder symptom. Back in the day when I bought the receiver I heard about the issue and so I installed two 140mm fans on top of the receiver in a pull configuration from day one. After so many years I thought I escaped it by adding the fans but it finally gave in. The speaker icons stopped coming up and I would have to restart the unit in order to get sound. In a matter of a month it went from a restart to few minutes to about 15 mins in order to get sound. Performed this fix with flux with a paint heat gun right under 400 degrees Fahrenheit and also went overboard and added some passive aluminum coolers to every chip on the board. Turned fans around and now running in a push config. It's working like new but only time will tell (Fingers crossed). I love this receiver to death and only wish Onkyo would have cooled the chips properly. Will keep you guys updated. Catus Maximus thank you so much for sharing this video it really helped...

@@hannycurak3259 Unfortunately No, after about 3 months it started acting up again. It needed to warm up for about 20-30 mins to get sound back. Got tired of waiting and bought a Tx-Nr 6050 for $329 open box on Ebay. Have to admit I really like it considering it's bang for the buck compared to likes of Denon and Marantz. Sucks it has no pre-outs but used a Russound ADP-1.2 line lever adapter to hook up the Crown XLI 1500 for the front towers and is working really well. Really crossing my fingers this one lasts as long or longer than then the previous one but Onkyo did add a nice cooler and fan to the chip and HDMI board. Only time will tell once again...

Thanks for posting this. My Tx-nr809 lost audio a few weeks ago suddenly. I found your video and used a heat gun to apply some heat, let it cool and turned it on. Boom.. The speaker relay kicked on! I haven't hooked it back up yet and I'm know this I'd probably just a temporary fix but maybe it will give me a little more service before it totally dies. Fwiw my unit said it had just over 17k hours of use.

Perfect. My personal experience is to heat the dsp chip for approximately 1:20 min at 260 degree Celsius. I used a reflow station for approx 40 Euros. Worked fine for me and I did repair two receivers successfully. Afterwards I put a passively aluminum cooler on to the chip!

Very instructive, very useful learning!... I know this receiver IS old and entry level, but i have two identical VSX-522 units here at home (probably the canadian version of vsx-521) , one upstairs and one downstairs. The one in the living room stopped working this week (all seems ok with controls and functions, but NO audio at all coming from any speaker outputs, or headphone jack)) i tried everything to give it a factory reset (power/standby + "BAND" button), and it does not work at all. The video monitor out is working so i was able to go in MCACC mode, to be able to manually generate the calibrating tones for the individual amped channels, nothing outputs to the speaker when i push it. Only sound that comes out of there, is a thump from the SUB on power-up, which makes sense since it has it's own amp. (and maybe a grin or two coming from my mouth) I should mention, ALL HDMI inputs are functional and audio reaches the TV in HDMI=THRU mode. So i decided to bring the other unit to the bench ...: EXACT SAME RESULT So now i have TWO vsx-522 stacked, which for now , only LOOK good. Do you think these vsx units could have the same DTS dolby chip problem? Thanks for doing what you do !
@adrock0801
@adrock0801 3 жыл бұрын
The problem is, with all this "repair", you just temporary fix the problem. From my understanding, most often not the solder balls on the bottom of the chip are the problem, but the stuff contacting actually the die with this green substrate plate, which is *inside* the chip. Louis Rossmann did a good video about this I would recommend to understand the real problem. With heating it up to some amount, things might get a little bit realigned inside the chip - but only temporary. So the only real permanent fix would be to get a replacement chip (but they are not available for that "old" receivers). The root cause of the problem is the thermal stress applied to the chip because of insufficient / no cooling (not even a heatsink). Same happened to graphic chips (most often nVidia) in notebooks due to same reason. Broken by design.

I think you're right. even a small amount of heat will allow mine to function again but as soon as it is switched off and cools again, it doesn't function when switched on again
@kovrcek
@kovrcek Жыл бұрын
yeah the root-cause is definitely a thermal stress. I don't understand why are almost all receivers passively cooled. I just added a really thin and quiet active usb cooling fan to the bottom of my yamaha. The heat cumulates over time so even a little breeze can keep it running superbly for years as there is never enough stress on the transistors etc. Before when used at near max volume it would turn off almost instantly, now it can run minutes before turning off at max volume (of course that's too much it can almost destroy your hearing and damage speakers). Before it was under normal operation running very hot (like 70°C), now it's warm (I'd say max 45°C). Btw I don't have it in an enclosure just sitting on top of my desk. So yeah definitely put some passive radiators on those chips or maybe even active cooling.

Yep. MANY laptop graphics cards have died the same death, and heating the chip only ever works temporarily. Eventually, the time it will work between needing to be reheated again gets smaller and smaller til the point where heating just doesn't work at all anymore.

I have a model 707 that has the same issue. I used a heat gun and heated the chip up 5 times but I had no luck getting the speaker grid to come back on and audio back to working. The funny thing is I hear 3 relays click on as soon as I press the power button but no click from a delay relay like a normal receiver. All the audio driver transistors are getting hot but the final transistors that are mounted to the heatsink are not. Any suggestions on what else could be wrong with this receiver will be greatly appreciated. Thank You!

