I remember that last year in my chemistry class, my teacher had an accent. I’m desi so I didn’t care, but all the “popular” kids in my class decided to make fun of her accent, talk during class, and just be overall terrible students. She’s so nice and she deserves everything, literally she cried 5 times during class last year. I don’t understand why she takes all these kids harassment and doesn’t report them when she heard them doing stuff like mocking her.

I had a substitute teacher in high school who was from India, he also had an accent. He was hired recently during that time. Most of the students, especially the popular ones, bullied him a lot. And I mean all sorts of different races, ethics groups, and nationalities bullied him. They said a lot of racist remarks, like, he was on the verge of tears. Some couple weeks afterwards, I heard from a teacher that he resigned, which explained why I didn’t see him anywhere in school. God, the fact that kids can bully adults for their identity, shows you how racist and fucked up our society still is. I hope he’s living a good life now, he should have never gone through that.

Haven’t watched the video yet. But, in my personal experience, this isn’t limited to online spaces. I’m not Indian-I’m black-but my best friend growing up and to this day is an Indian man. He was born in Calcutta, adopted as an infant, and raised in the United States. As kids, he used to try and distance himself from his Indian identity, something he’s only relatively recently grown out of as we’ve matured into men. When I asked him why he felt the need to conduct himself in that manner, his answers almost always came down to the way people treated him once they found out. Racism against Indians is, for some reason, extremely casual-and shockingly normalized. Just a few months ago, I’d befriended a Japanese exchange student at my university as we quickly bonded over our shared passion for watching and playing American football. One day after training together, we sat down on the turf and started discussing the differences between American and Japanese culture. Somehow, we came to the topic of India-and this dude (who I’d only known for a couple of weeks at that point), became offended at my referring to them as “Asians”. He started a rant about how Indian people were, in fact, not “real Asians” and laid out for me all the reasons why he thought they were inferior to him. I was sitting there genuinely dumbfounded at how a person of color could be THAT vitriolic and hold such a demented level of racist beliefs. I excused myself, said goodbye, and never hit that dude up again. In my head I thought, if he’s that fired up about Indians, I don’t want to hear what he really has to say about black people. Removed him from my life as quickly as he’d come into it. That was the most extreme example I’d ever seen of racism toward Indians, but not the only one. I try and verbally defend them and call out prejudice whenever an instance like that arises-but am always made out to look like I’m strange for it, as if Indian people aren’t worth defending.

It may be "officially" banned but its principles are firmly embedded into the modern Indian way of life and thinking. The Indian media exhibits this view on a regular basis, which is ironic given how the rest of the world sees Indians as a monolith, skin shade aside.

Yeah brother, I'm from India and its like its all different form "social class" to 'social class '. I was born and brought up in a very good society, where I was taught to be more clean, maintain my hygiene, good manners for others, good behaviour and obviously the knowledge for competing in this world. I tried my best to get the good things. JEE is an engineering exam which is considered to be the 2nd hardest exam in Asia as well as 3rd (maybe) in world. I ranked myself in 168th rank surpassing more than 2million competitors. I studied in IIT which is the best engineering college you can get in India. Then after completing my degree. I recently went to Vienna (Austria) in a vacation. They treated me like I was a tribal guy who knows nothing. I feel hurt. At the end of the day, I'm just a Human. I tried my best to be a good person and do all good things that could possibly be done by me. And because of Indias huge population even 20% of shite is like 160million people and their wrong doing becomes famous.. I get stereotyped as their category. What else can I do, I can't even say I'm born in the worst country. Atleast India is way better than several dictator and middle east war countries. I'm not in a war. I'm in a democracy. Even though India is not the best place to be born; while considering countries like USA, England and Japan, but still it's not the worse.

When I moved to Denmark, I've experienced none of that. Even when I did experience racism, it was nothing compared to the severe ostracizing and bullying I experienced in India. But I still think it is important to call out toxic cultural traits. People are able to criticise Christian Conservative Americans, but India has an incredibly conservative, deeply religious, xenophobic and nationalistic culture that may contribute to how misogynistic the men are, and ultimately appears as the butt end of many jokes. It's interesting how this video never once mentions Hindutva and its open and blatant admiration and inspiration from Italian Fascism, and how India's government and population areopenly supportive of them... I want to learn more about the Indian subcontinent and its related countries, but we have to be more nuanced at approaching why these jokes are directed towards this specific group of people. You want to unpack stereotypes and not just label everyone that points out misogyny as racist. I'm a minority myself, but I can call out black supremacist cults like the Nation of Islam despite how justified a response to racism it may at first appear to be.

