Im a black man (late twenties) who grew up with a mixed group of friends. Mostly Latino. I have had moments where I had to set a hard boundary with my friends about the word and eventually they all respected it. The way I see it, non blk ppl using the word feels undeserved/unnecessary/problematic because anti-blackness and rossism are so prevelant in the world. People will get comfortable and start calling you a dirty/broke 'n' and they are a whole different race/ethnicity. That's some cognitive dissonance I am not ready to experience personally. What does being cool about non black ppl saying it do for blk ppl and the fight against rossim? Do these people suddenly empathize, love, and better understand black culture? Do they start protesting for black injustices and learning about the damages of American slavery and how it affected black Americans for generations after (like redlining, black codes, voter suppression, share cropping, amendment 13, reconstruction era of the US post civil war) or do they simply dabble and keep it moving with just a new word to use to mix up their vocab. If letting people say the word healed the world, im all for it but ultimately its just a way to commodify and package us without actually having to understand/care for or consider us. So no I do not want non black ppl saying the word until we live in a post race society. Which may never come. The problem is that it's just a word to them and to us it represents our history. Trying to make us not care about our history just so you and your non black friends feel comfortable saying the word just because you heard it or like rap...is wildly insensitive. And until you understand that, or why it matters/why it should continue to matter to black ppl...you can't convince me you truly like or care about black ppl or whatever black ppl you have in your life if any.

Damn shame you are a 40 yr old black man ashamed to be black. I WILL never be ashamed to be from the black Americans culture. It's beautiful. flawed. Yet some how people still manage to like it. Maybe because no one culture is perfect. Because at the end of the day I don't try to group all of us and view us as some monolith. I know plenty of black people who want to be something different. Maybe you need to expand your black circles and stop surrounding yourself with non blacks if you feel so ashamed and feel the need to explain things to people.

Thank you for bringing up the Black American vs. Immigrant argument in this. When I was young (late 90s - early 2000s), so many Carib and African immigrants said that they didn't identify as "Black" because it was an American thing and that use the "nword" was not cool for them. This has been a point of contention since the 70s honestly - when Black immigrants started coming to the US. We just need to stop using it, because lines have been blurred and people who aren't even connected to Black American culture think they have some claim to it and sell it out to non-Black groups. It's sickening.

I am white but predominantly irish american(iykyk) and the words that could and have been used against me or my family dont offend me. A word gets popularized by the black community and normalized by pop culture in a country which was built on constitutional rights, the first one being freedom of speech. The whole situation is pretty ironic. My ancestors where conquered by england in ireland and they coined many derogatory words such as Mick or Paddy, and we don’t take offense, we also don’t use them as often. We also still feel the oppression to this day in Ireland. if there’s no intent behind the word who cares.

As a white Latino who listens to a lot of hip hop, the N word definitely pops up in my head a lot. When you've been exposed to a word so much and it's such a pervasive part of culture (not saying that's bad or good, it's just a fact) but at the same time you're not allowed to say it because of your skin color, it's a weird situation. I've sung rap songs at home and said the N word. I still feel kind of weird doing it, but would you say that makes me a racist? Of course I'm not stupid enough to say it in public, but still. It's not that simple. The way black culture is fetishized and sold to us, part of us almost wants to be black, because that's perceived as the coolest thing ever. So we wish we could say the N word, like Tarantino in Pulp Fiction. This is why the concept of the "N-word pass" is such a big thing. Of course, most of us have a decent enough grasp of reality to know that as much as we'd want to, we can't say it and that's the end of the story.

One of the major issues is that there is no genuine educational discourse surrounding the topic of race to begin with and the sociological and pseudoscientific concepts that tried to support it. Because no high schools (as that is the level of education most people have) teach about the history of race as a way to perpetuate ideals of inferiority, superiority, and chattel slavery, we have now begun to think that terms of real biological meanings and they don’t. And people want to internalize the pseudoscience and make into something cultural. The problem fundamentally is education. Also great video by the way!
