Out here, the Rock Bass decline in the Susquehanna almost 30 years ago are now being seen as a possible indicator that the river was in trouble. 20/20 Hindsight, ya know. Good to see so many of them in that river, seems like it's in pretty good shape. I bet if you went shallow and flipped rocks, you'd find a ton of insect larva and other benthic invertebrates that indicative of water quality. More is better! Great Video!

In the quest/ obsession to have a ultra sensitive setup, I'm using a 6'7 Dobyns Sierra 2 piece ultra light trout and panfish, 10lb powerpro ssv2 (8 strands) and a size 1000 okuma Ceymar TG. Today I tied a yard of 4lb mono leader and fished with a 1/8oz panther Martin and I was super impressed with the sensitivity, when the panther Martin was in running water I could clearly feel the blades vibrating. However, after a few fish, I lost all sensitivity. What's going on? I checked to make sure the line wasn't wrapped around the tip and everything looked ok but still no sensitivity...

Well now that you've reviewed this high end rod you need to do comparison videos for the St. Croix Panfish Legend Elite, the G. Loomis equivalent, and the TFO equivalent for good measure. That is the video the people need.
@micahspilker93223 жыл бұрын
I have a dobyns Sierra trout and panfish, a st croix legend elite and a loomis trout and panfish. The loomis has more of a parabolic bend than the other two and is well suited for treble hook baits, balances well and I really like the handle on it. The St Croix is pretty stiff, more so than the dobyns, is tip heavy and the split grip with the eva bottom seems cheap for the cost of the rod. Honestly for the price I am pretty disappointed with the legend. The dobyns is my favorite of the 3 and happens to be the least expensive. I’m not crazy about the placement of the hook keeper on the dobyns being between the two portions of the grip and wish they offered a full cork option. My dobyns is a 7’4” and would say it has more tip than ethans and can easily cast 1/64 oz jigs with plastic. I don’t have a temple fork UL but figured I’d give feedback on the other 3 since you were asking for a comparison.
@davidnewton30643 жыл бұрын
@@micahspilker9322 this is pretty much exactly what I needed. Trying to move up to a higher end rod but it's hard when no store anywhere has actual rods you can physically test. @FishAnything7 ай бұрын
Honestly that length would likely do fine with either a 1000 or 2000. They are typically pretty similar in weight so it’s more of a preference thing. I’d probably just slap a 1000 on it and call it good.
@leomortimer2565 Жыл бұрын
Nice fishing, Ethan! For me, when I see an Ultralight rod that's rate to handle 1/32 to 1/4oz; I get a little concerned. That seems like a big weight range for me. That's what my Cabela's Fish Eagle Ultralight rod is rate for. It's 6 foot with fast action. If it does handle the 1/4oz, then I'm skeptical if it can handle the 1/32oz decently. Any experience with ultralight rods that have that large of spread of lure weight? I guess, I'll find out when I start fishing it this season, lol!
@FishAnything Жыл бұрын
Honestly, that is such a good point Leo. In my experience, however, I don't really look at the lure ratings much because I don't think the manufacturers are actually paying much attention to it. It seems like they just throw the same 1/32 - 1/4 or 3/16 on anything rated ultralight. The Okuma Celilo rates up to 3/8oz if I am not mistaking haha I think as ultralight fishing continues to grow, we will see the ratings get more accurate, but for now I wouldn't stress it too much. If you plan to fish larger baits, I would step it up to a light. If you plan to fish micro baits, I would get an ultralight.

I wanted to try ultra light fishing a year ago, before I found your videos. I bought a Shakespeare Durango 5'0 ultra light to see if I liked ultralight fishing. I started with a Diawa reel and eventually upgraded that to a Mitchell 308. I use 4lb mono. I have to admit I really like the $9 Shakespeare Durango rod. I do have a small issue with getting a good hook set on 2lb plus bass. As I use it more my hook setting has improved. The other issue is the rod is a 2 piece and the top half can come loose and fall off. I really like fishing with the set up and have caught a 7lb largemouth on the set up. What advantages would I experience by upgrading the rod?
@FishAnything3 жыл бұрын
Holy smokes if you landed a 7lb largie on that setup, I wouldn't change a thing haha Upgrading rod quality will potentially buy you a few things: 1) Increased components lead to increased sensitivity 2) Usually feature a higher quality reel seat that is more comfortable for a full day of fishing 3) Balance tends to increase which will help you cast and fish comfortably throughout the day Ultimately a lot of this is preference-based. Don't change if you like your setup. I would hold a few in a store and see if you think it would be a better setup for your personal style of fishing.

Wow!!! Thank you for answering my question. Everything you say makes sense. Right now the bass aren't slamming it. I have wondered about the sensitivity. The reel doesn't fit perfectly in the seat. I haven't had casting issues, but the other 2 issues are relevant to my situation. Thanks!!!

The black tips on the rock bass fins could be a sign of them living in the vegitation. They develop strong white colored tips ( just like some trout ) when they are living in/on the rocks. As far as I understand, this is also a sign of a healthy diet in the fish as well!
@FishAnything3 жыл бұрын
Yeah I was also thinking they might be spawning and maybe it was a coloration thing during the spawn. Not sure, regardless they were awesome!

Reel seat with that portuguese cork looks more comfortable than other UL rods from st croix and okuma
@FishAnything3 жыл бұрын
Honestly this is my favorite ultralight rod yet and I have tried several.
@mattnguyen16723 жыл бұрын
@@FishAnything Right on. I was looking to buy one. The handle and reel seat looks super comfy, bc i have all the plastic threads reel seats like the okuma or st croix. Just wish it was more moderate-fast action so the rod can bend and absorb more of trout's shakes.

I have the same thing happen on my local river, the smallmouth will swim next to me because the baitfish bite at my legs. The bass will hit them off my legs.

Lmao that has to be wild! I cracked up when those little fellas were smashing the jig right by me :)

Do you voiceover your videos in Post Production?
@FishAnything3 жыл бұрын
No haha that sounds like way too much work. Plus there is no way I could be as excited as I am in post-production. I just use my GoPro audio.
@ldsudduthhanover3 жыл бұрын
@@FishAnything Wow, the audio quality sounds like post production. That's pretty awesome..

Was on your live stream last night on IG. Was talking about Rock bass on there. That place was loaded with them. Those spawning colors look awesome.

Yeah the black lines on their fins were super neat! And thanks for hanging out on IG Live that was a blast!

Still using this rod a lot? Has there been anything that you don’t like about it?
@FishAnything3 жыл бұрын
It is a fantastic rod! My favorite UL for sure :) I don't dislike anything about it but will say that it isn't the best UL for casting super light weights. Because it is so fast, it doesn't sling a tiny jig out there the way some of the softer rods do.

You might not see this comment, but what is the heaviest fish that you believe this rod can catch?

I’ve caught plenty of large fish on it. It’s all about drag settings and playing the fish properly.

You just learned something without knowing it. You are fishing with a trout rod that was designed by bass fisherman and you are fishing with it like a bass fisherman.
