I like to think of しか as "anything but," which helps me remember to use the negative. "I don't speak anything but Japanese."

That's the same I do in German. My teacher despaired by trying to explain why I have to negate it 😅

Misa-san, thank you so much for these N4/5 lessons. I'm learning Japanese at a language school in Tokyo, and it feels like the teachers just run through the grammar points without providing any proper explanations. I get lost a lot from what they teach as their only concern is to get us to take tests (JLPT or J-Test). But these videos make things much clearer for me. ありがとうございました!

Same situation for me. The teachers at my school here in Tokyo are great but the classes are so packed with information I almost forget half of what has been taught. These videos are great for review of something we went over in class.

The particle "de" can mean "so" as well ? In the example Misa gave, she said "senkou wa ei-bungaku de, takusan hon yonda kedo..." and the translation is "I majored in english literature so I´ve read many books but..." minute 13.40. This DE can mean so ? I would say kara or node instead of just DE... can someone explain to me?

Not 100% sure, but I believe it's the te form (conjugated to で for a noun) to connect two clauses, which kind of has the meaning of "so" in this example.

That was an amazing video! If anyone is still hung up on だけ vs しか for negation, I've heard another KZbinr explain しか as 'more than.' and だけ as 'only/just.' So, 私しか手を挙げなかった。 More than me didn't raise hands. => Only I raised my hand 私だけ手を挙げなかった。 Only I didn't raise (my) hand(s) I think it helps to think of it this way to explain why しか is always paired with a negative verb to mean 'only'. In English: I went to 7-11 and there was NOT more than onigiri => I went to 7-11 and there was only onigiri In Japanese: セブンイレブンに行ったけど、おにぎりしかなかった。 vs I went to 7-11 and there only wasn't onigiri => they have everything but onigiri セブンイレブンに行ったけ、どおにぎりだけなかった。 Hopefully this helps someone!

I guess you can also think of しか~ない as Except ~dont. Like taking the towel example, タオルしか持ってこないで下さい。 Except Towel, dont bring anything(else). Thinking of しか in this way also makes it easier to remember the negative nuance it implies since in English the above sentence does convey the commanding sense that 先生 mentioned. This also works with the double negative case of しか which somehow gives off the nuance that the speaker thinks its something "positive". Like in the example: 部長しか嫌いじゃない. Except my manager, I hate nobody(else). And 絵しか下手じゃない. Except drawing, she is not bad at anything(else). (And thats impressive!) Also at 18:00 I feel like a more apt translation would be "I speak Spanish only with my Family." Since the focus is that you speak spanish only with your family members, no one else while the other translation " I speak only spanish with my family" puts more emphasis on the fact that with my family members I speak only spanish, no other language.

Romance languages have a similar construction to しか. For example, the park example might go "Non possono entrare senza pagare che bambini" (Italian) or "Ne peuvent entrer sans payer que les enfants" (French, but feels really unnatural partly because the French usually don't reverse subject and verb outside questions). The strictest translation of the "non...che / ne...que" construction in English is an affirmative followed by "but" (ex: "life is but a dream," a line from "Row, row, row your boat") and uncommonly used today, especially in spoken English. The most common exception is probably "all but" (ex: "all but one," "he has all but given up").