White means Anglo-Saxon. Those groups are not white but are tolerated and the majority of them are on the bottom of the ws hierarchy. They rarely talk about the abuse of racism. But recently, Eastern Europeans and Southern Europeans are starting to talk about racism and the effects of white supremacy. It will be interesting to see if the Latin Europeans will ever join the discussion or if they are too deep in. I think once the Latin Europeans join in we all over the world will see a new context of racism and colorism: how it started in the Brits and how it spread.
@asinglebraincell6584 Жыл бұрын
@@Joyful_Smiles This would be so complicated. Like, there is so much to unpack and it would get LOOPY pretty quick, but just a little list of things that could be included: 1. The Spanish and Portuguese inventing racism to enslave converts to christianity 2. Italian authors inventing early forms of racial thinking or genetic determinism to discriminate other Italians [namely to put down the Sicilians] 3. The French and other nations implementing policies that suppress regional and minority languages to the point of near extinction [Occitan, etc] 4. The widespread acceptance of caricatures of Italian and other southern European people 5. The hypocrisy of distinguishing southern europeans from other europeans as the basis for discrimination while also absorbing their history to create a false narrative of a unified white european identity that white supremists later use to self mythologize 6. The way nationalism has shaped our understanding of these countries internationally is also super weird, like Neapolitan music and food for instance are stereotypically Italian around the world, but stereotypically Neapolitan within Italy, etc. It's a strange way to market culture and I guess gives us an insight into the commercialization and commodification of cultural expression in countries of relatively wealthy positions 7. In some nations you can literally see the creation of a national identity and read about people sort of cobbled together a more cohesive national identity out of loose, already existing ideas and reinforced it through the teaching of a standardized language. There's a lot more and it's all weird AF I haven't even mentioned like the Balkans, or how Rome has a massive history outside of Europe,

Thanks for talking about PewDiePie. I've never liked him, but I remember during the t series era if you even questioned whether the song was racist you would be attacked and spat on and cancelled for daring to question whether PewDiePie wasn't an amazing person. He got away with so much stuff and you weren't allowed to criticise him for anything. I remember being a kid and I have Asperger's syndrome, I tried watching some of his videos and in one he made a joke about autism. I get it's just a joke, but as a newly diagnosed child who was also being bullied for being "weird" and "different", it hurt, and I felt ashamed for being hurt because I knew that if I commented something I would be called sensitive or probably the r word. I don't think it's cancel culture to criticise someone; I'm not calling for PewDiePie and other creators to be cancelled, but I do think they should take accountability, and not making racist and ableist jokes that do affect people isn't "woke". It's called being a decent person, and I think if someone doesn't understand that then they shouldn't be hailed as a good creator and have the platform that they do.

I relate to so much of this as a dark-skinned black person. It’s like the darker you are, the more inherently dirty, violent, stupid, tribal, etc you are to people. It’s like they can’t see you in a present, neutral state. I relate soooo hard about seeing normal ass brown people on tv. The first time I saw a normal ass black woman who wasn’t, “too much,” a single mother, a criminal, a brown-nosing cop, a pimp’s hoę OR a domineering capitalist girl boss-I was blown away. She was a normal ass black girl with a normal ass life. Bonus points for giving us more personality traits than “ghetto.” It was amazing. I wish I could’ve seen it as a kid. Tbh I don’t really know how ghettos became synonymous with black people since I’m pretty sure it started off as a place where poor white people typically were. But I don’t think the word was even created with a specific race in mind so what’s up doc?🤨 Also, pew dew pie may or may not be a pos, I dunno the guy personally, but he’s definitely stoked flames time and time again. And I know for certain he knows what he’s doing. I’m sorry, but you don’t fumble the ball that many times over and over. Yet, for some reason it seems like an unpopular opinion to dislike him??? Why does he have such a squeaky clean reputation and why is he friends with people who, to my understanding, seem to be good people?? Why can white dudes skate on through, while stepping on every toe. Yet, dark people can just not bless someone when they sneeze and they have the full force of society on their backs. Like, anyone can be a pos, dark or light, but y’all can’t convince me it’s fair how we’re dealing out punishments. Someone is only “canceled” if you never hear from them again and they ain’t cashing anymore checks for the thing they were doing. So, a white guy being told “hey, cut that sh!t out” on Twitter, isn’t being canceled. Let’s be real. Also at 33:22 he’s getting at class consciousness vs false consciousness! It’s an important topic if anyone is interested in learning more.

One thing I've noticed as an Indian is that a lot of us have a lot of internalized and self-directed racism. Being told constantly that we're a developing country lagging behind the likes of USA and European countries, and being colonized by the British to boot, many Indians I've met idolize the west and even agree with the bad image Indians have because 'there's some truth to it'. We don't want to appear like snowflakes, so we shrug off the insults and roll with it. Videos like these really bring to light the fact that we need to step up and not confuse criticism with racism. India definitely has overcrowded cities, problems with poverty and pollution, and many cities and rivers are still too unsanitary. These are actual problems, and should be replied to while discussing which places in India are working on these issues and have seen improvement, along with which places need more work. However statements with no substance like 'Indians are dirty/smelly/backward' along with other generalizations like what Indian men are like / how Indian people look that obviously can't apply to every single person in this country of more than a billion people needs to be shut down. There's nothing productive that comes out of having a thick skin for racist insults. Speak up about it, my fellow Indians! We shouldn't be ashamed to be the subject of these insults, the people who are too shallow to know that Indians and our culture isn't a macrocosm should be the ones feeling ashamed.

