Most all SG processes are very poorly understood and deployed. A Gate decision is a one page decision. The idea that a gate defines the next steps is faulty, this is understood well before hand. Yes, the outcome decision at the gate will affect the rest of the program but this is basically a binary go/no-go. IF your deployment of S-G does not fully flesh out all program options then you are doing it wrong.

Yes, indeed. I was brought-up (project management-wise). Stage Gates are breaks in a completely specified programme. But we aren' in Kansas anymore. We are in a world of adaptability, where rapid changes in technology, society, and economy mean that sticking rigidly to a programme is at least as risky as not having a fully thought-out one. So, at tintervals, we need to be prepared to review our plans and budgets. Stage Gates offer a good (but not the only) opportunity to do this.
