I picked up the same rod after i saw your first video. I agree the rod is fairly moderate and not very sensitive. Plus I thought it was kind of heavy for an ultralight rod at 3.5 oz. I have several other rods that are cheaper and are lighter - kuying teton and daiwa presso being two of them. I would choose the kuying teton over this one. Like you said, the Envy is a pretty rod . But I feel its a bit over priced. It would be a better deal at the $80 to $100 range. I almost returned it but i figured i wouldn't keep it and try it out for a season or two. Keep up the awesome videos. Love the reviews.

Lew’s puts the hook keeper down by the butt on some of their spinning rods too. I think the thought is that the line can’t get hung up on the hook keeper down there on casts or when working the lure. Perfect if you’re on a bass boat with rods laid out on the deck, but makes the rod very hard to use on a kayak or boat with rod holders unless you want to hook to the bale or the guides (I won’t hook to either). I’ve ended up putting the plastic Fuji hook keeper that uses an o-ring to secure the keeper to the rod on my Lew’s ML and M bass rods.
@FishAnything2 жыл бұрын
I have been thinking about buying some of those fuji keepers! Pros and cons to each style of keeper I suppose. But I don't like a rod that doesn't have one haha

Huge fan of the Defy Silver, surprised there is no hook keeper for this one. Looks like its a very aesthetic focused rod.

The lack of a hook-keeper caught me off guard, but other than that, this rod is real nice for the price. I bought the 7' light/fast for the creek and bank fishing and exclusively throw 1/16 lures and it's a lot of fun just pulling in 1 pounders. Endless perch and black bass in my area.

Another great video Ethan. Good to know to not buy this rod as my first choice. I’m hoping to get the Daiwa Procyon in the near future. Idk if you like eating bluegills but when you go to a lake that’s overpopulated like that, take a limit home and help the rest of the fish out and get bigger. Especially if it’s a small lake

Thanks PanfishFanatic! Yeah the Daiwa Procyon is definitely a cool rod. Very different than this particular rod. Probably should start keeping some - not sure it would make a huge difference with the sheer populations these places have lol

I wonder if the leaning towards moderate is a feature across 13. I noticed my Defy Silver was the same way, than I felt more bites, and better hooksets when I switched braid to leader, instead of straight Berkley sensation.
@FishAnything2 жыл бұрын
I will say that this rod does much better with braid than mono. I think longer ultralights in general get to be a bit more whippy. I assume you must have the 6'6 Defy?

Excellent review vid as usual, Sir. Question in the context of ultralight gear; What would you suggest as a setup for dedicated super light lures, e.g., 1/80, 1/64 stuff? Thanks in advance.
@FishAnything2 жыл бұрын
Thanks William! I would suggest a rod that isn't too whippy but has a soft enough tip to sling the jigs out there. I personally like the Temple Fork 6' model a lot. If you want to toss the really small stuff, I would HIGHLY recommend low diameter line. 2lb mono or high quality 6lb braid makes a major impact on distance.
@RondoOfChaos2 жыл бұрын
i have the medium 6'6" 13 fishing defy and the hook keeper is on the bottom of the rod holder, a place i also don't understand why place it there but i honestly tend to just stay away from rods like that, however at times if the rod is that good i will purchase it and yes i do often us this particular rod i just don't agree with the placement of the hooker is. it's annoying
@FishAnything2 жыл бұрын
Hook keepers are always funny to me. I don't like them right above the reel on the left because the line wraps them. I don't like them below because it makes it less convenient for storage. I think they should be on the back of the rod right above the reel seat. They should be a little loop so it doesn't tangle the line.

Honestly, I would probably go with a different rod after experimenting with others for similar price range. If you want a 7' UL for a similar price, I would go with the Temple Fork. It isn't as glamorous looking, but I think it is a higher quality blank and balances better.

Can you clear this up for me...fast action = slow taper? Or am I wrong? I think of it had a slow taper if would be more flexible further down the rod as the blank hits it's peak diameter later
@FishAnything2 жыл бұрын
Fast action means that pressure will create bend higher in the rod tip. So if you have a slow rod, it would bend all the way down the blank. A fast rod should only bend in the first 10-20% of the rod on simple pressure.

Good rod but just seems a little weak to me for the money. I wouldn’t dare run 6# or cast 3/32. I run 4# mono and have accidentally Hooked 3-5# bass on crappie jigs and that is everything this rods want. Mine has loaded so far into the reel seat handle that it actually broke the epoxy loose at the grommet. Incredibly sensitive and light rod but too weak for me. I give it an 8.5/10.

Honestly, I think 13 Fishing focused too much on making this rod look cool and didn't spend enough time thinking about quality. There are several rods I would choose before this one at the price point.
