Five Ultralight Techniques You Need To Fish This Year!

Ultralight fishing is about as fun as it gets! Lighter gear & smaller lures generally results in more species and more of a fight. Throughout the past few years, I have experimented with several ultra light fishing techniques. Today, I wanted to share my top five ultralight techniques for all year long. If you master these five lures/rigs, I honestly think you will very rarely skunk when you go fishing.
5 - Float Rig
This technique is versatile depending on how you rig it. Personally, I love a slip float or a peg float. The slip float gives me the ability to fish any depth (especially great for suspended fish over deep water). The peg float is quick and easy for shallow creeks and streams so I love it for trout and other current-dwelling fish. See how to rig both here: • How To Rig The Mule Pe...
4 - Micro Jerkbait
As a bass angler, I always love tossing around a jerkbait. Well, you can downsize this popular bass approach and use it on UL gear too! These are excellent for numerous species but I especially like them in windy conditions or during the fall when fish are chasing baitfish around.
One Of My Favorite Jerkbaits: • All Anglers Should Own...
3 - Micro Drop Shot
This is another one of my favorite fishing approaches for bass, but it is equally as beneficial for ultralight anglers targeting panfish. I personally love it for deep water but it can be fished in pretty much any conditions. I like a 1/8oz drop shot weight and a small drop shot hook (number 8) with little plastics in the 1-3" range depending on what I am targeting.
2 - Double Jig Rig
This rig is almost always tied on one of my setups now. The more I fish it, the more I love it. It seems to be best for Crappie or Perch, but I have caught just about everything on this setup. The beauty is that it allows anglers to mimic a school of baitfish but still throw super small gear.
Check Out This Video Using This Rig: • We Found Some BIG YELL...
1 - Jig & Plastic
90% of my fish throughout the year come on some form of an ultralight jig and plastic. Simple yet effective! The beauty of a jig and plastic is that you can virtually fish it anywhere and it can be presented in numerous depths and retrieve it in different ways. Small plastics, anywhere from 1-3" long, in various shapes/colors is what I would recommend. I like minnow and insect profiles because they are the primary forage of most fish. That said, small crawfish and worm profiles are always good to have around too!

As a bank fisherman I always start off with a small jig 1/64 or 1/32 oz under a float with either a gulp minnow or donkey tail jr. That usually always prevents the skunk then spend the rest of my time using and experimenting with other techniques. Thank you Ethan for your videos you are the one that has gotten me addicted to ultra light fishing!!!!

I have caught several bluegills over 9 inches on the DT Jr., so I can recommend it as a bait to target big 'gills.

What size gulp minnow ?
@atoadigi
@atoadigi Жыл бұрын
@@travisnorton7194 I use the 2-1/2" gulp minnow and if needed I'll cut a 1/2" or 3/4" off if they keep striking the tail and are not eating the hook. I like using the 2-1/2" instead of the 1" because it will usually prevent the really small ones from hitting it and bass will hit the 2-1/2" size. The 1" will catch a ton of fish but you'll get a lot of dinky ones. 1" is good to use for kids so they keep catching something

I hate gulp baits they are so nasty, the whole point I use a jig is so I don't have to touch nasty nightcrawlers 🤢. You should try the Bobby Garland jigs, I love the Black licorice color, monkey milk, Blue Thunder, Twilight and so on.

I love these videos because I felt guilty and stupid for using them on the water’s edge. Most fishermen here use a single jig or a dropshot while I try to find what makes a better selection so I’ve combined a jig as a weight for my dropshot and a foot or so higher a single hook for a soft bait( creature or a small ribbed gummy worm). Sometimes I just decide to use the jig leaving the small hook free as I’ve thought it’s invisible. My surprise was that there were times I’ve got more fish on the free hook than on the jig itself. The fish have an insane visual perception under the water.

That Rebel “Crickhopper” is crazy good. It is the best fishing, ugly, hard bait out there. If the float rig gets you fly fishing I am all for it 😂 “Spring is Coming”

On a Canadian fishing trip last year I used a 6 ft medium light rod with 4 lb test mono, a 3/16 oz jig with 2 in gulp minnow and out fished all 3 of my buddies for both smallmouth and walleyes. largest walleye was 28 in.! They all wanted my “magic minnows”.

The double jig makes so much sense and I have flirted with doing it but have felt it's a "naughty' technique. Also you can increase your casting distance but still get the benefit of a lighter presentation.

If you fish with a flurocarbon trace leader, these have a clip and spinning connection which makes changeover really easy, means you don't need to always re-tie if you are tight on time. I rarely tie the lures to the line anymore. No drop in catch rate either !