Another thing to try is to look for any 100uf 4V metal can caps and change those, ideally for a higher voltage rating and possibly even with a slightly higher value since the higher the voltage of the caps the more the internal series resistance is but the higher the value of the cap the lower the internal series resistance is so if your upping the voltage rating it might be an idea to up the value a bit to compensate for any lowered esr from higer value voltage. This advice is not set in stone but i did see somewhere that someone replaced the 100uf metal can caps with a much higher value and it still worked.

How long did Onkyo have this problem? What years, what models? I do have a TX SR 707 it is in my garage and last summer it would cut out until I put a heat sink on that dts chip, how ever since it is winter it will not start until I let it warm up for ten minutes or so. My older Onkyo 901 amps have been with me for 30 years no problem. I think that I do still like Onkyo but If I buy another one which ones and what years were bad? Or should I just go old school. Peavey is me ve... theater or rock and roll amps?.. do not need all of the bells and whistles. How ever since my computer or my TV is normally my source signal HDMI would be nice. Right now I am splitting my 1/8" jack from my sound card to the 707and two Onkyo 901's and three DefTech 15" powered subs I have 12 speakers and I can make it Thump, having lived and worked for a sound company in Nashville for years I do like to feel the base now and then. My long throw 12" boxes that I built are 4 ohm loads and my sony 901"s are on top so get a nice and full sound. I just find that when the 707 is maxed out it is only about a third of what every thing else will do and I really like to keep unity gain on all units or else there is no gas peddle if you want to push it. Do you have any recommendations for the future of my home entertainment system? Peace, Jim

Excellent video and tutorial. I have a Denon AVR with similar no-audio issues, from either analog (tuner, RCA cables) or any digital sources. All other functions seem to work (OSD, display, etc. onboard diagnostics all seem fine except "AUDIO PACKET DOES NOT COME FROM SOURCE." So I assume it's a similar issue to the Onkyo. Is a DAC or DSP still part of the signal flow even with analog sources? I am preparing to attempt a reflow but I'm not sure which chip is the most likely culprit. Advice on a good way to diagnose? Turn it on and see what gets hottest and start there? From what I can figure from the service flowcharts, it's either the DAC, the DSP, the input selector chip, or the volume control chip. is the Onkyo DTS chip their DSP, or their DAC? Thanks for any advice!

It's the shitty BGA designed chips that have this issue. It's a crap design to have solder balls UNDER the chip. The boards warp/cup under those chips from heat, and it pulls on and makes the solder joints go cold under there.

You may have to try again at 375 to 400 that's the temperature of the ovens run at when they make these boards so even 330 might not quite be enough to properly melt it even if you do smell some flux. The scale and breadth of this issue with Onkyo really has turn me off and the sad thing is is many Integra receivers also suffer from this issue. my fifteen-year-old Yamaha keeps Trucking along.

just to provide a data point, my unit failed right around maybe 2000 hours. (i bought in 2012, and have it RAM in 2016, and today is 2020). i just check my total usage to this very day is just under 4000 hours, so it is very possible at the time of RMA it has less than 2000 hours. so i think this may be less depend on actual hours, and more on the age of the receiver. 4 or 5 years maybe a good time for the problem to surface. still quite impressed that Onkyo picked up the bill for it. the round trip shipping of a 50 lb receiver probably cost a small fortune.

Some of these comments, lol. This was a wide spread issue across many manufacturers during some specific production years due to them all using the same garbage TI DSP chip. So before you "stick with" your brand of choice, keep in mind that Onkyo, Denon, Yamaha, Pioneer, etc. were all effected. Just like how they were also all effected by the janky ass HDMI 2.1 ports on the 2020 models.

What if the board that the chip is on is installed vertically? I won’t/can’t take out the entire board in case this fix doesn’t work for me, too much trouble. Is it still worth blowing hot air on the chip even though it would hitting it from the side in addition to other components?

Can liquid flux be used to improve reliability of the repair, or is flux only useable on the flip side of the circuit board?
@gman76utube
@gman76utube Жыл бұрын
Yes, almost certainly. But you'd have to remove the board from the receiver and squirt flux under the chip, heat it to reflow the solder, then clean with flux removal spray. If there are any high impedance pins, any remaining flux will create leakage paths. And in the industry, we use degrees Celcius, not fahrenheit. Lead free solder melts at 217C. Measuring the top of the package is fine, just know that the solder balls underneath will be at a lower temp, so heating the top to 260C is best. That's the max temp for virtually all chips when subjected to a solder reflow process. Without flux, heating it up is ok but I don't think it'll last long. If he had some cold spray, you'd likely see the problem return.

UPDATE *** Worked only for 2 weeks, tried to repair again but issue keeps coming back. Giving up, and getting another receiver, this time NOT Onkyo*** great video, used a heat gun with nozzle to heat the dsp chip for 1 ½ min. and now sound is working, also the Network actually also work it was not responding before repair. Have added a small heat sink on top of dsp to improve, but thank you very much.

