This reminds me of another feature nobody knows the Wii had, that only like, 2 games used: Games could pull information from the Weather Channel to change the weather in your game based on how it is in real life. NiGHTS Journey of Dreams had a Chao Garden-esque area called My Dream that would use this. Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games and a Fifa game did too. Such an immersive, subtle feature and yet it barely got used.

I like it when companies understand how important music is in a videogame. The Dreamcast had this feature where if you were to start the console with no game in it, go to the main hub of the console, place an official Dreamcast disc for a game inside & attempt to boot it as a music CD, some copies would let you listen to the game's soundtrack instead of just a small warning that the disc is only for Dreamcast devices.

I get that Jon wanted to cover only Nintendo approved ways of using files on the SD card but part of me wishes he had covered how you can use it unofficially in Brawl. Thanks to an exploit Brawl can be tricked into loading a modded version of the game therefore turning the worst Smash into the best. Project+ (or Project M as it was once known) gave Smash fans the true Melee sequel they had wanted all along, it became the biggest unofficial Smash game and it continues to overshadow official old Smash games Brawl and its sequel. Doesn’t even mod your Wii or anything permanently if you use the hackless version. And you can customize the music on it too if you don’t like what it came with.

SD was a very different medium when the Wii was in development. It was initially part of the Secure Digital Music Initiative by the record industry (SDMI), hence the name "SD". They were marketed on that little lock on the side of the card, which write-protects it. The thought behind it was that, by doing this, music could be distributed in a write-protected codec (like AAC) that was also on a write-protected medium. It didn't take off for music distribution bc nobody likes DRM, however its small size and write-protect made it super appealing for hardware applications in other tech: especially cameras, PCs and game consoles. MicroSD was a seperate thing called TransFlash (sometimes you'll see SD cards listed as TF cards on places like Amazon: this is why) but they can both be formatted just like a conventional hard drive and can be easily adapted to be electrically compatible, and ended up being included in the SD standard ultimately because of these facts Nintendo likely picked it up because of its heavy early marketing surrounding its anti-piracy measures. The switch to AAC codec was likely due to fear about bad PR surrounding the Wii being used as a piracy device. Ever like Nintendo to be paranoid about brand enforcement, lmao Also the reason you couldn't get more modern cards to work with the Wii for music playback. It expects all of that SDMI anti-piracy stuff that's in original SD cards, rather than the more modern SDHC and SDXC extensions which streamlined that away for faster transfer speeds and more writes before it blows up. The original SD was so locked down that the cards have to be perfect, and more modern SDs are so different that it isn't forwards compatible, only backwards compatible (i.e SDXC reader supports SDHC and SD original, but not the other way around) and this is largely down to software and firmware as all the same electrical connections are there

Ok so Excite Truck was already on my radar of Wii games I missed out on and should try out, but this REALLY definitely sold me on the game! I had no idea any Wii game at all supported in-game usage and/or listening to your own music, always thought the SD Card officially was just kinda used for photo stuff! On 360 and PS3 I also liked having my own music to listen to and use in games, and it was easier to store the songs on the consoles thanks to HDD, but the catch was the music by default was playing via a seperate app, which made it pretty janky. Like even when you finished a race in a racing game or were done with your drive to a location in GTA and a cutscene started playing, your own music would still play over all of it. Actual in-game support like the custom radio stations in the GTA PC Versions was rare to non-existent on HD Consoles, at least in the games that I played on them. So all I'm saying is, props to f'n Excite Truck on the f'n Wii in f'n 2007 to actually properly support this in-game.

I think because back then it was an uncommon feature then, and even now, to replace a soundtrack with your own, they didn't want people to put in songs with explicit lyrics, or other questionable audio, and then have someone else play the game, and get a different impression of what a game is. You could mess with people too, by putting in a normal tune, but then adding something freaky like a suddenly loud scream at a random point in it.

Excite Truck might be one of the very few games by Nintendo that uses the European comma when it comes to time display. What I mean is that a game like Mario Kart incorrectly uses a decimal period even in German, while this game does use a decimal comma. Now it would make more sense to use a decimal period for English. But you could still technically use a decimal comma in English too. But games not using a decimal comma in German is wrong.

I had Endless Ocean, and loved it so much. Had no idea this was a feature though, that’s so cool

Reminds me a lot of og Xbox games supporting the ability to playback CDs dumped on the console's hard drive. Being able to play RalliSports Challenge with eurobeat music in the background makes the game just more hysterical lol.

This is just a love letter to Excite Truck and I am HERE for it. That was a game that really had it all: boosts, crashes, stage transformations, tricks, custom music and more!

Excite truck is an amazing game that’s still super playable

The OG Xbox had a similar feature where you can rip CD's (even burned ones) to the hard drive and get custom music that way. Launch titles in 2001 like Tony Hawk 2X supported it.

Excite Truck with Rhythm Thief music is so exactly up my alley you cannot even believe

It’s hilarious and actually fits that you used the Daytona “Let’s go Away” song!

Leave it to Jon to include the vocal version of the Puyo theme. We love to see it ❤

I remember this being a big feature prior to launch - an exciting one for me, at least, even though I never bought excite truck! It’s easy to forget sometimes how futuristic the Wii felt at the time. There are a lot of features we take for granted now but it what it lacked in graphical power, it more than made up for with sheer innovation.

That 'Excite Truck' still looks and plays rather good to this day. It should be ported to the Switch.

This video was just an excuse for you to gush about Excite Truck for ten minutes and I admire that. Also, I'm pretty sure I have Pavlovian conditioned myself to cry whenever I hear Where We Belong...

The best implementation of custom soundtracks was the way the OG Xbox handled them. A feature that most likely we will bever see again. Suripised, i never knew it was in Excite Trucks!

Plays Endless Ocean. Doesn't pay attention and puts on random track. Goes in water. Shark appears. Sephiroth Theme starts playing.