I usually remove the split-ring and replace it with a Berkley Cros-Lok snap. With light line there's always a chance of getting your line nicked on the sharp ends of the split-ring and breaking a fish off.

All of my favorites for ultralight fishing spare 1, the tiny inline spinners. Another great video Ethan. I love using a variation of the drop shot and some old crappie double rigs. Although for live bait it gave me the double jig idea before I saw it years ago. I try to start my newbie with slip floats, ice jigs and wax worms to get familiar with it. And buddy if I've got 1 then it's probably 50 varied ultralight crankbaits..Rebel, Rapala, Yozuri, Matzuo, tiny lipless rattling baits. You hit a home run with me on this one. What a blast!!!

Thank you for the great tips, Ethan. The micro drop shot has been very good for me; I also use 1/8 weight. Was surprised the micro Ned rig was not more prominently mentioned in this video; that's another one I have been playing with. I grew up fishing double (sometimes triple) jigs on the saltwater grass flats; fun days indeed. Just wait till a largemouth and a pike each grab one of those jigs. Game on. Hoping that you and yours have a happy, safe and prosperous 2022.

Great video! 1/32 mule jig with DT jrs have caught me a lot of creek and lake fish this last season. Good advise with the rapala floating above weeds. I tried that once last season with good results.

My go to bfs UL technique is a size 4 or 2 EWG hook and soft plastic in the 3-4” range. Plastic could be a finesse or drop shot worm, a TRD or a micro creature bait. Weight of the hook and soft plastic creates a very slow/natural fall to the bottom and usually get inhaled on the initial fall. Produces in heavily pressured fisheries. Great vid Ethan!!

My favorite by far are micro crank baits! It amazes me how small a fish will take it. Also in my opinion more fun than throwing a cast net for live bait for nighttime cat fishing at the camp site. Great video, looking forward to trying the vertical technique... Eat, sleep, fish!

I hope you all had a wonderful Christmas and New happy Year's as well. When I do my trout fishing I always use ultralight gear, I think it's the best way ever. During the fall and cooler water and temperatures, I like to use the most lightest jigs that I can find. Like a 1/32 oz vmc crayfish pro series, 1/64 oz trout magnet or I'll use a Berkley powerbait 3 inch orange peel floating worm, using a 1/64 oz trout magnet jig head. It does work wonders. I'm so glad you did a video I was wondering if you were going to do one sometime soon. Great information, great video and I enjoyed watching too. 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍

I really like your jig heads. I use them for most everything. Try tossing the treble hooks on your Rapala's and replace them with inline single hooks, especially with trout. One last, the wal-mart soft six pack cooler fits your packaging like they were made for your products.

Thank you so much Michael! And I have been meaning to try those little inline single hooks so I will try that. Lastly, I will have to look out for that cooler because that sounds like a good idea.

You should come out with your own line of ultralight spinning and casting rods, and maybe even reels. Love your videos. Also curious as what the all-black Daiwa reel you're using is. Looks like a Tatula 2000 size. I looked that up on Amazon and it's $172, but I found a much better deal in their BG 1500 sized reel for $110 and it comes with an all aluminum body, is mag-sealed, and also rated for saltwater. I bought one and paired it up with a 6'6" Okuma Celilo ultralight rod and it balances perfectly. I am imagining me taking this to the pier to fish for Scup (aka porgies) up here in NY, and then turn around and use it for bluegills and LMB.

As a dreamer, I would definitely love my own line of ultralight setups someday. A lot of work to do before I can make that a reality but we will keep working! And yeah, that is a Tatula LT 1000. I also have a 2000.

Very good techniques! Thanks for this video. So, basically, I can also use the surgeon's knot for the micro drop shot as well, right? (the knot you use on the double jig rig). It will keep the lure a little bit off the mainline.

My favourite finesse jerkbait by far is the OSP Asura Durga. Comes with a magnetic weight transfer so at 4grams it flies like a bullet. Swims beautifully with a nice slalom whether you retrieve it fast or slow. You can jerk it aggressively, but whatI like to do is retrieve it extremely slowly, with a few quick jerks every 5 seconds. Any fish that sees it will follow and that sudden jerk makes it attack instinctively.

The Old Town Sportsman PDL 120 is a solid rig. To be honest, I chose it because I got it for free. But it is a dynamite rig for serious fishing trips. At this point, I would like to potentially exchange it for something about 30 lbs lighter but still featuring pedals. Not many options out there, but I would be willing to sacrifice stability/storage for speed and convenience of transport.