Hi, Thank you for your Video! I just fixed my Integra pre-amp by doing exactly what you did here. I was going to try the "baking" method until I stumbled across your vid. I did use the infrared thermometer, and it took a while to get the chip to get to temp. My first try failed, and the speaker indicator lights did not appear. I don't think I got the chip over 300deg f because I was being cautious. I tried again, and this time I let the chip get to 306deg f. I kept it on that temp for about 10 seconds. This worked!! I know nothing about electronics, at ALL, but It didn't look hard, so I figured I have nothing to lose. That being said, can you do a follow up vid to show what other chips might need the heat sinks, before I close it up? I'M not sure which ones are chips and which ones aren't.. that's how little I know. Lol. I got a heat sink kit off Amazon, and it came with a bunch of them. Thanks again for your wonderful vid!! You just saved me a couple hundred dollars minimum!!!!!!!!!

Usually a no-sound/no output relay issue on these types of receivers IS a BGA issue. I've never found any bad caps that caused this exact issue on many units. Not saying I haven't found bad caps, but I haven't found them to cause this same issue. It was always a bad solder issue with the BGA chips.

I have an Onkyo TX-NR609 that does not power on. I unplugged it for 20 minutes and when I plug it in again it just keeps clicking every 3 seconds or so. There are no lights coming on when it clicks. Any ideas on where I can start looking for a problem? I have already checked the fuses and the big transformer has primary and secondary voltage for a brief second between clicks.

That's more complicated it sounds like it's starting up and at some point it's determining there's some kind of issue and then shuts down and cycles. look online for the factory reset button combination and try that
@cliffbird5016

Just did a factory reset on my TX-nr686 and got it working again. Pain in the backside doing factory resets cause the remote doesnt work while doing the setup so have to get down on the floor to hit the buttons on the unit. Had the unit for about a year and bought it used. have to do factory resets every couple of months cause the bloody thing keeps playing up. Usualy its no output signal to the TV i have probs with. never had probs with sound. Like today woke up turned everything on no signal to the TV from my PC. so tried the bluray player no signal but had sound from the speakers connected to the unit. Thought maybe the HDMI cable was damaged so replaced that still no go. So thought maybe the HDMI socket on the TV has a prob so double checked by testing it on another TV still no picture. 1st time it did that was a week after i bought it so took it back to the shop as it had a 6 month warrenty on it. They refused to give a refund unless they sent it off to their repair centre to see what was wrong and that would cost me more money than i paid for it and take 3 months. So took it back home and did a factory reset after looking online to see if i could find a solution and it started working again for about a month. Seems its a common problem with all AVRs no matter what make or model they r. Usualy its sound though not picture. Guessing their all made in the same factory and same parts just diff software like most TV's now. Its either a chineses factory or a turkish company called Vestel making most electronics now. I know vestel make linsar, samsung, LG and Panasonic TV's in the same factory in Turkey. The braded named company designes them and the specs. then vestal builds them using the parts they have in stock and those parts go in everything they make. so its only the design and software thats diff the parts inside r all the same.

I have silicon Image chips in my Onyko. What is the equivalent to the TI DTS chip to heat?
@gman76utube
@gman76utube Жыл бұрын
As far as I know, silicon image had designed chips to process the hdmi signals. I have a denon and marantz receivers that use various versions. The denon receiver had an sil9185 chip that failed, shorted the supply. Just removed the chip and ordered another one from China. Fingers crossed. I don't think TI builds a direct replacement part for silicon image, at least not for receivers 8 yrs or older.

I also bought two with the exact same problems. Why didn't you use any flux? Also, are you going to mount some radiators over the DSP chip? LE.: also, 115F (46C) isn't really too hot for that CPU especially since it's a fine pitch IC and not a BGA.
@CatusMaximus
@CatusMaximus 3 жыл бұрын
I need the update this video it turns out much of this issue has to do with the solder joints internal to the processor package and not the BGA grid to the motherboard. I've already switched back to my old reliable Yamaha because my imputs already started becoming intermittent and I have to switch between inputs before sound will come out

A lot of these meltdowns show solder that has dulled in appearance which a drop or so of flux can help fix that problem.

Hi Great vid, thanks I've tried this now a couple of times and last attempt I reached 330F. couple of questions - Is this know to be a proper fix, even for a year or two? I ask, as mine is still not working when it cools - What sort of temperature can we expect the chip to fail at? I’m using a paint stripping thermal gun…lol
@CatusMaximus
@CatusMaximus 2 жыл бұрын
I found that I just got lucky ( Issues have come back I now have to switch inputs around to get the speakers to work) sometimes you have to heat it up much hotter hot enough to get the soldier to melt, also Flux should be used. Also I have since learned that some of these issues are due to the microscopic wires inside the chip itself failing.

@@CatusMaximus Hi and thanks for the reply. I’m thinking the processor has had it, and on top of that I may now have blown part of the amplifier circuit, as it requires high volume now to get a decent sound level. Had a look online and cannot locate replacement board for this, so I fear it’s time for a replacement unit. Quite shocked and disappointed at just how bad this thing has lasted, and the level of support for it. I don’t think I’ll be buying Onkyo again, even though it appears the TI chip is the culprit
