I loved his creative playing. JT wasn't strictly an influence (my bass god was Phil Spalding from the Toyah! band) but I enjoyed playing John's lines because my hands had similar patterns. His lines were way better than mine though! 😀 Edit: If you wanted to showcase Phil Spalding "I want to be free" is an obvious candidate but "Elocution Lesson" is one of my favourites off the Anthem album - not so fancy but beautifully off the wall to suit the song. "Jungles of Jupiter" is another favourite of mine. I think I'm going to have to dig out that album now!

You’re not quite playing the same as the tab you’re showing. In the first few bars (and the same part in the rest of the song) you’re showing the final 3 quarter notes (G, G#, A) to be played on the G string but you’re playing them on the D string. No big deal, I would play it like you do also. But it might be confusing to some people.

I can’t explain that during a play along where I don’t talk. But, you’re right. I actually NEVER read the TAB. It’s very often not written the way an experienced player would play. It’s a huge subject this and too long for a KZbin comment! Long and short of it, experience and a bit of extra knowledge will teach where to play notes on the bass. Patterns too help.

Cool song, playing, and everything but what the heck is wrong with KZbin’s search feature. I searched Hofner bass and this is one of the first videos. Regardless, nice video. I’ve subscribed since you have a lot of videos I could use. I hope that doesn’t encourage KZbin to make things weirder.

The irony of the greatest pop song ever written being anything but pop. John Taylor is an incredible player, absolutely incredible, but he wrote this at age 21. Rio's bass line has more emotion, rhythm and pure sexual energy in it than any fresh faced 21 year old has a right to know. Just try and imagine what Duran Duran would sound like without John Taylor. Someone on KZbin (I think it was Paul DiBello) demonstated what Rio would've sounded like in a mix without the syncopation of Taylor's bass. It literally took away all that is special about them.

What I liked about the majority of the 80’s band, they didn’t play your average top 40 chug a long boring basslines, that is something that gave the 80’s its edge and to this day the majority of the bands today especially the J-pop and K-pop bands it’s completely absent, all the kids care about is how cool these so called talents look like, it’s not about the style, art, precision or execution of the musicians creative writing or arrangement talent, a lot of these cute bands have writers for them, it just takes the nostalgia and fun out of music, love this song, thanks for posting it, love this. I doubt we will ever see a decade like the 80’s ever in our lifetime again. Definitely it was great while it lasted.