The proximity to whiteness hierarchy is real no matter how many east asian youtubers/influencers tell you otherwise because the next breath they will celebrate aapi month by ONLY talking about east asia and MAYBE southeast asia. It sucks that even within this dialogue and with the rise and visibility of racism against east asians since covid, you would think we were more on the same page but racism toward SAs from EAs has gotten worse! Especially if you're darker skinned. Double for Arabs being racist af toward desis (yall know who you are and the way you and your families talk about us!). I have STORIES omg. It’s colourism, as well as featurism, for sure You got brown skin, hair ringlets, big nose & lips? Whoops, you’re not “Asian enough” somehow. Mind you, in the UK we don’t really encounter that sort of mindset as much (ime), since “Asian” here is synonymous with “South Asians”, although having said that, as American cultural influences become more prevalent, I’ve definitely seen *somewhat* of a shift towards East Asians being seen as the “stereotypical Asians”, so to speak

being south asian is not rlly trendy. as someone in school who is 50-50 nigerian and pakistan, ive realised that being considered black is deemed more “cool” than being asian and it rlly shows. for example, an egyptian boy in my class, who would frequently refer to me as ice spice when i wear my natural curly hair, told me once that he couldn’t even tell that i was mixed and that im lucky that i look black. while this boy who is 25-75 Nigerian to indian admitted to me that he wished he was more black. he would tell me that he hated no one could tell that he was part nigerian and would constantly talk about how much he loved fried chicken and watermelon to “seem black”. and my brother told me he identifies with being black because he doesn’t rlly identify with his asian side. when you’re mixed with black it seems like that’s all ppl see so you slowly start to identify with that side more and the reality that people have rlly bad misconceptions about “south Asians” doesn’t help..

@purplebanana9 Жыл бұрын
@@trash_bender420as a black person i have a lot to say about the thinking black people is cool thing. i think there is a level of acceptance coming in for black people (especially in youth) that is now not becoming necessarily acceptance, but unintentional micro aggressions. someone now (im 18 just graduated so kinda speaking on what i seen online and in school) will put on a blaccent to (in a sense) be cool. things like aave have had a huge rise in popularity online which at this point in society is the only thing influencing kids now. this has made it in a way, ‘cool’ to be black. the use of aave in itself though is a micro aggression. same thing with the increase of people in the USA wearing box braids. for centuries box braids were considered dirty and unkept, now other races almost fight for a reason to wear box braids. its an interesting time especially in youth. black isn’t necessarily bad to most youth, but their perception of black people can be racist in itself. not to say that blatant racism does not exist anymore, because i’ve experienced it, but it is so much less common to see in my age group i don’t even experience it in person. i almost always strictly experience racism online. if it is in person, its typically unintentional and internalized. either way, its racism. and i somewhat agree with the notion that being black is SOMEWHAT a “cool thing” nowadays. i sound old but lmaoo you get the gist
@DustyMusician Жыл бұрын
Yeah I wanna add on, I’m Nigerian and the commonality I’m seeing amongst your mixed Nigerian friends/relatives is that despite being Nigerian they’re performing Black Americanness, which can be read as performing a harmful stereotype bc they’re not Americans they’re Africans. Although not as destructive as when white people perform blackness, it is still not helpful for the advancement of black folk when Africans play into exaggerated caricatures either. And I think that’s a function of how antiblack racism has always wanted the culture of Black Americans without Black Americans themselves. So you’re touching on something when you say blackness is “cool,” but I would be mindful of the fact that colorism and fetishizing mixed ppl also plays into it. There may be a perception of you being an acceptable black person because you look like Ice Spice, who is very pale, or because you’re not a Black American. But there’s no guarantee a dark skinned Black American woman would receive the same treatment.

@Theonetrueerenyeager Жыл бұрын
@@doodooo2372 I don't mind replying lol, we face racism because of post 9/11 racial tension, we're often mistaken for muslims and/or arabs (which we're neither of, we're overwhelmingly zoroastrians, christians, and/or atheists). And like Indians, people also mock our culture and accents, but it's not as focused since people don't notice Iranians in general culture as much as Indians. And while I do more or less identify as white by default because of my skin color, Iranians are diverse in their appearance, just like Indians. No group is a monolith. I am indian and I will say one thing that indians are mentally colonized. We were humiliated for 1000 years before independance so its easy to develop internalized racism. Also, our education system was developed by macaulay and indian marxists and it was designed in such a way to glorify the invaders. I don't know of a single other race that does this except for maybe filipinos. I wouldn't say that my parents generation was "accepting of the status quo". Its just that they were so cucked, it destroyed their self esteem and self worth. So indians are okay with being second class citizens bcos they have no other choice. I have also seen this with ppl from certain african countries, especially in middle east, europe etc. Idk why ppl think asians in general are supportive of racism. Its more like we have no other choice and are too much of cucks to do anything about it.

Now I agree that there's a worrying level of racism toward Indians, but sometimes banter is just banter. There's not always racism behind it..
