The closest I'll ever get to have a rolling mill is my pasta rolling machine. It was £16! ☹️ That mill looks so unbelievably robust and beautiful too! It will last many generations I'm sure! Thank you dear professor for demonstrating this so nicely. 🥀

I hear you Ekaterina! The trick to not buying a rolling mill is to keep wire sizes and profiles you like to use in your work on your bench. 😀

Easy to understand and informative video, thank you. As a silver hobbyist i bought a cheaper mill from Cooksongold. I have tried half round wire but i didn´t get it right. I got a " skirt " on both sides of the wire but now watching your video i got it. I started with to thick wire.

So I recently bought some tools and have started to try getting into jewelry making as a side quarentine hobby. Since I have had no formal training I decided to learn from videos. I started watching these videos because they were informative and helpful but appearently I was watching all the old 2015 videos because when you came out with that new haircut I was BLINDSIDED. I like the doo, but was wildly surprised. Great videos though keep them up!

Hi John , can you recommend or do you have a video about making wax prong settings for rings . I've done a few my self but I would see how you would perform that skill. Thanks
@OnlineJewelryAcademy
@OnlineJewelryAcademy 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Randall, The OJA doesn't have a video on making wax prong settings. One reason for this is because I don't like cast prong settings. Castings can be porous, can crack easily and reveal unsightly voids in the metal during the finishing process. Hence, I prefer to fabricate settings. If you search on KZbin I'm sure you'll find other channels that have a videos that can help. 😀

Is there a tool out there to put threads on earring posts for screw on backs?
@OnlineJewelryAcademy
@OnlineJewelryAcademy 4 жыл бұрын
Yes. What you need is a small tap and die set. Here's a link: amzn.to/2Y1nBVI. The small tap and die works the same way as a larger one. The OJA doesn't have a video on the use of this tool. But, I'm sure you can find a tap and die tutorial on another channel. 😀

why must you pickle brass brush rinse and dry the wire between annealing ? does this apply to all metals ?
@OnlineJewelryAcademy
@OnlineJewelryAcademy 3 жыл бұрын
Annealing instructions presented in any OJA video always pertain only to nonferrous metals. You must always pickle, brass brush, rinse and dry your metal after annealing it. These steps remove any flux, surface oxidation, grime and moisture from the metal surface. You don't want to ever transfer any of these to your tool surfaces. 😀

Oil the rollers with what??? Durston sent absolutely nothing with my C110 to tell me about care and maintenance.
@OnlineJewelryAcademy
@OnlineJewelryAcademy 4 жыл бұрын
Any light machine oil is appropriate. You don't want to use anything that would build up on the rollers. 😀

Quality tools always come at a price. The OJA encourages viewers to be comparative shoppers and make buying decisions based on their budget and work requirements. This tool isn't for everyone. But, for some, its performance can't be beat. 😀

$870 for the mini version of Durston. Still too pricey. I will continue using a hammer and draw plates.
