Out here, the Rock Bass decline in the Susquehanna almost 30 years ago are now being seen as a possible indicator that the river was in trouble. 20/20 Hindsight, ya know. Good to see so many of them in that river, seems like it's in pretty good shape. I bet if you went shallow and flipped rocks, you'd find a ton of insect larva and other benthic invertebrates that indicative of water quality. More is better! Great Video!

@@FishAnything it's a Sakana SKR-8 5'6" 1 piece UL Fast tip 2-6lb line and 1/32-1/4 oz lures. I think its the Gander Outdoors brand. Paid like $60 for it and have fished with it for 2 seasons. Very pleased. Like I said, it's the rod I bring when I want to throw UL and catch panfish, trout and small smallies but there is a chance I might hook into a 3+ pounder.

In the quest/ obsession to have a ultra sensitive setup, I'm using a 6'7 Dobyns Sierra 2 piece ultra light trout and panfish, 10lb powerpro ssv2 (8 strands) and a size 1000 okuma Ceymar TG. Today I tied a yard of 4lb mono leader and fished with a 1/8oz panther Martin and I was super impressed with the sensitivity, when the panther Martin was in running water I could clearly feel the blades vibrating. However, after a few fish, I lost all sensitivity. What's going on? I checked to make sure the line wasn't wrapped around the tip and everything looked ok but still no sensitivity...

Well now that you've reviewed this high end rod you need to do comparison videos for the St. Croix Panfish Legend Elite, the G. Loomis equivalent, and the TFO equivalent for good measure. That is the video the people need.
@micahspilker9322
@micahspilker9322 3 жыл бұрын
I have a dobyns Sierra trout and panfish, a st croix legend elite and a loomis trout and panfish. The loomis has more of a parabolic bend than the other two and is well suited for treble hook baits, balances well and I really like the handle on it. The St Croix is pretty stiff, more so than the dobyns, is tip heavy and the split grip with the eva bottom seems cheap for the cost of the rod. Honestly for the price I am pretty disappointed with the legend. The dobyns is my favorite of the 3 and happens to be the least expensive. I’m not crazy about the placement of the hook keeper on the dobyns being between the two portions of the grip and wish they offered a full cork option. My dobyns is a 7’4” and would say it has more tip than ethans and can easily cast 1/64 oz jigs with plastic. I don’t have a temple fork UL but figured I’d give feedback on the other 3 since you were asking for a comparison.

@@micahspilker9322 this is pretty much exactly what I needed. Trying to move up to a higher end rod but it's hard when no store anywhere has actual rods you can physically test. Honestly that length would likely do fine with either a 1000 or 2000. They are typically pretty similar in weight so it’s more of a preference thing. I’d probably just slap a 1000 on it and call it good.

Nice fishing, Ethan! For me, when I see an Ultralight rod that's rate to handle 1/32 to 1/4oz; I get a little concerned. That seems like a big weight range for me. That's what my Cabela's Fish Eagle Ultralight rod is rate for. It's 6 foot with fast action. If it does handle the 1/4oz, then I'm skeptical if it can handle the 1/32oz decently. Any experience with ultralight rods that have that large of spread of lure weight? I guess, I'll find out when I start fishing it this season, lol!
@FishAnything
@FishAnything Жыл бұрын
Honestly, that is such a good point Leo. In my experience, however, I don't really look at the lure ratings much because I don't think the manufacturers are actually paying much attention to it. It seems like they just throw the same 1/32 - 1/4 or 3/16 on anything rated ultralight. The Okuma Celilo rates up to 3/8oz if I am not mistaking haha I think as ultralight fishing continues to grow, we will see the ratings get more accurate, but for now I wouldn't stress it too much. If you plan to fish larger baits, I would step it up to a light. If you plan to fish micro baits, I would get an ultralight.

