I am sure you are aware that you can also trigger those with a diac optocoupler like MOC3021. Then you can go to about 400Vrms AC and control, for example a fan. Combined with a gas leak detector, it may be a good safety device. I love you channel.

It's a good circuit for learning how triacs work, but it's not simple when it comes to turning a light on and off. An ordinary switch is easier, cheaper, and much simpler.

Yes, but boring! And with a triac you can control it with an Arduino or remotely with an ESP32

Neat! I'm thinking those on/off switches could be replaced with a switching circuit for auto-control. Also, given the triac works with AC, I should be able to switch on/off an AC motor - yes? and maybe stick in a pot to vary the voltage and hence speed of the motor?? PS - great videos, and really appreciate your focus on cost!!