I wanted to try ultra light fishing a year ago, before I found your videos. I bought a Shakespeare Durango 5'0 ultra light to see if I liked ultralight fishing. I started with a Diawa reel and eventually upgraded that to a Mitchell 308. I use 4lb mono. I have to admit I really like the $9 Shakespeare Durango rod. I do have a small issue with getting a good hook set on 2lb plus bass. As I use it more my hook setting has improved. The other issue is the rod is a 2 piece and the top half can come loose and fall off. I really like fishing with the set up and have caught a 7lb largemouth on the set up. What advantages would I experience by upgrading the rod?
@FishAnything
@FishAnything 3 жыл бұрын
Holy smokes if you landed a 7lb largie on that setup, I wouldn't change a thing haha Upgrading rod quality will potentially buy you a few things: 1) Increased components lead to increased sensitivity 2) Usually feature a higher quality reel seat that is more comfortable for a full day of fishing 3) Balance tends to increase which will help you cast and fish comfortably throughout the day Ultimately a lot of this is preference-based. Don't change if you like your setup. I would hold a few in a store and see if you think it would be a better setup for your personal style of fishing.

Hey Ethan! how does this rod hold up with baits like micro jerkbaits/crankbaits? Also, love your content! You got me into UL fishing and I've loved it loads. Mule Fishing is my go-to!
@FishAnything
@FishAnything Жыл бұрын
Thanks so much Daniël! This rod is definitely on the extra fast side so it takes some adjusting to get used to for treble hooked baits. But it totally handles them fine because of how the blank doubles down on a hookset. I think it’s a great jig rod and a good all purpose rod

Hey man great little vid 👌 im also an ultralight fisherman but mostly for wild browns over here in Scotland in small rivers but ive only been at it for a couple of years and i could really appreciate some advice i fish on a budget so no expensive set ups for me lol anyways i recently bought another 5ft 6 Abu Garcia devil spin rod UL and as inexpensive as it is i love it and have caught all my p.b's on it when i had one before, well the other day i treated myself to a Daiwa Legalis LT size 1000 reel, i fish with mepps and blue fox spinners and Salmo and Rapala hard lures anyways i need to know if i should get braid or if there is any other lines that are just as good regarding decent casting with smaller lighter lures and as my rod is only 5ft 6 i think id struggle to get a long enough leader to work with but im not sure and this is where i need the advice, on the box the reel came in and on the reel itself it says to use braid #6 0.6mm but no mention of what strength to use, i was wondering if i could maybe go up a tad and use braid a few mm more or i have to stick to what it says.Thanks in advance, take it easy and Tight lines ❤🎣✌💙👍 from Scotland🙋‍♂️

Since you are trout fishing, I would just go with a light monofilament. 2lb or 4lb will both work and can launch little baits very effectively. I like Trilene Sensation personally. Good luck man!

Rock bass, aka "redeye" have an awesome bite but don't fight especially well afterwards. Love the bite though, like a machine gun, lol.

E Dawg, many times I've pulled 15+ rock bass from a stump or root ball in the water. They'll pack up in very dense schools.

I have heard that nickname a lot! Kind of confuses me because there is an actual species of bass called a Redeye Bass. I will stick to the Rock Bass name :)

How does this compare to ghe tfo one? Worth the extra money?
@FishAnything
@FishAnything 3 жыл бұрын
They are definitely different rods. The TFO is a softer rod that will be more versatile but the Dobyns is a faster rod that will be better for jigging up big panfish. I personally prefer the Dobyns but I like the TFO as well :) If you want an all purpose UL, go with the TFO. If you want a really high quality UL with a fast action, go Dobyns.

The black tips on the rock bass fins could be a sign of them living in the vegitation. They develop strong white colored tips ( just like some trout ) when they are living in/on the rocks. As far as I understand, this is also a sign of a healthy diet in the fish as well!
@FishAnything
@FishAnything 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah I was also thinking they might be spawning and maybe it was a coloration thing during the spawn. Not sure, regardless they were awesome!

@@FishAnything Right on. I was looking to buy one. The handle and reel seat looks super comfy, bc i have all the plastic threads reel seats like the okuma or st croix. Just wish it was more moderate-fast action so the rod can bend and absorb more of trout's shakes.

@FishAnything

It is a fantastic rod! My favorite UL for sure :) I don't dislike anything about it but will say that it isn't the best UL for casting super light weights. Because it is so fast, it doesn't sling a tiny jig out there the way some of the softer rods do.
